I just got finished reading the Brazilian Kertain treatment article in Allure magazine. There is no way in heck that that stuff would ever touch my head. I can't believe people even get this. Has anyone read it yet??

the key to the whole process is Formaldehyde. A mortician discovered it when he was preparing a womens body for burial. The solution contains a ton of it. Formaldehyde is harmful and the "safe" accepted levels at .2. The levels in these solutions range from 2.3 to 10.0. It makes your eyes burn, you skin burn and when they heat with the the flat iron, the formaldehyde vaporizes to you breathe it in. Formaldehyde does the straightening but you are supposed to let the solution sit on your hair for 3-4 days. In order to make the time shorter, people use the higher 7 and 10% levels. Check the article out, scary stuff.

What in the world is the benefit from the treatment?

It seems like folks would be passing out from the formaldehyde... and for what?

It is a straightening treatment. It is the "new" hot straightening method. Many salons after recent articles about the dangers and how osha is starting to get involved, have suspended giving the treatment but some stylist have started going to brazil and buying bottles of the strong (real) stuff to bring them back and do on the low for people

OK, I see now. It really doesn't sound worth it at all. :nono:

I was very interested in the BKT and decided to try it. Seemed simple enough when I read the directions. So, I got a bottle, washed my hair, blowed it dry, put on some of the BKT, then started to blow dry with a round brush. My eyes and throat immediately started burning from the fumes. :nono:

I can't describe this well but as soon as the BKT solution gets warm there are these fumes that are very strong. I had on gloves and a mask but I can't imagine what kind of mask could be used that would stop damage to the eyes and throat.

After just a few seconds, I knew it wasn't worth it and washed the stuff out of my hair. I still have the bottle of BKT under my bathroom sink.

I've heard there is formaldehyde-free version of the BKT. :look:

I'm surprised to hear you did this - I thought there was a special machine that needed to be used and misting brush?

I'll see if I can find the other threads and bump.
I was really interested in the Tanagra system; reconstructing keratin treatment, and sort of interested in the BKT keratin straightening system. I knew there was some formaldehyde but didn't know it was that much!!!

I'm surprised at myself too but I discounted the possible effect on my health until I smelled just how strong the fumes are. Then I got some sense back quick.

I believe the one with the brush and the mist is the Tanagra nanokeratin system. I don't think Tanagra has formaldehyde. Also, I don't think it is meant to straighten but is a protein treatment to strengthen the hair.

So I don't understand. Why would someone do this as opposed to getting a regular relaxer? Does it straighten future new growth too so that you never have to do it again? I don't get it.

ok this is toooooooooooooo scary. formaldehyde ain't no joke! i was watching a show about katrina victims that live in fema trailers and they were talking about the respiratory and other health problems they had b/c the cupboards in their trailers had high concentrations of formaldehyde. op: thanks for the info

This website bothers me because they recommend this to kids as young as 6, they also claim that it is "safe" they don't even mention the formaldehyde in it.:wallbash: They do briefly touch on the fact that it's not recommended to pregnant women and infants shouldn't be near it due to the fumes. That's why it's good to do your own research on something before you use anything.

Hey Gymfreak, thanks for posting this. I am reading the article right now; and it is down right scary. It's so sad that, that poor woman died after having on her head for 4 days. At one time I was actually considering trying it on my hair.I had no idea it had a large percentage of formaldehyde in it. When I worked in the funeral business, I was using formaldehyde all the time on the bodies, and that chemical is no joke! It is super dangerous to the living.

Why the devil would she have had it on her head for FOUR DAYS???? According to the article, it only takes TWO HOURS to do - not four days?!? Oh my god, you might die if you kept a relaxer on your head for four days!!

Seriously - I would never use it (for the same reasons I would never use a relaxer) but, seriously, I doubt that it kills people if used in a controlled manner. I mean, if brief exposure to levels of controlled formaldehyde was that dangerous, embalmers would be dropping dead left and right all the time.

Many embalmers don't use it anymore either and they don't use really high levels of it. What really makes this bad is that you have to heat it which vaporizes the chemicals. Some of the milder versions require you to leave it on for atleast 3 days. Ain't No way:nono:
