How are you combating dryness this winter?

Now that the heat is on 24/7 I've noticed that I've been drying up. My skin is dry and I wake up with a dry nose that hurts. I can only imagine what my hair is going through. This is a real concern for me. Even though I go easy on the heat, this dry atmosphere could set me back again if I'm not careful. For now I keep my ends up as much as possible. I also put a little Kemi Oyl on the ends only when I go outside and when I come back in.

What do you do?

I am considering either going back to DCs 2x/wk or one of my washes will be a CWC. I will continue my protective styles and low manipulation. And my Vatika daily.

I think my hair has been responding to the lack of moisture in the air from this drought we have been going through for the past several months.

I've been so worried about having a setback from the weather. I'm gonna start slathering on the oil & moisturizer before I go outside, prepooing, and adding oils to my d/c. If all that doesn't work, it's back to d/cing 2x/week.

OP, have you thought about getting a humidifier?

I'll be moisturizing and sealing with an oil 1x a day (maybe 2x if I feel the need). I will also be making one big braid to conserve moisture. I'm gonna get my APL by May 08

I had to get out the humidifier early this year. I've been running it full blast for almost 3 weeks. The air in my house was really dry.

I am definitely breaking out the humidifier. It is a must if my heat is on. This past week I have worn a scarf and hat when outside, so my hair hasn't dried out. I plan to keep up with my regimen, after this week I will start shikaikai rinses/ pooing every 2-3 weeks, and keep moisturizing/sealing as needed.

While in a bun I'll be moisturizing twice a day and being consistent with using heat while deep conditioning...

I have been co-washing my hair instead of shampooing and that has been helping with the dryness. I also moisturize and seal my ends with with oil in the evenings. When my hair is still a bit dry I moisturize and seal in the a.m. as well. I'm also going to purchase a humidifier.

ETA: Silk scarf under the hat and bunning (my hair is always in a bun anyway )

I am wearing a weave for the winter and keeping my hair moisturized, cleaning my scalp and putting little heat on my hair that is left out.

For my skin, I use this: it lives my skin smelling good and hydrated and so soft, this is the bomb!!!!

For my hair, renutrients moisture cream, sunsilk hydra tlc, and castor oil, conditioner washes with carrot oil deep conditioner, oil rinses.

Homemade Caramel masks.
JBCO
Aveda USC

Just purchased Qhemet's Amla and Olive Heavy cream, Olive and Honey Hydrating balm, and Karkady Tea mist.

I'm not playing around this winter!!!

This is my plan too. :yep:

Last winter it was hell trying to keep moisture in my hair... and I'm not one for the bunning or protective styles so :ohwell:

I had my first weave installed one month ago. I'm planning to keep my hair hydrated underneath. I'm also running the humidifier. And for the most part, keep my hair weaved up till April.

Let's see how this goes. I do get bored with wearing the same style really easily. :look:

I know yawl probably don't want to hear this but dryness is one thing I don't have to worry about during our so-called winters. It was 84 today. Just move to my part of Arizona for the winter and you won't have any problems with dry har :lachen::lachen::lachen:.

I am rocking a sewn in for the rest of the winter. Or atleast it's harshest days. December/January! Which leaves me alot of TLC time with my edges, and the hair that I left out on top. I have noticed it getting a bit dry, but it is much easier for me to just slather on some moisturizer with the sewn in.

Ive been seeing alot of raves about this Qhemet's Amla and Olive Heavy cream...
Ladies can this be purchased in the store or just online? Also where?
I think I might try this for the winter months

Since I'm stepping up my workouts, getting ready for Spring '08, I'm more conscious of my hair than ever before. Not to mention the fact that I'm coming up on 19 weeks post relaxer. So it is critical that I continue to take care of this NG. It's a challenge that has actually been surprisingly fun. I wear hats while outside. Before a workout, I apply a little bit of conditioner to my NG and ends, then seal with broccoli seed oil. I step up my condition washes, only washing with shampoo on Sunday evenings. During the week, I CW every two or three days, adding in an oil rinse with alma/shikaiki oil. So far, so good. This time of year I can always expect shedding. I know a lot of ladies are witnessing shedding which is normal. What I'm keeping a closer eye on is breakage. I've had only a few broken hairs but not enough to cause alarm. I do a protein treatment every other week, followed by a very deep moisturizing condition treatment. So far, so good...

ETA: D.C. ladies, the weather doesn't seem to be getting that much cooler this coming week. I've heard in the '60s!:wallbash::blush:

Oh yeah, thanks for sharing!!!!:lachen::lachen::lachen:

And your solution, brilliant....I'm going off to pack and book my flight. I'm crashin at your place too.:lachen::grin:

I'm oil rinsing, conditioning washing, and wearing a satin cap in my house...when I go out, I'm going to wear a cap with a satin doo-rag I stole from my man friend...he get's them from his mom in packs, and they are really nice:grin:

Good I just posted trying to figure out why my hair is SO SO SO SO dry. Maybe the weather is why since i live in upstate ny where it's very cold and dry I just finished slathering it up with BB oil moisturizer! Well maybe it's a good idea if I put my hair in my honeycomb braid style thing and just oil rinse and moisturize my ng and wear my head wraps because the weather is going to get VICIOUS up here, besides I know i'll get a lot of ng with that braided style and my growth aides!

I'll be moisturizing and sealing with an oil 1x a day (maybe 2x if I feel the need).

This is what I am going to do. I really have not had the need to use daily moisturizers but my hair has been drier than normal the past few weeks.

I am also going to wear my hair up on very cold, windy days. Right now, I have been still wearing it down for the most part, but that is really going to have to stop soon.

I'm definitely doing more protective styles like bunning or wearing a single braid. I also rely on products. Vitapointe is great for this time of year. Also I treat myself to Ojon Restorative Treatment as a leave-in oil. If my hair is really moisture deprived I'll seal my moisturizer (Africa's Best Liquid Mayo or Kids Organics Shea Butter lotion) w/a dab of Hollywood Beauty Castor Oil Treatment.

I think I'll be alright this winter. I have a nice moisture thing going on right now and I have some things that I think will get me through.

Castor Oil
Qhemet Amla & Olive Heavy Cream
Ojon Leave in Glossing Cream
Dove Moisture Mist
Amla Oil

These should do me right nice :yep:

Freqent Conditioner washes, deep condtioning, and moisturizing w/ shea butter. Its pretty warm this week compared to last week..But for my graduation in dec I am getting a weave for the straight look bc I don't want to use heat on my hair.

  • DC'ing weekly
  • Co-washes with oil rinses (JBCO, Coconut oil, alma oil)
  • Less shampoo or shampoo twice a month with natural shampoo or shampoo that does not contain SLS (Shikakai rinses)
  • Leave in with Cantu Shea Butter
  • Protective styling (french braid or low ponytail with the ends pinned up)
