At the Wal Mart Salon!

I went to the salon in Wal Mart today looking for some products I don't know the girls in there must have smelled me coming or something, but I get there and DAMN, they BUM RUSH ME.

Girl #1: HI!!! CAN WE HELP YOU????

Me: No not really just looking really thanks

Girl #1: What are you looking for?? Maybe we can help!

Me: (ok Ill bite) Im looking for an ultra moisturizing conditioner and a shampoo that does not contain sodium laureth sulfate. Im also looking for a conditioner that doesn't have any silicones in it.

Girl #2: Oh we have that!! !! (goes to the shelf and grabs some cheap looking conditioner that happens to have the words olive oil on it) HERE!

Me: (flips the package over to read the ingredients) Oh sorry no, this has dimethicone in it... (points) See? Right here? Im sorry this isnt what Im looking for . Im looking for something thats not going to coat my hair and eventually dry it out more... I already have dry hair.

Girl #2: Oh ok. (reaches up and starts playing in my hair) Its so pretty! How much of it is yours???

Me: (stares at her for like a full min.) ALL OF IT.

Girl #1: (reaches up and starts doing the "weave check". Looks surprised to find out it isnt one) Oh well, do you relax your hair???

Me: Not anymore, but I do still have relaxed ends, I basically flat iron my roots to get it to look straight like this.

Girl #1: Well we could give you a relaxer....

Girl #2: We've done it before. I even had mine done because I had really wavy hair you know... blah blah blah (to me it just sounded like the "wah wah wah" charlie brown people talk after that)

Me: No, I dont relax anymore.

Girl#2: Oh and honey You need your ends trimmed! I could trim them for you if you want! And honey I wouldn't cut too much off because I know its hard for you to keep your hair long! I could even just layer you up a bit and....WAH WAH WAH WAAAAH....

Me: Oh really? Nah. Ill pass on that. Id rather just trim it myself.

Girl#2: Let me give you my card! (pushes her card in my face) Here you go, You call me anytime (rattles off her schedule, but it still sounded like WAH WAH WAHHH WAAAH WAH WAH)

I high tail it out of there......For real. They were just WAYYYY to excited to have a black girl in there. I dont know what they would do to me if I was in the chair! I loathe to think. (shudders)

The hair touching doesn't bother me. Hell the weave check didn't even bother me. But the rest annoyed the heck out of me.

Nah, I don't have a problem with the touching per say. I mean I did walk into a salon. If it was just some random person on the street... then yeah... but I mean they are stylists.... Thats all they do all day.

Well I can see why they were weave checking, your bantu knot-out is gorgeous!! However, I'd stick to this board if I need product advice because even the most highly 'trained' professional doesn't know half of the things we do!

Eh, the touching part really didn't bother me too much, I mean Id rather have people touch my hair and find out its NOT a weave and make themselves feel foolish, than NOT touch my head and go around thinking (and telling folks) I'm lying.

While I was inquiring about a product from a beautician I asked if it contained silicones... she said "no", but after reading the ingredients they did,and I pointed that out to her.

The part where she said she knows you have a hard time keeping it long would have been the breaking point for me. :hardslap: I have this cold stare and soft, spooky do-you-know-I-will-kill-and-scalp-you voice that stops everyone dead in their tracks. And checking your hair? No one who looks at my face first ever touches my hair without permission and I don't give anyone except my SO (when I had one), sisters and mother permission to touch my hair. When people just reach and touch my hair, I might excuse it if it's a sista but anyone else is getting checked, and will barely escape alive.

Yeah, I dont know, I just kinda giggle at the ignorance. Its not really all that upsetting, its just mildly annoying. She was probably just quoting Oprah. And you KNOW they dont teach them ANYTHING about our hair in hair school. I once looked through a friend of mines hair school book for tips on styling our hair... and girl... we had ONE PARAGRAPH, and a badly drawn diagram. THATS IT. The paragraph basically just said Dont cut Black hair when wet, and its very curly, also your client may have a relaxer. And that was ALL.

So I dont blame them. I just wont let them do my hair thats all.

So what if she had "nice hair" when she was younger... it obviously isnt doing her any good now, because her hair is jacked up right now.

Actually, they barely teach stylist about ingreidents in school. They teach them just enough to pass the state board. They barely touch upon extremely curly, wavy or combination(wavy and curly) hair in school. The state board feels that they (stylist) will learn what is necessary once they graduate and start working in the salon. Schools are required to teach the very basics. Now don't get me wrong, some schools will teach how to care for hair, but it is not this extreme. So don't completely blame the stylist because alot of them don't know or are only going by what they have learned either on their own or from other stylist that they have worked with and you know how some bad habits are hard to break or the saying you can't teach an old dog new tricks, that goes for some stylist.

I hate to say this, that many of our african american stylist don't try to learn new methods for caring for hair because they have been doing it their way for so long and they have seen growth, whether slow or moderate, so they think their way works, not realizing that it may be more damaging than helping. JMO!

There is a popular myth that African American hair will not grow. That's why it’s prevalent to see beauty supply stores in African American neighborhoods saturated with floor to ceiling, wall to wall hair weaves, extensions, wigs, etc., especially in beauty supply stores owned by Asians. The majority of their customers are African Americans, so what else are they suppose to believe? We as a whole were never taught how to take care of our hair.

My stylist said: “Our hair is too fragile, and it is the weakest of all nationalities. African American women as a whole don’t know how to take care of their hair. They think they do, but they don’t.” Incidentally, his customers have the longest hair than any of the other customers in the salon.

The Asians that I work with and the ones in my beauty salon know that some of us don't need to add hair to our head to make it long. They are astonished to see our hair gradually grow to bra clasp or waist length. I have even had my hair washed and detangled by my Vietnamese manicurist several times when my stylist gets backed up. So some of them know, but even Whites say the same thing: “African American hair just don’t grow.” This is what they were taught, and this is what some African Americans have told them.

Exactly! And you know what's funny, I saw my mom today and she said "your hair is getting long. It looks longer than it was even when I saw you last".

Honestly, it is not all that longer - I just wore my hair totally straight on purpose to show my length. I normally have it curled tightly so no one can really see it. But I just had to do it this time.

My dream would be for so many other black women to get over the hair myths and crazy beliefs. I think it is even worse that stylist were saying that to you. Well, I guess if all the see are ladies with bad hair and never questioning the product ingredients that were surprised by you!
