I have seen Coconut Oil at Wal-Mart in the grocery section where the cooking oils are for like $7 for a big container. Do you think this coconut oil could be used for the hair?

I have used the Wal-Mart coconut oil and it works well for me. It makes my hair softer than any of the other oils.
I just purchased some organic extra virgin coconut oil and so far I like it a little better but I think that my hair just luvs coconut oil:grin:

The mell reminds me of my childhood when my grandmother would do my hair with coconut oil. I had very long hair then( Light bulb just turned on) Maybe thats why it was so long.........:woot:

What DON'T I love about coconut oil ? It's a truly amazing oil that's good for many things. I use it for both my hair and eating with. It makes your skin so supple and radiant when you take it internally. It's also good at promoting a healthy immune system and maintaining a healthy weight. And when I use it on my hair it makes it feel really soft, and I love the smell! And it's surprisingly light and absorbs well into the hair. It's by far my favorite oil to use, period.

I use it on my hair and it makes it very shiny. I hope it helps my dandruff tho'.:smirk:

Wow!

I have some 100% pure Coconut Oil from Whole Foods. I am going to start using this to see how my hair benefits from it.

How often do you all use it? Daily?

Right now, every other day or sometimes every third day. It depends on how lazy I am feeling. It is really good. I am about to get my mom using it too.

You know I slept on coconut oil for far too long. I used to use it all the time when I was a nappy-head trying to maintain my coils and make my curls pop. I would saturate my hair in it at night, mixed in with a little avocado butter. In the morning, my hair would be tangle free, soft like butter and the curls would be looking at me as if to say, "yes, we rock!" :clapping:

How and why I stopped using it I can't even remember.

Last night, I tried again, concentrating on my out of control NG. I oiled my scalp with shikakai. Then added a little mahabhringraj and alma oils to my hair. I think gathered some coconut oil, saturated my hair, concentrating on my ends. Put a plastic bag on my hair, then tied my hair up with my scarf as usual.

This morning I awoke to a GORGEOUS head of hair, almost looking like I had a relaxer. WOW!! My NG looked like melted butter and my hair was so shiny. I combed just a little bit just to get the full effect of the results. Guess what? NO BREAKAGE!! :clapping::woohoo2:

Then I realized after reading so much about Indians using coconut oil. The reason why they saturate the hair and scalp with it and rely on coconut oil so much is that it makes their hair shiny and manageable. But an added benefit is that they also don't get too much breakage or shedding.

Coconut oil is supposed to address breakage and so far it's been great for me! :yep:

Yeah, I've been meaning to try the pure, unrefined coconut oil for some time now but I have so many other products I have to use. I think this would allow me to co-wash every three times a week and just finger comb with some coconut oil for moisture.

Note: For newbies, 99% of oils do not moisturize but coconut is one of those rare oils that has proven to do so and is why I would use it for moisture.

I purchased the Parachute brand coconut oil from an Indian grocery store last week. Does anyone know if it is unrefined, it says its 100% pure coconut oil. It smells :lick:

Sareca, how long does your jar of coconut oil last? It looks small in the picture but the description sounds yummy.

I love the smell of coconut oil; it's not heavy, the shine is wonderful and it makes my hair soft.

I'm not sareca, but I order their coconut oil
Don't let the pics fool you, I ordered the 4lb size for $25- it came in a huge jug and I've had it for over a year....a little goes a looong way! The smell is divine

Great responses everyone. Thanks  The reason I was asking was because I'd ordered some from oilsbynature.com recently and it seemed to have made my hair feel so luscious. But about 4 years ago, I'd ordered some from fromnaturewithlove.com and there didn't seem to be anything special about it then.

I was wondering which of my experiences with the coconut oil was the more common experience. I mixed some into Aubrey HSR along with some honey yesterday and moisture was great! (though HSR is already a good MC)

I have a question since I just started using coconut oil. Some say it can moisturize and some say to use it as a sealant. Which would I do? I need moisture for my hair, because I have permanent color on my hair currently. I love how it smells.

What do you all recommend?:perplexed

I read that it helps one to lose weight if taken (1 tablespoon) once in the morning and once in the evening.:superbanana:

I don't know about the weight loss thing since 1 tbs of the stuff contains roughly 130 calories (all of which are derived from fat) and 14g of fat ...but I use an organic unrefined cold-pressed version that I ordered online and it is divine. This oil in particular mixes well with everything and the last time I did my CO wash I mixed it in and sat under my hard-hat bonnet for 20 minutes and my hair came out amazingly soft. I use it for sealing in my moisturizers and for this pre-poo honey glycerin treatment I've tried. All have been very successful. I had my hair relaxed about and month and half ago and it's grown like crazy since. I'm relatively new when it comes to my haircare regimen and it's a constant battle that hasn't been perfected yet, but thus far it's been going well...in short I love coconut oil :yep:

Oh, ok. Thanks Healthytresses. I only saw 1/4lb size for $5.95. Wow, that was a good price you paid for a years supply!

its only one of the best oils ive ever used

its helped transform my hair

i refuse REFUUUSSEE to believe hair is dead

So I deep condition and wash my hair and realize I'm out of leave-in for my braid-out...so for the first time I use the unrefined coconut oil just a little and braided. I just knew it was going to be crunchy.

I have the softest hair. I really don't think my hair has been this soft. My Mom said it's hair Crack.:lick:

When I used to use Monoi oil (in coconut), it made my hair so very soft. I mean really soft. I can't believe I stopped using it. Plus it smelled so darn good. Thank goodness I ordered more yesterday.

Well...dang....

*jots down, needs to invest in a jug for '08....*

I like the fact that when I grease my scalp with my EVCO it instantly disappears into my scalp without a trace of oilyness. And it smells so nice and yummy.

I suspect it is slowly darkening my hair. The last 4 inches of my hair used to be naturally a medium red/light brown (due to spending a lot of time in the sun one summer three years ago) that stood in stark contrast to the rest of my hair, which is black. However, over the past year, my ends have darkened. I know it is not that they broke off because I have gained 6 inches instead of losing 4 inches, but they are definitely darker (like a dark brown now), and one of the main differences in my regimen is coconut oil.
