The year is coming to a close. Here's the Year in Review Thread
  • What did you learn about your hair this year? What worked and what didn't?
  • What was your biggest improvement with your hair? Any setbacks?

Lets make 2017 another great year for our hair!
 
2016 was the year that I finally stopped following rules and popular opinion. My focus was more on doing what works for ny hair. Thats about as simple as I can state it.

I minimized my PJ habits and opted to buy sample sizes whenever possible.

I did see great improvement with my edges. My crown, however is still so-so with the alopecia.

My greatest accomplishment was that of no longer stressing over what I wish my hair should be; Hair Contentment. Not worrying about legnth; focusing on retention. This year I truly enjoyed my hair.

My biggest setback this year was thinking that one time of heat would be harmless. My hair cannot take it and now im paying the price. Sometimes i feel like doing a BC but i doubt i will follow thru. Had I not done press out on my perimeter, my hair would have been doing superb overall.

My goal for 2017 is to continue weekly DC and shampoo and regular protein treatments. Narrow my products to products that work for me. Eat a better diet and exercise to accompany my hair care regimen. And as I post this thread, I realize I want to see how much hair I can grow and retain for 2017. I want to beat my Alopecia!!!!!!

And incorporate hot oil treatments in my regimen.

I learned that my scalp prefers to be washed weekly...healthy scalp healthy hair. Also as much as I love blowdrying my hair, my hair responds better with minimum to no heat.

My biggest improvement was learning to be open to try new products and methods. I found my HG conditioner, leave in and refresher sprays. Another big improvement is to learning/controlling stress which has lead into setback.

Products that I will keep or will continue to buy QB AOHC and BRBC, Camille Rose Fresh curls and moisture milk, APB leave in, Cupuacu Avocado daily moisturizer, simple hair creme, daily refresher. Mielle organics babassu oil and mint conditioner. I don't have products/companies to dump but will not go out my way to purchase unless they have a great sale.

Main goal is to continue thickening my crown. I have about 10" that is thick and about 6" of thin ends at the crown. I don't necessarily have a length goal but I would like to make mbl.

Another goal is to try and continue taking vitamins (not HSN but general vitamins) since I have a bad habit of just stopping cold turkey.

I learned I need to keep it simple.

My biggest improvement about my hair is the knowledge I gained so I don't feel like I have to try everything... now it's just breaking the habit of trying everything :lol: Shampooing with quality shampoo works, others don't, and consistency definitely works.

Had a setback this year but it's because I got off of my very simple regimen I established in the Nail Your Regimen thread by @faithVA many moons ago so I'm going back to that

Plans for next year is consistency. Very simple. My hair does well with that. I noticed most of the ladies here and on other mediums who have healthy hair benefit from keeping it simple and consistency.
 
I realise that healthy habits (eating and exercising) are just as important as any topical products I may use.
In 2017, I want to fully maximise my hair growth and retention (by keeping my hair in braids that I will re-do one at a time) and putting in place a solid routine for the aforementioned health habits.

I am fortunate to have a good growth rate already, so I am excited to see what my hair can to when conditions are fully optimised.
I'd like to reach full and thick APL by the end of 2017 (at SL now, but I imagine I will be trimming a lot of thin ends off)
 
  • What did you learn about your hair this year? What worked and what didn't? My hair prefers clay washes over any other shampoo/cleanser. I like clay washing, but it seems to strip my color rather fast so either I accept these grays or dye every two weeks (semi-perm). Keeping my hair stretched! Twistouts and braidouts are taking a backseat in 2017.

  • What was your biggest improvement with your hair? Any setbacks? I gained alot of thickness this year (supplements are working). No real set backs, but I had a 2 inch trim in September that was badly needed.

  • What products will you continue using? Which will you dump? I'm a recovering PJ so 2017 is the year I get through my stash of randoms and stick to products I know work well. I shan't be seduced by good sales. Amen.

  • What are your hair plans/goals for next year? Work through my stash. Full whip length hair.
 
  • My scalp is far more finicky than my hair.
  • Anything that increases blood flow to my scalp accelerates the growth rate. The shedding is killing me, but I pray to Yah I am close to a solution.
  • I will be trying various things to slow the greys.
  • I think I found a braider so I can get my hair out of the way under headwraps and snoods
  • Seeing gel as protection as I wear my hair out instead of styling.
  • Testing more oils for washes.
  • Shooting for BSL by the end of 2017 (yeah, I am crazy).
  • Keep have fun with my hair!

  • I learned that I NEED to keep breakage in check !!!!

