Ok ladies quick question

I have personally been using Hollywood Beauty castor oil treatment to seal my hair but am thinking of changing. It works great and makes my hair incredibly soft but for almost 4 dollars for 2 oz it's a lil much. I have seen it in the solid form but I am not sure how it works. It is definately more for your money though.

I know that regular ole castor oil is easy to find and cheap but I have heard wonderful things about coconut oil also. So my question to you all is what's the better sealent castor oil or coconut oil? And which form of them are better i.e liquid or solid? Take in consideration everything (the way it works, how it feels, smells, budget) and give me your opinion.

Thank you in advance my dear hairipists Type 4 ladies I am especially interested in your opinion

I'm a 4 something and I love castor oil! I buy a 12oz bottle from the health food store for about $6. I haven't tried coconut oil so I can't compare the two.

Kenedie,

Thanks lady. I know the Hollywood Beauty kind is very thin but mixed with a bunch of other oils. Is pure castor oil thick or thin?

The kind I have is thick. I mix it with EVOO or almond oil and use it as a sealant. I stopped using castor for a while but I just started back and my hair is thanking me. It helped to stop my shedding and brought back my natural luster.

I voted for liquid castor oil. Pure castor oil is thick, but it thins out nicely when you warm it or rub it between your palms. I've also mixed it with my QP Mango Butter and used that on my ends...love it!

The smell is kind of neutral...not overpowering at all. I purchase Walgreen's brand for $3.

I'm relaxed-4b and voted for both, "liquid castor oil" and "liquid coconut oil,"because I use both of these regularly.

For the most part, I use coconut oil (light oil) to seal when I plan to wear my hair down, and castor oil (a bit heavy) when I wear my hair up in a bun or hair clip.

I used coconut oil in the past. I prefer Castor oil. I had the most results with castor oil versus any other product. It is a staple in my house.

I use Jamaican black castor oil for sealing my wet hair(freshly shampoo'd) and I use Vatika coconut oil at nite on my hair before tying in a scarf...and this conditions my hair at nite softening my new growth.

So I voted for JBCO liquid for a great sealant... too bad I couldn't vote for both equally!

I voted for liquid castor oil. I've tried both castor oil and coconut oil but coconut just sits on my hair, castor oil penetrates my hair leaving it soft and shiny.

i haven't tried coconut oil but regular castor oil works wonders for me. I guess it's a little bit thick and sticky to apply but it doesn't bother me that much. It doesn't have a strong smell either... i got a huge 2lb bottle from camdengrey.com which seems like it's gonna last for years :drunk:

I use both, but I love JBCO. As far as coconut oil goes, I use the kind you get from the grocery store. My nose can't tolerate the smell of raw, pure coconut oil. I don't know why it's like that. I can stand the smell of MTG and Amla oil, but can't get used to raw coconut oil. Go figure:ohwell:

I voted for both. I use liquid castor oil in my conditioners for more slip and added softness when airdrying. I use solid coconut oil daily to seal in my moisturizers because it's lighter. I'm in love with them both.

Where can you find the liquid castor oil? I have the thick gloppy kind from the health food store. I would love to add it to my conditoners..but I thought it would make my hair sticky. Perhaps the liquid kind is not sticky?

:notworthy Thank you ladies so much for replying. I'm thinking maybe I made the right decision from the start and should stick with the castor oil. It is just something about the coconut oil that is calling me . Especially if it is as light as you ladies suggest. With my hair being short I want something not so heavy.

Glad to know that it's easy to thin out the regular castor oil. That was a big concern of mine as far as getting it. Castor oil is where my heart is right now because it makes my hair sooooo soft. I also see that the JBCO is still making its mark. Why y'all wanna make me order this stuff I'm trying to be good :yep:

Well, I still haven't made the trek to the BSS yet so y'all get at me. I still have a lil bit of mine left and will use that up before I purchase. Oh yeah and thanks a bunch for a run down on the sites and prices. You know I checked them out

I cheated:blush: I voted liq castor and liq coconut. Castor oil was my first staple oil and I will love it forever. When I first tried coconut I didnt like it as much but now I love it it behaves like a serum in my hair, sometimes I mix them.

