What do you guys think of dominican salons for African American Hair. I like them alot . There method of hair care is better than the rest. However, I do find that they still do some things to your hair that bother me. For example, after rollersetting I hate that they want to blow out you entire head. I feel its unecessary. My hair is always straight after the rollerset even when I need im many weeks post a relaxer. The only part of my hair I allow them to blow is the roots because thats where the new growth is. But for them to continue to blow dry hair thats already dry and straight is beyond me. I also feel that some of them when they relax out hair put too much chemical on the hair. It seems like they dont just put it on the new growth. I watched this lady and she put it on the ladys entire head and im telling u the lady hair was really straight on the ends. This could be the reason why so many girls have thin hair ends. Some of the hair stylist are rough too, they need to realize that our hair is sensitive and easy to breakage but sometimes they dont. And lastly i noticed they dotn put enough conditioner in my hair. They just put some on the top and I hate that. When I do my own hair I part each piece and place some conditioner all over cause I want it to really work well on moisturize my entire head.. Other than that I have no complaints. What do you guys think about this?

The dominican salon by me is very good. If you tell them to only blow the roots that's what they do. But I agree with you on the conditioner thing... they don't put enough conditioner. I thought it was because they were trying to conserve or something so I brought my own, but they still only use a little bit! But other than that they relax hair well. I have even seen one stylist there section the hair into 6 sections... three on each side going back. now I request that too, because my nape area is a problem so the extra section back there helps to prevent overlapping.

I just went to my dominican salon today. I go once a week and I love it. I find it funny when they keep trying to see if I'm dominican and talk spanish to me....never works cuz I'm not lol. Anyways they do my perms and they never perm the ends only the roots at all times. Also with the blow out part, you have to tell them to only do your roots if thats what u want. I only let them blow my roots when i'm like 4 weeks and more past my last perm. The main complaints i have about them is that they always wanna put a perm in your head as soon as they find out your like 5 weeks post...i try to push it to at least 8 weeks. Also they arent really up on the whole hair grease thing imo. But hey I can do that at home on my own cuz where else can i get a wash and set for $10 and under and hour and 15 mins????

Where is this salon?

I go to two different ones. One is Max's on south orange ave in newark and the other is "dominican salon" or something like that on Central Ave in Newark

It figures it would be somewhere near where I USED TO live... Not where I am now...:perplexed

Well at least you know where to go when you come back to Jersey :yep:

or better yet.. another reason to make my way up there.:yep:

I am actually thinking of going to the salon at the local walmart for a rollerset. The lady said she'll do it for me. Even though I'm natural... this is going to be funny...:drunk:

wow girl where do you live??? I didn't know there were salons at WALMART!?!?!

wow girl where do you live??? I didn't know there were salons at WALMART!?!?!

yeah see u like me... closest walmart to me was in Secaucus, unless I went all the way out on 22 to the ghetto one...:lachen::lachen:. But none the less neither of them had salons..

So my family and I move out to "nomansland" tx just outside houston.. and the 2 walmarts near me have salons... But from a coworker, she said that most of the walmarts out here have salons...

go figure..

I love my Dominican salon. I learned how to take care of my hair in the Dominican Republic.

Question is, what do you think of african american salons for african american hair? I mean, it's not really fair to generalize, especially since people are human and not perfect. I can list complaints I have with both types of salons.

thing is you have to speak up. if you want more conditioner, ask. you may have to pay for that, but ask.

better thing to do is to understand the culture of the stylist. because what you're saying is that your standard is good enough, and the stylist is working with a different standard. now, being the customer you should get what you want. but being a sensitive customer, you should understand that women mostly wear their hair down and straight. customers are her calling card and it's a cultural issue that is way to long to get into on this little post, but seriously when she's blowing you out she's giving you great service from that cultural perspective. but you don't have to have that. just understand the 'why'. Black people won't go to church with wrinkled clothes, and your stylist won't send you out in the street with a wave/curl on your head! it's just that simple.

why go to a Dominican salon if you want them to be anything other than Dominican?

this is good. good chance to learn and embrace differences within the diaspora.

IMHO.

lacriolla.. i think you are getting a bit offensive. I never said I hated the salons. I said they are better than the rest which includes salons run by african americans. I am not generalize I am stating my opinion. I am just saying they have their good and bad. And truthfully sometimes you cant speak up because some give you attitude or look at you as if you stupid thats why I dont bother. I just wanted to speak my mind and get others opinions is that so wrong? I dont think so

And sorry to say but why did you have to say that black ppl wont go to church with wrinkled clothes. That was kinda uh racist. Because I did not say anything regarding dominicans the race. I was strictly talkign about thier styling methods... If you are offended say so so I can apologize but dont go be spiteful and say that.. why didnt u just say ppl wont go to church in wrinkled clothes. be wise girl.. dont start trouble when its not needed. I feel that you are taking it personal because you are from the dominican republic and you love your culture but i really wasnt saying that to down them. Obviously I cant because I still go to them. And I never said that they way they straigthen hair is bad. I said that they go over already straighten hair which i feel is damaging to black hair. Our is not as strong due to the fact that it is relaxed so you want to avoid extra damage as much as possible. I love the fact that they deep conditioning every time you wash and roller set since its a low heat method... i really do ...