What was your biggest improvement with your hair? Any setbacks?
  • I actually BCd because I got concerned that my hair was not "growing". I was hovering bout an inch above APL for YEARS !!!
However upon BCing I realized that my hair definitely does grow ... a little over 0.5inch per month.
Obviously whatever I was doing to my hair was hindering retention.​

What products will you continue using? Which will you dump?
  • I will continue using mostly Max Hydration Method recommended products for low porosity hair. I dont do the baking soda rinse etc. But the yogurt DC and sodium bentonite clay have been doing my hair very very well.
  • The other products I use are Crece Pelo conditioner and shampoo, Kinky Kurly Knot today LI and gel, flax seed gel and ecostyler gel (occasionally), glycerine
What are your hair plans/goals for next year?
  • So 2017 will be the year of retention !!!
That means​
  • trimming when necessary
  • improving moisture
  • eating healthily
  • taking my vitamins
  • keeping up with and or adapting my regimen as my hair gets longer (I found that as my hair got longer I slacked off more on my regimen)

What did I learn about my hair this year?
I learned that my scalp requires frequent shampoos (1-2x weekly) and exfoliation, my hair can handle silicones , and that aloe isn't the devil for my low porosity hair (but petrolatum and mineral oil is indeed the devil).

Biggest improvement?
I saw great growth this year and didn't have any setbacks.

What products will I continue using? What will I dump?
Shampoo: keep Ion Hard Water (plus the AHAs I add to it). Dump Neutrogena T-Sal.

Deep Conditioner: keep my DC mix of Vo5 Pomegranate Bliss and oils, and keep Colorful Neutral Protein Filler. dump GVP Conditioning Balm.

Leave in: keep aloe vera juice and Aussie Moist. Nothing to dump.

Stylers: keep Wetline Xtreme and ITDF Marshmallow Moisture Balm. Dump ecostyler gel.


Hair goals and plans for next year?
  • Continue using my holy grail products
  • Stick to my regimen
  • Try curlformer sets
  • Exercise at least 4 times a week.
  • Reach waist length by end of 2017

- I learned that my hair HATES completely air drying. I let my hair air dry for awhile but I have to blow it out with cool air with my blow dryer. I also learned that I have High Porosity hair. I also can't use any hard protein treatment my hair will get REALLY dry if I do. I just started my hair journey. :)

Improvements/Set Backs
- Well, like I said I just started a hair journey. The back/nape of my hair broke off because of negligence!

1. Keep it simple and consistent.
This has always been a challenge because I'm lazy and a PJ so I tend to either get caught up doing waaay too much experimantation or nothing at all. I've known for a while what my hair likes, I just need to stick to it.

2. Take care of yourself.
I went through some things this year and let them get to me abandoning my healthy eating, exercise and supplementation. I definitely saw the difference in my hair.

3. Invest in good basics.
Crazy to think that having been a member here for so long and never invested in seamless combs, or a high quality sleep bonnet. I would go mad trying all kinda new cheap crap. Not that cheap can't be good, but usually not as good. Its these little things that make a marked difference over time.

My goals for 2017? These 3 things.
 
This year I learned that my hair prefers silicone leave-ins over oils and butters. – Unfortunately I didn’t learn that until late into the year, but I’m optimistic about 2017!

My biggest improvement is how easy it is to detangle now. I found Shea Moisture High porosity products this year and they have been awesome for my hair. The final key for me was using CHI products as my leave-in.

I know for sure I will continue with Shea Moisture’s High Porosity line and the Manuka Honey Masque, CHI Keratin Leave-In, CHI Total Protect Leave-in, and CHI Silk Infusion.

My plain for next year is to keep with bi-weekly twisting & washes.

I’m hopeful for 2017 and plan to make WL by December 2017!!!
 
This year I learned so many important things. It's the first time ever I've had good results since taking out my locks three years ago.

Things I learned in 2016:
Vinegar works best as a cleanser for me. No shampoo or conditioner on the shelf will ever touch my head again.
Glycerin is the best moisturizer in the entire world for my low-po hair.
Eggs (B-vitamins) make my hair grow faster.
My diet is the most important thing needed for growth and the health of my hair. Not products.

My biggest improvement: I actually figured out how to moisturize this year. Before this I was accustomed to hair that felt like steel wool. Now it feels like real wool :) It's really soft. I'm so so happy and thankful to God. The drought is over on this head :cloud9:

I'll continue using vinegar/coffee as a cleanser and my 50% water/50% glycerin mix as a leave-in. That is all.

