Did anyone have a really easy transition?

I transitioned when I first started my healthy hair journey with the intent of being natural only for a year, and it was a real positive experinece. But I think you are transitioning with ease cause you are blessed with beautiful tresses, regardless of natural and relaxed. More blessings to you!

Thank you!

How did you style your hair when you were natural?

Well, I stretched last year for 6 months with the intent of transitioning and it became difficult for me around 5 and a half months. I got tired of trying to figure out how to style my hair:ohwell:.

I've decided to transition again ( this time my hair is texlaxed) and I think that I will have a much easier time now. I've learned to stop fighting with my hair. During my first transition I was still trying to make it lay down when my hair is just naturally big:perplexed.

:yay:Lauren, so happy your transition is going smoothly, that's wonderful. It's just so nice to hear that someone is having an easy time with transitioning. Like someone said though you got a lot of hair so your new growth is not taking over...yet, lol. I think it's the hardest when the hair is say half and half. Anyway, hope all continues to go well for you:).

:lol:Thanks Hopeful! Honestly, if I can't handle it at half and half, I may have to go back on my word and do a BC. I'm looking forward to a few more inches though, because I love my wavy buns, but I don't have a lot of wave yet.:ohwell:

mine was super easy. i stayed in a rollerset. a scarf to tie down my edges was a godsend. right now i can say that i'm REALLY happy that i decided to transition. i celebrated my year last week. no BC and i have about 3 inches or so left now.

Congratulations on your year! I can't wait to get there.

My transition is starting to get a bit rough, i'm 10 months into my transition with no intention of doing a big chop. Maybe a lot of it has to do with my texture, im 4b. I started my transition with armpit length hair and I'd say the first few months 1-6 were the easiest, i could just put some product to lay it flat and wear a ponytail. I also flat ironed for a while and that really made things easy, but the only problem was that i was constantly fighting my new growth and flatironing too much.. But since I am not using heat until next september, my hair style options are pretty much braids and twists because the texture differences are so extreme, it has really helped elminate a lot of unnecessary rough handling and breakage.
I've been natural 2x's before, once i did the big chop and the other time i transitioned. And when the relaxer is gone from your hair its a real relief because your true natural texture is there and its so much easier to work with

I can imagine. I like the way my newgrowth looks, but I can already tell the relaxed hair is pulling on it, if that makes sense.

I didn't know you were transitioning again! Congrats on your decision. I think I'm still sort of fighting mine, because I still straighten it more than I probably should. I'm feeling my buns right now, though, so that should keep my hand off the flat iron for awhile.

Thanks Lauren! Congrats to you too. I've been doing a lot of twistouts and braidouts. I'll probably try buns soon too:).

Your hair is so pretty though, it obviously works for you

I think my transition will be easy...well relatively. I had been texlaxing for 8-9 mins. every 4-5 mos. My new growth is not that much different from my processed hair and I found a product I love to lay my edges down without looking TOO shiny and not making my hair hard.

When I did it mid May I tried for 5 mins and I was like hmmm...I might be able to "Work this out!" I will say I just texlaxed for 5 mins last week (I had a HUGE event and needed my hair to look TOP notch). I have decided to transition...with out the BC.

Lauren, I'll agree with others...you do have a beautiful head of hair! :)

my transition was easy....
i just kept doing what i had been doing
which was rollersetting and keeping my ends moisturized
it was a breeze!

I think my transition was pretty easy. My natural hair wasn't too much of a stretch from my texturized hair so most folks couldn't tell the difference between the two textures, including myself. I just did a lot of "wash and wear" styles and kept things moving. I periodically trimmed the texturized hair away when the mood struck me. It took about 1 1/2 years before I was totally natural.

Starting out with longer hair can make the transition go smoother. There are more styling options, and the newgrowth doesn't overpower the relaxed hair. My transition was rough because I didn't start out with a whole lot of hair.

So true, but at some point the new growth will overpower the relaxed hair that's a given.

My transition was pretty easy, I didn’t experience any major problems (*knocks on wood*). I basically kept it as simple as possible (i.e. low maintenance/protective styles, low/no heat, co washing, deep conditioning, lots of moisture etc..) pretty much the same thing I’ve been doing all along. :)

Mine is going really well. It almost makes me worry. I expected a lot more trouble, but at 7 months post, it's been fine. I have been wearing buns for a week now, and I get a lot of compliments on them. I can straighten pretty easily when I want to. Detangling is hard, but it's always been hard, so no big change there.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had a pretty easy time of it. Is it going to get rough at some point, or can it actually be easy indefinitely?

Congratulations on it being easy. Also, have you noticed a change in your texture (meaning: Are you still a 4a/b or are you more like a 3b/c/4a)? I always ask this b/c sometimes our hair is actually coarser when we relax. After my coconut oil pre-poo and my wash with non-sulfate shampoo, my hair is so silky, I'm definitely going to stretch as long as I can. I may even go natural like you all??? My curl pattern is looser, b/c there's no gunk messing it up. We will see!

Yep, I have been noticing this for sure. First, I noticed when flat ironing that the straightened newgrowth was actually smoother and silkier than my relaxed/texlaxed hair. After washing and airdrying, I've got some 3C in my crown, and right above my nape, the hair is like, 2C. It's almost bone straight. My edges are 4A/B, and most of the sides are 4A. It's so weird, but fascinating. I'm just wondering how this is going to look when my whole head is natural.:ohwell:

I do believe in scab hair now.

Thanks for all the replies, ladies!

 Hi. Lauren!

So far so good for me too.

I am really not paying that much attention to my hair right now...my roots are SOOOO THICK!!!

And I agree with you about using much more product. I mean I still have the same number of strands, so why does it take more product to saturate my hair?

I am still wearing my bun and I am lovin my waves too :yep:!

And yes, I do understand what you mean when you say the relaxed ends are kinda pulling on the natural roots.

Also, I am glad folx mentioned that handling 100% natural hair is easier than what I'm dealing with now. When I have to detangle I always wonder why it takes so much work and when I detangle my daughters' heads it seems a breeze?

Anyway, glad to hear that it's going good for you! Your hair looks amazing!

ETA: You said that you are drinking ensure for your weight?????? :perplexed

It's been fairly easy because like some others, I "accidentally" transitioned after relaxing for the last time in June 2006. The hardest thing has been trying to accept my new "look" - I only recently wore my "natural" hair completely down for the first time. I'm very conservative by nature so I'm still a little nervous about the curly look, but I am liking it and the feedback has been positive.

Thank you!

How did you style your hair when you were natural?

I was transition and chopping off relaxed ends simultaneously. At first, my sister would braid my hair every 3 weeks. After 4 mths of doing that, I started wearing wigs, with my hair cornrowed underneath. About 3 months into it, I finally BC'd and its been a journey since then. I relaxed after a year of being natural. Maybe if I had long hair like you, I would not have caved in and returned to the relaxer, but I honestly do not reget it.