The bolded are the reasons I stopped going to them. My sides are HORRIBLE since I started going to them. My hair is SO thin right now. Messing with them set me back a year in progress.

They are very sloppy when they put the relaxer on, and they overlap like crazy. The last time I got a relaxer from them the lady had it dropping on my bag and my shirt. I said never again:nono: God forbid it went in my eye.

I see a lot of women in there with long, full hair but I believe their way of relaxing damaged my hair because I was doing everything else right. Mosturize daily, DC weekly, 12 week stretches, no heat whatsoever but yet my ends still looked like crap.

I went to them because all my friends raved about them and I have learned just because everyone raves about something doesnt mean it's for you.

I'm not saying all of them are like that but I am officially anti stylist now. Dominican, black, whatever......

thank you thats all i was saying girl. its true regardless of what some people want to believe. I observe and watch very carefully and sometimes I am very disappointed. It need to be realized that these salons are very popular and sometimes it seems some of the salons not alll .... let me make that very clear .. they seem to be more worried about how many people hair they can do and how fast than the quality.... Let me repeat... some not alll.

i think the one I went to was like that. That's why the put on so much relaxer:rolleyes: I liked that fact that I was in and out even on a saturday but not a the expense of my hair.:nono:

I don't think i even trust them with a rollerset, I'm too through........

I realize I'm one of the few people, on this board and IRL, that's over the dominican hype.

Well, I still go to them. However, I am trying to learn how to do my own hair. So I only go when I need a relaxer and i go to one person. This nice lady named Jackie. She takes her time with my hair and she dotn rush. I love it. I give her nice tips all the time. I will continue to go to dominican salons but I choose who I go to because I want quality can hate on a girl for that.

yeah if ur hair is thriving, i wouldn't stop going.

but for me after one bad stylist after another, black, then dominican, then guyanese (indian) im done! im a DIY now!

I'm sorry you misunderstood. Please read my post carefully. to answer your questions:

I am Black, not Dominican, and most definitely not racist. At my BLACK church, people dress their best. it's a part of our culture, our tradition. Similarly, it is custom, culture, tradition for Dominican ladies to wear straight hair, as told to me when I lived there. That is my point. So don't get upset if they don't understand why you don't want xyz. be upset if you ask and they don't give it to you.

I am not offended. Trying to expand your awareness. Hope that clears it up.

who told u its dominican culture to wear their hair straight. Did you get this from a specific source or is this something you just seem to think because thats what you see. Not all domicans liek to wear there hair straight so i say u are generalizing by saying that. I wouldnt say its part of their culture unless i was sure .. and my bad i thought you were dominican based on how you responded..

I definitely never said I grew up there. lol
My statement stems from living in the country for a few years.

I am not interested in arguing with you, and we can't have a conversation if you invent facts....

good luck.

Thanks good luck to you too but this is a blog where ppl post their opinions so if you call this arguing so be it. Love ya.. take care

and i said i wasnt sure about where u were from there cause i just skiimmed through ur message and i didnt read it correctly .it was an honest mistake..

I've been to Alba's, they were really rough. the ones you've mentioned, are they aggressive? I need someone who is really gentle

Am I in the OT Forum????? I thought this was the Hair Forum....lol.:lachen::lachen:

I love where I go for my hair. I have to admit...since I have been going, my hair has done a complete turn around. It's healthier than its ever been before....and I'm so pleased!

First, she washes me well and does excellent rinsing. That is key. I get a deep conditioner (Affirm...the best, thanks Supergirl) and then she rollersets me, and she does an excellent job, being that I'm natural and my hair is so curly and soft.

After the rollers come out, she blows lightly (no high heat) and not straight, straight. She then puts some really good stuff in my hair and then wraps me and puts me back under the dryer for about 3-5 minutes. When I comb my hair down the next day....I gets compliments from hispanic, caucasians and AA on where I go to get my hair done. My hair is bouncy, healthy, strong, and beautiful.

I wrap my hair every night and my hair lasts for about 1 1/2 weeks before I know I need to wash it again. I wait until 2 1/2 weeks before I go back again and I'm always so happy afterwards.

The girl that does my hair loves my hair. She keeps saying it looks so healthy now and so strong. I have no hair coming out, ladies!

Also, what I love about the DS that I go to...they don't speak in spanish much...mostly english. I think that is so respectful to those of us who don't speak or understand their language. Also, they are very helpful in letting you know what products they use for hair...they don't hide it like I hear other people talking about. That's a plus for me!

Blessings!
