What is my problem:ohwell: ? I just can't seem to get it.....I can rollerset, trim, cornroll etc. I am walking around lookin like I don't even have a relaxer. I have inches of underprocessed hair with bone straight ends. The only thing to straighten out my strands is rollersetting or the FI(which I am avoiding heat). I don't want bone straight results, would just like to be able to airdry with a scarf and go. Would you ladies just go to the salon? BTW I used to use Motions which I later found out is not the best, then I switched to Affirm and my hair got a little straighter but not much. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I also cannot self relax. There were sometimes I got it right, and other times parts were under relaxed, etc. It got to be so stressful I just gave up, and just went back to the salon. For me the $75 is for peace of mind, and knowing my hair will be done properly every time.

I can't self relax. The $100.00 I spend every 8 weeks is well worth it. Some things I am willing to pay for. Waxing my eyebrows is other thing I will pay a professional to do.

Amen to that! I have tried the home kit, and pulling of that wax HURTS! I am happy paying someone to do it for me properly. I think it's one of those things you have to try at home, see if you can perfect it, and if not you'll appreciate having someone else do it.

Kinda like oil changes - $30 well spent!

I cant self relax either. My hair looks horrible, I just self relaxed last week. I'm going to wait about a month and go to the beauty shop. I just hate going to the beauty shop because I dont want them to mess up my progress. My stylist will cut all your ends off if u let her.

My stylist is the same way. He will trim your ends every four weeks if you let him and I mean trim, not dust.

It took me 2 years to finally get it because I was determine to get it and not rely on stylist. I actually just self relaxed and now I'm sitting here with porosity control and triple silk on my hair.

It took tips from this forum (ie small tint brushes from Sallys). I think that was honeydew.

I took tips from about 5 people here and used what worked for me.

The only thing I added on my own is the use of 2 timers....one for the front of my head and one for the back.

It also took a few relaxers and touchups to find what worked for me.
Still the pj in me wants to try the Mizani new butter relaxer system.

I think i'm headed down that road myself. I pretty much suck at self relaxing but a lot of salons suck at it too. I think I found a good one (salon) that I may try in September so we'll see.

SelfStyled, if you are willing to try and self relax again, LondonDiva has a great tutorial in her fotki.:)

I can only relax my own hair when it is really short...but now since my hair is in the begining shoulder length stages...u can forget it.

i can...but not safely, so i leave it up to a professional. once i get to the back of my head where i can't see, i start getting relaxer on parts of my hair that are already processed, and then i end up with breakage.

I do it, but I am horrible at it! SelfStyled, I am like you, with underprocessed hair and straight ends. I can say that the ORS Relaxer has helped me a lot but it's still a mess :cry3:

I can't self relax either, but I really want to learn. I've done it once, and I can still see the underprocessed part of my hair.

I tried and tried to master self-relaxing. I tried to implement the tips that I read and my hair still didn't come out like I wanted. In the process, I caused damage and messed up my progress.

Ladies, I wanted to thank you all so much for your replies:) . I got caught up picking up some relatives up from the airport yesterday and could not get back to the computer until just now. At least I am in good company. Sounds like some have resorted to going back to the salon, while others have learned to perfect their technique. I can relate to NOT wanting to go back to the salons, but for the health of my hair I probably will have to go back. I guess I 'll have to be really firm about what I want(not bone straight) and what I don't want (trims with EVERY touch up).

Anky you har is beautiful! Do you find your rollersets helpful in straightening out the undeprocessed parts?

I'm with you. I have tried for years and think I'm only making things worse or at least slowing the growth process by doing it incorrectly. I relaxed 7/6 and it looks like I could use another already. The problem is that I can't tell if it the sweating thats ruining my perm job or if its my relaxing process itself that I'm screwing up:ohwell: I think I'll bite the bullet and drop the bucks next time.

Do you mean you sweat when you're applying and you think that could be messing up the application? Or do you mean that you think you're sweating the perm out just cause its summer and all? I'm about 3 weeks post and definitely my hair is looking sorry. I think I will do my own HYH Challenge until I can get to the salon. If anything lets use our visits to the salon as mini tutorials, for me to see something is to really learn it. Best believe I will be all up in that mirror studying and learning.

I have never tried too and won't unless my current stylist retires or dies. He's awesome with relaxers. I only trust him to do my relaxers. God Bless those that can do it safely and with good/great results.

I mastered henna/indigo/cassia but won't mess with the chemicals!

Girl, this thread had my name written all over it. After a year of being natural, a stylist underprocessed me. Then I started self-relaxing, and kept texlaxing it. Then I went back to the stylists, and after three relaxers, same result, I AM GOING BACK TO SELF RELAXING. I can do bad by myself. And in the process, I can sharpen my skills. In the meantime, I have been reading and jotting notes in my fotki, for my next relaxer.
I refuse to pay a stylist to come near my tresses.

I NOW know I can't...I'm either over-processing or under-processing...I relaxed friday and I'm noticing that I seriously under-processed sections of my hair its a mess y'all...I'm so upset :(right now I don't even want to post my pictures for my starting point...I need info about a corrective in the future or should I just roll with it?

nope, everytime I did it myself, it was half overprocessed and half underprocess or just broke off altogether..lol. So I will not try anymore.
i go to the salon for my touchups

I'm 8 weeks post, and I've got to decide soon. Although I've had some rough visits with the burning and the edges eaten off, I don't want to destroy my progress with a self-relaxing disaster. I'm sitting on the fence.

I havent self-relaxed in years. Im too afraid of ruining any progress. I'll just go ahead and pay $60.00 every 8 wks for a relaxer.:ohwell:

I have been self relaxing now for about a year. I still have not gotten better at it. This last time in Dec. was really bad. I immediately start burning and had to rinse prematurely. I was very upset and have decided that I have to go with mild for now on not regular. My hair was severly underprocessed. I like the texlaxed look but this was not not even close. I am going to keep at, since it hasn't hindered my progress. I will probably have it professionally done at one point this summer just so that I can see my true length.

I also tried the self relaxing thing and while one section got somewhat relaxed, the front is no where near relaxed; not even texlaxed. I just did it two weeks ago. I mean people don't even think I got a perm and I was 11 weeks post when I did it!! :wallbash: It's a mess yall.:nono: But I decided I'm going to wait it out. So I did a rollerset that hid some of the new growth, and am planning to go to the dominicans and get a blow out. After that I think i'll get braids and keep them in until the next schedule perm. :perplexed I'm still debating if I should try again, or just have my mother do it.
