I have no idea if a thread like this already exists, but I figure I would make one for anyone who wants to chime in, needs a thread to post in, or wants to find or learn about other hair accessories and ways to style buns, braids, twists, etc.

I’m more obsessed with hair forks and sticks than I am with products, although the two are cutting extremely close.

I’ve learned a lot of bun variations from another hair site I’ve been a member of for some years. I’m constantly on Etsy looking at wooden or acrylic handcrafted doodads for my hair.

Depending on how much hair you have, and how willing your hair is to hold the stick/form, will determine your success with things like this. For the natural ladies, the thinner stick/forks will be easier to slide and secure a bun.

If anyone isn’t familiar with what bun variations are I’ll post plenty of tutorials on bun variations. They’re rather simple once you get the hang of it, and it’s mostly just looping and securing your hair around itself in some sort of fancy updo.

Awesome thread! I used to use these religiously sticks and forks until I got lazy. Now I use a big jaw clip over my bun. I'll see if I can find pictures when I'm back at my laptop.

Ev-er-y timeee I try a hair Barrett it don't work out. Attached is me trying an accessory: fail. It snags and it's too small for my hair.

May I ask if that’s like a claw clip of some sort?

Have you ever tried Flexi 8’s ? They’re like clasps for the hair with a hair stick attached instead of of that metal clasp like hair Barretts. I have issues with the snagging too. Hate it.

I need to find the website where they make them. I think you’d need a L or XL.

For sticks it helps to insert it horizontally and not so close to the scalp, since it tends to pick up hairs right at the scalp and pull. If you’ve got your bun set up, it helps to bring the stick horizontally through the sides of the bun not so close to the scalp. Do a slight “over-under”maneuver so the stick can hold the hair.

But if it’s still difficult or painful I’d say no need to worry. There’s a bunch of other things out there

Oh those things! Yea definitely. I call them alligator clips, but I’m pretty sure they have a different name.

Love this thread and definitely looking for some bun tutorials if you have them. I stay in a bun most of the time when not doing twist outside. I mainly use sticks and have some flexi-8's as well although I need to order more in L and XL for buns. @I Am So Blessed, you can get them from the Lila Rose website.

And today is technically wash day, so I’ll put a few picture tutorials up, and then explain as I go. It’s not too difficult. And I’ll post other YouTube videos I see too since theirs will probably be more simple than my own.

I’m trying to make step by step instructions with pictures. Sometime tonight I’ll have them for everyone to see next morning and follow along. Just maybe 4-5 simple things to start out with.

Most of those sticks are Amazon, the green fish one, and the blue topped one and the tassels are from Etsy.

My wishlist ones are from Etsy, but I’ll save up for those since they’re on the pricey side. Maybe one each year? Or one every six months as like a gift to myself lol

Okay so I did 4 tutorials for you guys. Two are videos since they’re the quickest and time saving buns probably ever made lol. If you need to pause and slow down the video, by all means do. Give some attention to how I place the stick because that’s whats going to allow your bun to stay in place. It’s a slight over-under maneuver, and if you need extra support you can use bobby pins if needed. Just make sure you aren’t pulling your hair too tightly at the beginning of making your buns.

This is the LWB (lazy wrap bun).

Rose Bun:
This one is going to be picture step by step. I tried to take a small amount of pictures so it’s not too confusing.

Make a ponytail. Take some hair from the sides of the ponytail. But sure they are smaller than the section that’s going to be the bun.

Make a small LWB . If you hair stays up on it’s own just tuck the ends into the bun. If your hair tends to fall due to its density you can secure it with bobby pins. Make sure to keep your tail of hair out because you are going to wrap that around the base of the LWB. So you should have something along the lines of this so far

Take your tail and twist or braid it. Then wrap your tail around your bun, and secure it. If you need to use bobby pins please do. Here’s the twisted piece and what the motion should look like indicated by an arrow. You can wrap it counterclockwise or clockwise, whichever is more comfortable:

The braid or twisted part is what’s going to give it that swirl look like the inside of a rose.

You can adorn with whatever you like. Clips, pendants, forks, etc. If you use a stick or fork, place it BEHIND the bun closest to your scalp. Just be gentle and wiggle it through so it’s not too tight, and use sticks or forks that don’t have fine teeth or are too thick because the stick or fork probably won’t budge one bit lol. Metal forks or sticks tend to be better than wood since they slide easier.

Cameo Bun:
This bun tends to look different on straighter hair types, and the steps are a bit different, but I modified it for Afro textured hair, with less steps, so anyone can still rock this style.