The thick gloppy kind is the type that I use from the health food store (Wild Oats/ Whole Foods). I just add a little to my deep conditioner it isn't really thick or sticky at all to me. My hair gets really dry so the castor oil + conditioner combo helps alot to keep it moisturized.

Ooooh I wanna try it tonight!! LOL so you just put a couple or three drops in your usual serving of conditoner...do you heat it up first or something to mix them? It really does help with the mositure for sure!!:yep:

Right now I love african angel coconut oil. Since using it my air has taken a change for the better. I will try castor oil and pure coconut oil soon and see how they work. I know my hairdresser said that she would get some Jamaican Black Castor Oil for me, she said that you cannot buy it any and everywhere because it may not be the real thing. She is Jamaican by the way so she knows what she is saying.

I love Coconut oil. You have to get used to the smell though. But coconut oil makes my hair so soft and moisturized.

I chose Liquid Castor Oil! I have the JBC oil  I haven't tried the coconut oil but will most likely soon. The JBCoil leaves my hair soft, and full of sheen!

I voted for both liquid castor oil and liquid coconut oil (vatika). I love them both, castor oil especially for my ends and to get my edges smooth and vatika on my scalp hair everything great for shine:grin: they both keep my hair soft and the castor oil helps me retain moisture

I voted liquid castor oil. I tried coconout oil, extra virgin in the solid form, but it was really thin and not what I needed at the time. I'll probably purchase some in the future since I know how to use it now. But right now I need my castor oil. I dilute it with jojoba and use it as a sealant and occasionally on my scalp.

:infatuated:I love castor oil. I use it all the time now. My hair is so soft and silky after using it. I use it with my deep conditioners, also. So, that's what I voted for. I do use coconut oil, but usually mixed with conditioners or leave ins. I only use that once in a while.

I love castor oil. I use it in everything like my DC, my Leave in and as a sealant. it's improved my moisture SO much. Coconut oil is ok, but castor oil is better IMO.
It isn't heavy at all (the trick is to use a small amount). I only use about a dime size and my longest layer is a little past shoulder length

I don't know why my pj self keep hesitating so hard on trying this castor oil. I want to try it but haven't been pushed over to the other side yet. I use the organic coconut oil because I absolutely love the smell. Once I'm sold on the smell I'm pretty much a diehard convert.

ETA: Nevermind-I just ordered the JBCO-too many great reviews-must try for myself to satisfy my curiosity.

Wow ladies thanx for the response. I guess I am still leaning toward the castor oil. I never thought of it in terms of the moisturization and the whole nine. Let me find out castor oil be dat fiyah :burning:

For those who do use the coconut what brands. I saw Vatika mentioned but are there any others. Don't laugh but in all this time I never knew what Vatika was just saw it mentioned often on here.

Again thanx and keep the suggestions coming

I've been using Nutiva organic extra virgin coconut oil. I tried the Louann brand out of the grocery store and I didn't like it at all:nono:

every once and awhile- castor oil for smothing down my edges. coconut oil most days as a light oil all over.

I have fine hair, so using castor oil is a trick. Here's what I do:

At night, only, I add a medium-thick consistency moisturizer to my hair, then take about a dime-size worth of castor oil (light or dark is fine) and seal the hair, concentrating particularly on the ends. I then take a silk scarf and tie my hair up, go to bed.

In the morning my hair is nice, supple and soft. I think adding the castor oil at night rather than in the morning helps a lot. I think you could roll your hair up as well. I just smooth my hair back, tie the scarf, then put a bonnet on. (I believe this is the scarf method created by Sylver2.)

Also in the morning, I use a "light" moisturizer, then seal with a very light oil only IF I need to. Here's where you could use the coconut oil because it's lighter in consistency. I will either use coconut or avocado creme by Candy_C ().I think doing the moisturizer/castor oil at night helps so much that I rarely need to do the process in the morning, thus weighing my hair down.

I hope this helps,

SP ;)
