Post the pics of when your hair was at its lowest point..i think this will help us realise just HOW MUCH we have achieved!!

- What was you doing at the time?
- How did you overcome?

Heres mine - February 2005:
See-through - breaking terribley - very dry - lots of buildup...i was going to give up!

ewwwwgo2.jpg

I used to:

  • comb scurl through my hair
  • use lots of heat
  • comb too much
  • use too many products

I overcame by:

  • using my brains and not following the latest 'product'
  • learnt how to airdry properly
  • invest in quality products (i was using MOTIONS at the time and was convinced it helped my hair even though i saw multiple threads saying it was no good!)

What about you guys?

I wish I had a story to add but...GREAT THREAD! I can't wait to see more.
Candy- great progress! To tell you the truth, I would love my hair to look like your first pic. length and fullness!

Come on ladies dont be shy..be BRAVE! you may inspire someone to make a change for their hair!!

- Determine3 - nah believe me, it was crumbling, the thickness just hides the problems!

My hair has improved a lot since discovering this forum. It has grown in much fuller than when I first joined in 2004. Currently, I'm trying to get more length, but there haven't been any drastic changes in that respect. I'm very happy with the results, and I'll keep on hoping and praying for more length. Yesterday my aunt told me how healthy my hair looked and my dad asked me if I had a weave :lachen: . The last pic below was one year ago and still represents my approximate current length--I've been too lazy to post new pics. It is good to remember where we've come from, especially when we're discouraged.

Would you be able to share the secret to air drying properly???

My hair was dry and not just breaking... it was crumbling!
I used to brush it 3X/day, I never used moisturizer.
I hadn't even heard of moisturizing conditioner much less used one.
I was abusing heat (not using it often, just really really hot and with no heat protectant)
I was also using a protein conditioner 2X/week.

Sept 2005

Took me over a year to find the right reggie. Now I do low manipulation (thanks 2 sylver2, lonei, pokahontas), oil rinses, henna monthly (VWVixxen), and DC dry hair with heat regularly.

Of corse, my pleasure!

If your hair is under brastrap length and below shoulder length, the best way to airdry is in a pony tail, and then clippining this tail softly under, into a type of loose bun.

make sure you have put a good oil moisturizer and leave in onto the pony and some oil, coconut oil is the best hands down!

relase this bun the next day, or many hours later, and continue to airy with the hair hangin down. this will keep the roots flat and the hair thouroughly moisturized

or what i used to do, is keep the hair clipped under, cover with a durag - sleep, wake up, remove scarf and either use a headband over the roots (so my hair doesnt look too boring and leave the bun alone (maybe re-clip if needed) and make sure never to comb the hair until my next shampoo.

I was soooooo pick headed! It looked like a chicken had a feast on my head!!:lachen: Ahhh yes, time changes all things. I've weathered the storm indeed.

I think my hair improved from being short and thin, uneven and broken off to thick and I also gained length since I stopped cutting it.

I used to relax my whole head, never moisturize and always wear my hair out.
Heat protectants were un-known to me.:ohwell:

Sorry that this pic is so small but it starts clockwise at the bottom right and shows my progress including cuts since I joined the board.

This is my hair now at ca 21/22 weeks post relaxer

Ella, your hair was thin mami. Now it looks so nice and thick! Where are you on your APL challenge because I know we're almost the same length? I'm not that far in the back.

WOW! Everyone has made tremendous progress!

Here is my hair's worst moment.

This was October 2006. This pic was my first ever protective style - a term I learned from LHCF. That piece of hair I was holding would not grow past a certain point at all. Now, I can't even find it! :-)

AfroTwistBack2-1.jpg

Up to this point:
I was wearing braids for 6 weeks.
Giving myself a 2 week break.
I was blowdrying after every weekly wash and pressing my hair every 2 weeks. But I was deep conditioning.
Not moisturizing at all in between washes.
Only used hair oil.
Not doing any protective styles.

I just covered my hair with a scarf when I went out.

Here's where I'm at today. YAY!

S6002831.jpg

Some of the changes I've made:
I started moisturizing with Qhemet Biologics heavy cream after every wash and before every protective twist/braided style.
I never comb dry hair. It's either dampened with moisturizer or conditioner or wet with water or spritz.
I prepoo with oils and conditioners.
I deep condition for an hour or overnight.
I only use heat once or twice a year when I straighten my hair.
I still oil my scalp.

Before KHCF I always had crazy, thick Jamaican hair, but could not get ANY length! I work out a lot and play competitive volleyball, so my stylists always said the sweat and thickness of my hair would make sure that it would not grow any longer then shoulder length?

BOOTTYYY!:wallbash:

Anyhow's, I have been taking care of my hair on LHCF since 2004 in the following ways:
1. Relaxer every three months w/dusting
2. Chi-iron on roots after second month only
3. Silk scrunchy, pillow at night
4. ROLLERSETS ARE MY BFF 4 LIFE!
5. KeraCare products, Joico K-Pak and EVOO 4 Life!!!
6. WASHING, ROLLING AND DRYING HAIR MYSELF!
7. FINDING A STYLISTS THAT KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DUSTING, TRIMMING AND CUTTING
8. Working out on a regular basis, for some reason the sweat and impurities get out and the length stays in!

Seriously, my hair has come a long way with LHCF from layered, breaking above shoulder hair to below the shoulder, black, silky, one-length hair! F
Feels heavy on my shoulders!!!

It probably is shrinkage. We're about what and what. Happy hair growing Miss I don't IM my chat buddy anymore!
Naw don't you pressure me into getting internet at home,I have a life now and I quite enjoy it:lachen:
(I'm halfway in a new contract tough,I miss chatting with ya:perplexed)

Harana your progress is beautiful.... wow!!!!:yep:

Harana  your hair has made amazing progress, it looks great now. I like the sound of your regime. Im gonna take up the bolded part, i never thought of doing that because i can't do without combing my hair.
