In African-American culture what is considered long hair?

Because of some Biblical studying I have done, I am in the process of deciding whether or not I want to start wearing head coverings and head wraps.

Hey Tffy,

You may have better luck in the hair forum. But it is late, so it could go either way.

If you dont get too many responses, ask for it to be moved to the Hair forum...

Voted APL and longer..
I never really thought SL was long even a little past SL mainly b/c many AA's reach this length, however many have problems getting to APL and beyond....

I'd say APL and longer. I think that's when people start oohing and ahing. They do start making comments just past SL though...

i think longer than collarbone... basically APL+ is considered "long."

what does the headwraps have to do with your question? (don't mean to sound rude, i'm jsut curious :look: )

I've asked friends, mainly black men, what they consider long in terms of hair length and they responded with shoulder and beyond.

Sending you a PM about it. It has to do with the Bible and I don't want the thread to be moved.

I'd also like to know as well. I too have been considering if I want to wear headwraps or not but I'm still not certain :perplexed

I voted shoulder. My hair has been a little past shoulder for years now and AAs have told me a number of times that it was long. This girl ran her hand through my hair and said, "Your hair is so long". It was shorter than it is now.

ITA. Before coming to LHCF i was stuck at SL. I was told all my life i had long hair.:ohwell:

So was I. When I was relaxed, I remember most people commenting on my "long" hair. I'm natural now, so people can't tell how long it is or isn't.

My mother and sister have SL hair though, maybe a little past, and they've always been told that they had long hair too. So I voted SL and beyond.

I think in general black women who dont know about hair care yet are either trying to get to shoulderlength, or stuck at it. Shoulderlength is like the big mileston....so shoulderlength & anything longer is probally considered long hair

I personally thought SL was long, but "average long" & anything past it was really amazing.

If you are talking about women on LHCF opinions on long hair i believe kninikakes (sp) has a poll asking what long hair was to people.

I agree with this:yep:! I also voted for APL and longer.

I think most African Americans would say thick full shoulder length hair is long. If it's shoulder length and thin, probably not. However, I voted APL, because I think thick or thin, people notice the length. I hope that makes sense :perplexed.

I soo agree with this whole statement.:yep:

I voted SL as long. All of my life I've heard people and family members comment on how long so and so's hair is at shoulder length or just below.
I remember thinking it myself when I saw an older Halle Berry movie (The Rich Man's Wife) earlier this year and last year, where her hair was shoulder length in a flip. It looked long to me. :yep:

I think that if the hair is thick then APL is long. If it is thin (like what I had when I was relaxed) I think BSL sometimes even midback is long. This is for the opinion a female. I noticed that a lot of men think that anything past the shoulders is long.
