Anyone make their own conditioner. ..

Also if anyone is making their own conditioners/hair products please be careful with citric acid. My conditioners were in the 2.0 pH range when I used a tiny amount citric acid had I kept using it over time my hair might have fallen out and the conditioner had no slip! Without the citric acid the pH of my conditioner is 5.0 (water + BTMS/cetyl alcohol) so citric acid isn't really needed unless you want to make the pH 4 for some odd reason (5 is fine for a conditioner) and make sure you get a pH tester if you're going to be using citric acid in any type of formulation. My hair gets awesome slip now that I've stopped using citric acid

*taking notes*

I'm really considering making my own conditioner. Overtime it would be more cost effective and I'd get all the ingredients I like.

Oh I forgot I finally tried a recipe it's still currently sitting in my hair but I plan to wash out today will take down notes when I do. I can say though I need something in it to help with slip I think it wasn't super slippery going on but my shed hairs were very soft upon rinsing out the conditioner.
I'm kinda nervous though because I have had this conditioner in my hair since Friday eek I haven't had time to rinse.

My formulation for my conditioner. I also add .1 ounces of Pro vitamin B-5 and .3 ounces of hydrolyzed wheat protein (not listed in the photo).

I totally kept forgetting about my recipe. OK so the first trial was inconclusive because I left the conditioner in too long and had to reward my hair.
So trial 2 was last weekend. I whipped the conditioner up without preservative since I was using the same night.
I also wanted to use the most basic recipe to see my hairs response.
OK so I used
80.4% water (I'd like to infuse the water next time but didn't have time on Sunday)
1.6% silk aa(not sure if I really felt a difference)
8% btms(I think this was too much, next time need less btms and to put a thickener)
10% oils(again I think I was a tad too much; 3% jbco, 7% evoo)
Also put a few sprinkles of vitamin c to bring the pH of the conditioner down to about 4

I used the conditioner in the steps of mhm while on my hair felt very maybe bulky is the word it didn't feel dry nor oily. After rinsing hair felt fluffy like a cloud lol I think my hair would have felt awesome but I think the clay step where I added activated charcoal into the clay to give the clay more bulk stiffened my hair. I could feel the clay was doing something strange as I was putting it on.
However a cowash with my conditioner watered down make it nice and soft again. My hair was super curly and very soft I brushed it out and twisted it up its still twisted but I untwisted a piece yesterday for an unrelated matter and my hair had more life than I've seen in a while. But it still has a bit of that stiffness now that's it's dried.
So no raves yet but this was a good first recipe. I have some vit b5 but I didn't put it this time. Next time I would like to use marshmallow root and maybe flax seed in the conditioner to add mature slip before I go and purchase a slip additive.

I think you need to lower the amount of BTMS used in relation to the oils amount used. To my understanding your BTMS amount should be about 1/4 of your total oil amount. So, for my conditioner, I used 1.1 ounce of BTMS to 4 ounces of oil.

Thank you! Do you remember where you got that info? I know on the usage charts they day btms should be in 4-8 % concentration so I thought more=better lol ill be making more Saturday but my cetyl alcohol won't be here yet so I'll try it will about 8% oil, 2% btms, 2% SAA, 4% panthenol (maybe) and then distilled water to 100. And I have been making the conditioner a 100-150 grams so it's single use size that way there's no waste if i didnt like it yay!

Also, angel eyez does your conditioner have a smell before you put fragrance if you put fragrance? Mine smells but not in a bad way but has a scent. Also, do you know your hairs porosity and are you natural? Thank yooouu!

Learned from the Swift Crafty Monkey Blog, and by googling BTMS conditioner recipes, lol. Mostly from SCM, though. My conditioner usually has a very neutral smell. If I use coconut oil, it will have a faint coconut scent. I think I have normal porosity (hair floats), and I'm natural. Here's a link to my Pinterest DYI Beauty recipe board. Has conditioner, lotion, & oil infusion recipes:

Thank you. Yes I adapted Mt recipe from scm she seems really knowledgeable and I like the that she tries to recreate different products. Maybe mine smells funny because I use too much btms lol heading to your pinterest now

No, but my sister has used it with good results. I do plan to mix some up, just haven't gotten around to getting the ingredients.

Tried out a new formulation, since I got my BTMS-50 yesterday. Came out thick and creamy. My daughter and I are marinating in it at this very moment, lol. Nice to use it right after mixing it up, because it's still warm...

Here's a revamped conditioner formulation for anyone who wants to try it out. It has a higher oil percentage. I really liked this one when i mixed it up this morning. I used rice bran oil, Shea oil, hemp seed oil, and some red palm butter. the consistency is very thick and creamy, with lots of glide. Made detangling with it very easy. I DC'd with it and my hair is well moisturized and very soft.
