I am terrified to let my friend near my hair again, and the guy that colored my hair last week, I forgot to ask him if he knows what dusting is. Is that something stylists ususally know? My friend didn't know about it, and didn't listen obviously when I explained!! :wallbash: How often do you get your hair dusted? Anybody in Long Beach/Lakewood CA know a good 'duster'??

I'm sure they don't either...every time I've gone to a salon I would ask for "my ends" to be trimmed...but I would come out with a hair cut...so I just stay away from salons and stylist that loves to cut your hair...sorry...I had a flash back......but to answer your question...no they don't know.

My friend is a cosmetologist and she knows what it is and said that was discussed during her training.

My personal opinion is that a stylist who keeps you just right at your hair goal but not quite yet, is a stylist that always has a client in her chair. Thats how they make their living. Then again, most stylist dont expect the customer to know what that means and truth be told most people dont. I didnt until I joined this forum.

I so agree with you StellaB!!

And it is good to know that your friend knows about dusting...I hope other stylist are knowledgeable like her...:yep:

I agree too... I hope this guy that colored my hair can dust it for me, he did a great job on the color. But I don't have to worry about it, I'm not letting anybody with scissors near my head for a long, long time!

I will need to get a trim when I'm back in NY over the holidays and I'm almost terrified, but will not be using any new terminology to confuse them. I will be showing my stylist with my hand and making sure she fully grasps the concept of just how much I'm expecting to see on the floor. I'd be too afraid to use the term "dusting" even though it sounds like common sense.

heck no, they dont know what dusting mean. They dont even know what trim mean. To them, the terms dusting and trimming = cut.

I will probably get blasted for this, but dusting and trimming are the same thing. You are cutting the hair in some form, whether it is a little or alot. I am a stylist and I didn't not know what dusting meant until I found this site. However, I am not a scissor happy stylist anyway, never have been. I like hair.

I consult my client first before I cut them. I show my client what an inch looks like. We have numbers on are multipurpose combs that give measurements. I look at the persons ends and then tell them what I recommend. If they don't want that much cut, then I don't do it. I try to give them what they want or at least a happy medium.

Some stylists know what dusting is, but not many. The George Michael Salon in NYC is where i learned the term from - http://madoralonghairheaven.com/madorahistory.html
they cater mostly to long hair but most of that hair is caucasian so they still cut too much sometimes b/c they are not used to the shrinkage and unevenness and often slow growth of some of our hair. PLUS, the freaken trim costs $60!!!!!!!!! That doesnt counts styling or anything.

no they don't:rolleyes: Exactly why I picked up a pair of shears from Sally's and will be doing my own dustings/trims from now on.