Start with a ponytail where the hair hasn’t been pulled all the way through, forming a small bun:

Part the hair that’s forming your tail at the bottom. You should have two parts like this:

Take your parts and wrap one going in one direction, and take the other and wrap it in the opposite direction and tuck the ends. In a motion like this:

Play around with how loose or tight you want the wrapped parts to be. And if you need to secure it with bobby pins, as always, please do so. If your hair stays on it’s own then that’s fine too.

You should have something like this:

And as usual if you want to add a stick or fork, make sure to put it behind your bun. Like this:via Imgflip Meme Generator

This cameo bun I did was rushed, but I’m sure you guys can make better ones than mine lol.

Few notes:

•For the natural ladies, if your shrinkage is serious, find whatever product you like/use that can stretch out your hair a bit. It doesn’t need to be as stretched out as possible, but enough so that you have enough hair to form your bun. If you have no problems with your shrinkage, or you can make your buns just fine, ignore this bit, by all means.
• PLEASE don’t try to make these buns on sopping wet hair. They won’t stay put and breakage is probably guaranteed. Damp hair is fine, just gauge what’s comfortable for you.
• for the relaxed ladies, it’s recommended that you try not to make buns too tight, espeacially prior to or right after a relaxer just to keep your scalp calm.
•If you’re experiencing breakage, either stop completely, or loosen up your grip on your hair. If you’re still experiencing breakage, assess whether you need a treatment. Whether it’s more moisture, or protein. And try again at a later time.
• If you’re experiencing snags, tangles, or small bits of hair pulling, take your time, start over if you have to, and detangle if needed, or move your hair around to where it comfortable, or replace whatever hair accessory to a comfy spot where there’s no excessively tight tension.
• Be gentle, Be, Gentle, Be gentle. Please. Espeacially if you’re a fine haired lady like myself.
•If your hair is at a length where you don’t have enough hair just yet, try modifying certain steps. For the Nautilus, try taking out the step where your wrap your hair around your fingers, and form only one loop and then secure with whatever is comfortable. For the LWB see if you can make at least one wrap around and then secure, or whatever modification if easier for you.
•Above all else, if any style isn’t working for you, DONT FORCE IT. There’s nothing set in stone, and this is just for enjoyment and trying new styles. If you can’t seem to get it, keep trying, if you still can’t, big whoop, maybe you’ll get it next time when you back around to it. It took me 6 months to get the Nautilus Bun down pat. So see what works for YOU. Okay? Lol




I think that’s it for this post ladies. These buns are pretty much very basic buns, that can be modified and they’re the easiest to learn and the quickest to make. They also suit shorter lengths as well.

If anything seems confusing or you need more info just ask away, I’ll try to help as much as possible, other than that please experiment and see what else you come up with, I’m excited to see what you guys come up with, as I’m sure it’ll be very pretty.

I’ll add 1-2 more basic bun styles, and then add 2-3 more braided/twisted bun styles. Over the course of the month or next month.

Beautiful thread OP! I'm actually lowkey obsessed by hair sticks, forks etc. There was an old thread here that's actually the reason I found the forum. I'm still waiting for my hair to get long enough (evenly, all around) so I can start using these.

Not sure if I still have the photos, because they were all in my Fotki and that’s gone for me now. But I do still have the accessories. I wear a Ficcare Maximus about half the days in a week. I also war sticks often, occasionally a fork. I have a few sticks that are beautiful one of a kind by someone who no longer makes them. They were really pricey, but worth it. I haven’t bought an accessory in probably a year or two, but that pink lemonade wave fork is triggering the old itch. My biggest hair crush used to wear accessories a lot, though I can’t remember her name now. I used to be all up and through her Fotki

Once you wrap your hair around the two fingers, twist your wrist around, it’s mostly in the motion, and it’ll form a little loop.

(Think of that new song by the Migos, “Wrist twisting like a stir fry” haha!)

From left to right:

The first is a U pin. I like how tiny this thing is, and it’s very lightweight. I have no idea how the finish will hold after getting wet repeatedly but I bought 12 more so I don’t mind if some get old. This thing holds up other styles than buns too. Got these from Etsy.


The next one is a Lila rose wooden hair stick that I received from a swap. Very light weight.

The blue and green acrylics are a bit heavier than anything else I bought, but they’re so colorful and pretty. They pretty much only stay secured in buns. They will break if dropped on something hard enough. I bought these from Etsy.

The last one is super cute and sparkly. It’s not as heavy as it looks. And I think I’ll save this for the super fancy occasions. I bought this one from amazon.

do headbands count here? I'm trying to get away from the tension of the sock bun and just wear a regular bun. This is how I bun when I'm going to the gym, but it looks sporty. I want to try to dress it up for work. Any headband sites/suggestions?



Preferably stretchy types with grip/teeth so they stay in one place.