Next year I want to figure out how often to wash or how to keep my scalp clean without re-twisting more than once a month. Dirty scalp tends to make me shed more than usual, but re-twisting weekly or even bi-weekly isn't an option. It takes a full day for me :rolleyes:

Grow an inch a month :D (don't laugh ya'll). And grow strands as thick as possible with good nutrition.

Be able to put my twists in a bun.

Decrease my breakage by 100% when re-twisting by not being nit-picky about shed hairs and being gentle/using proper handling.
 
I learned that you can't be lazy and neglect your hair for days!

I also learned that most gels have protein in them and can cause protein build up on top of using other products that have protein.

My plans for 2017 is to just do better and not be lazy.
I plan to use a stylist for my touchups
And I plan to go back to using strictly liquid leave-ins. Creams weight my hair down and cause build up faster.
 
This is a great thread and one I really need at the moment to give me pause and make me reflect on what's truly important to my healthy hair journey.

One of the things I find important for me moving into 2017 is to pull back the reigns on the amount of DIFFERENT brands of products that I have started using in 2016. I like quite a few of them, actually all of them, but I know I will need to cut back considerably to get a perfect grip on what are truly working on my hair and what are not. There are some holy grail status products in there that I know I will continue to replenish.

I have not used enough protein on my hair in 2016 and thankfully I haven't lost my hair as a result but I know I cannot continue to use so little protein on my hair. My hair thrives on and loves protein so I will increase those treatments a bit in 2017. I have neglected my exercise routines in 2016, I will not in 2017. Cleansing and Deep conditioning at least once a week is essential for my speedy hair growth so I will take those into 2017. I also need to return to regular henna treatments to color my hair. My hair really thrived with those.

I totally agree about washing and dc'ing weekly being essential for speeding hair growth!
We need to have a clean scalp and remove product for our hair to thrive. The key is to finding the right shampoos and conditioners to do so.

I need shampoo with SLS or my scalp acts a fool. My hair needs a weekly mask, regular conditioner, even deep conditioners are not moisturizing enough. I need to wash my hair every week instead of every other week. Also, my hair needs to be 90% dry before adding leave-in products. If I add leave-in products when my hair is still wet or damp the product evaporates off of my hair with the water.

Improvements/Set Backs
My curls/wavy clump now and my hair no longer tangles because of the weekly mask.

Hair Plans/Goals for 2017
I'm going to switch from hairties to u-shaped hair forks. I want to see what my hair does without having any pressure points. I'm thinking of adding a midweek co-wash, I haven't decided yet. I'm also hoping that my natural hair will be shoulder length by December 2017.
 
You know what else I learned this year? Just because sections of your hair are doing well doesn't give you an excuse to ignore them to concentrate on other areas. Doing that is a setup for setbacks. Just because an area is always thick and healthy doesn't mean you should neglect it to better other areas... concentrate on the whole head. That's not what caused my setback but I've seen that sentiment throughout a lot of threads on here and I'll take it with me.

  • What did you learn about your hair this year?
  1. I came across a photo of a model I admired when I was a little girl. She had super long hair that was extremely thick and full. I was shocked to realize that my hair was longer and just as thick.
  2. I learned that my hair texture is changing, right on schedule, but I was not prepared. It changes from fine to coarse and back again every 6 to 7 years.
  3. I came to the realization that I have been taking my hair for granted and that I have not been appreciating it. (See point #1).
  4. Store bought conditioners, by themselves, do not work for me.
  5. My hair loves to be deep conditioned with heat, under a hair dryer.
  6. I learned that I can use Shea Butter. But I must whip it with an electric wired egg beater type mixer (No stick blenders , drink blenders or hand mixing. All leave it grainy and un-usable.)
  7. I hate how my hair looks flat-ironed. My hair looks so much better when it is pressed with a hot comb.
  • What worked? My old school processes:
  1. Infusium added to my spray bottle along with my regular stuff.
  2. Doing protective styles.
  3. Doing a whole head baggy at night.
  4. Wetting my hair and oiling and buttering/greasing the entire strand from root to the very ends in small sections.
  5. For my hair, there is no "maintain" process. I am in either retaining length or experiencing breakage. If I stop my processes and ignore my hair, MY HAIR length and health go away!
  6. I make a coconut milk conditioner and it makes my hair magnificent looking.
  7. My hair likes "greasy" conditioners with tons of added honey and natural oil.
  8. My scalp responds well when I oil it with a natural oil and a few drops of essential oil before my wash.

  • What didn't work?
  1. My single braid/ponytail is too drying for my coarser textured hair. I had to go back to multi-braids.
  2. Loosened ponytails are pretty but they give me massive tangles every time.
  • What was your biggest improvement with your hair?
  1. My hair dropped down and gained about two inches of length. I just noticed it last month. I'm at 22 inches in the front and about 21 inches in the back.
  2. My coarse, wiry hair is so tamed and happy. It is no longer unruly immediately after washing. It is soft and silky.
  • Any setbacks? Yes!
  1. This year, for the first time ever, somehow, my single braid turned in on itself and created a knot that was an inch in diameter. I lost about 2 to 3 inches on the right, lower back side of my hair.
  2. I ruined my hair myself in 2012 with a crooked, butchered, self trim. I cut back 2/3 of my length. I will never do that again. I mention it here as I have still not yet gained back the healthy length I had before.
  • What products will you continue using?
  1. I found a creamy, baby wash. I will continue to wash my hair with that.
  2. I mix Kayro syrup with my baby wash to clarify my hair. It leaves my hair softer than cotton and silk on a corn cob.
  3. I will continue to mix up my coconut milk conditioner.
  4. Scurl is a staple for me.
  • Which will you dump?
  1. I absolutely love the Cantu Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque but here in France it costs between 9 and 12 Euros. For a 12 ounce jar, that is 1 dollar/euro per ounce.That's ridiculous. It goes.
  2. I can only use Vaseline brand petroleum jelly to coat my hair when baggying. Other brands of petroleum jelly leave my hair hard. Dumping non name brand petroleum jelly products.

  1. For years, my goal was to grow and retain my hair, thick and full, to the small of my back. I think people here call that whip length.
  2. In 2017, my plan is to grow my hair so that it touches and lays on the top of my behind. It would need to be at least 26 inches in length to do that.
  3. GOAL: I'm going for 26 to 30 inches in total hair length by Dec 31st, 2017! Wish me luck!

My scalp is very sensitive to products and must be cleansed at least once a week.
That my hair thrives on a very simple regimen.
My hair doesn't need protein
My hair needs as much moisture as it can get.
I don't need combs at all.
My hair hates coconut oil
My hair loves natural products.
Shea butter is my best friend.
I don't need a conditioner and I don't need to co-wash

Biggest improvement?
I have finally established a solid regimen that I believe will help me reach my health and length goals.

What products will I continue using? What will I dump?
I have dumped every product that I had that had protein in it and every other product with chemicals in it.

  • Absolutely won't work/ Intolerable-Waiting longer than 1 week to wash my hair

  • Setbacks - Had to cut off 3 inches after a horrible braiding experience

I learned that my natural is even lower porosity.
Oil is not useful for sealing my hair as butter is better.
Shampoo is my friend.
Aloe, Coconut, and Avocado are still not my friends. Shea is a frenemy.

Despite big chopping and mini-trim, retention.
Found a few pieces in my crown that were a bit broken, which showed me that my hair doesn't need a lot of deep conditioning but it still needs to be loved.
Steaming is not beneficial for me.

APB, Darcy's, Bee Mine, Naturelle Grow, Shea Moisture. Im trying to stick with staples.

To reach WL.

How tall are you and where does your 22 inches of hair lay? Im 4'10 and my hair is 21-22 inches. It is between MBL (18 inches) and WSL (about 23-24 inches). My goal is 29 inches which I think should be tailbone length on me. Im just wondering bc you are one of my hair idols

How were you able to thicken your hair?
 
My hair is almost the exact opposite. It still needs some moisture, but not much or it causes breakage and gummy strands. It needs as much protein internally and topically as possible, I think due to me being vegetarian. I need to get better at incorporating protein into my diet.

  • What did you learn about your hair this year? What worked and what didn't?
  • Even if you think you don't want to be natural or a loose natural anymore because of how much work it is....you're gonna miss it. Protective styling and moisture/protein balance are the key.
  • What was your biggest improvement with your hair? Any setbacks?
  • Biggest improvement would be my ends after big chopping! Setback would be going from dreads to natural to perm to natural all in the first year I've taken care of my own hair...:look:
  • What products will you continue using? Which will you dump?
  • Aphogee provitamin leave in, Shea butter, coconut oil, Shea moisture castor oil leave in and shampoo. Dumping wax based edge controls and hair dye/bleach/rinses.
  • What are your hair plans/goals for next year?
  • Retain as much length as possible while keeping my ends nice and healthy.
  • Anything else....
  • I gotta stop getting bored with my hair and experimenting all the time...wigs help with that urge though:lachen:
