The Denman: Love it or Leave it?

I rarely ever use my denman. Almost never. I've likely used it 3 times since I've purchased it 4 years ago. I was reading Curly Nikki and she said she felt like the denman shredded her ends. I am experimenting with more stretched styles so I'm a little nervous about continuing to use it. I notice a number of shed hairs but can't really gauge how "normal" it is since I usually only use my fingers to style.

What are your thoughts? What has been your experience?

I ordered a bamboo brush to compare the two but won't get it until tomorrow.

It gives great curl definition, I like it for that but I get so much shrinkage when I use it and I feel like I also get more ssk's.

I rarely used my denman but when I did I didn't have any issues. My mom has now taken it over. It's her new straight hair brush.

I only use it if I haven't detangled in a while after my twist outs and before I go to a salon. I don't trust them to detangle my hair without ripping it.

The best advice I've ever gotten about a Denman is that you shouldn't use it unless your hair is strong enough to handle it....and in my opinion most people's hair isn't.

Still love it. As my hair has gotten longer I've found that I can't use it as my only detangling tool. I have to use first a wide tooth comb and then the Denman. It does a great job at getting rid of all the shed hairs and I love how it defines my hair. My main use if to distribute leave in/gel when doing my wash n gos. It has dramatically decreased the time it takes me to achieve a wash and go (10/15 minutes as opposed to half hour it did prior to it).

I like this brush a lot but I do not use it every single day. More like once a week. I detangle first with a comb and then follow with the denman. No matter how gentle u are it will pull out unnecessary hair if ur strands aren't somewhat alighned

And this is what I was thinking. As is, I can only use the denman once my hair is already detangled to brush out the curls (creating a faux blow out). But I think you're right. It isn't for fine haired ladies. I am going to see if this bamboo joint will work better. I have fine hair and I'm sensitive about my sh*t! cc: E. Badu.

I was using the knock off denman modified, but Im going to only use it on fake hair from now on. I thought I was being gentle but i guess this brush is not for me.

I recently found a small patch of hair close to the front that might be breakage. I really dont remember seeing this before. Its so small that its almost impossible to tell, but I dont like it.

I modified mine and use it only about once a month after detangling with wide tooth then fine tooth combs on hair full of conditioner. It's great for shed hairs.

I'd BURN it. It gave me every single type of split ends.

OH NO! I really hope this new brush is a lot more gentle. I'm loving this twist out on faux blow out hair. I need a gentle way to get that look! I'm retiring this denman though!

I can't say that I love it. I like it. However, I only use it to smooth my hair when I'm putting it into a puff or ponytail. I rarely use it on the entire length of my hair.

I think it's great for detangling. Nothing detangles my hair as well. I try not to use it too often because in a way I do believe it can damage your ends and your hair overall.

no thanks. Too rough for my hair. I've had mine since 2006 and can count on one hand how many times I have used it.

I am not a big fan of brushes though because I believe they are too damaging to the hair.

I only use it for curl definition on already de tangled hair. I'd never use it as my de tangling tool.

I love my Denman brush but I use it after detangling with my K-cutter comb. I'm the type who love to comb my hair from the roots to the ends. I'll use a rat teeth comb if I'm desperate.

To add perspective, I was looking for a brush that I could use on a curl former set to give me a blown out look w/o using heat. This blown out look was a base for a twist out style. I have fine 3c/4a hair so I wanted something that would be gentle on my strands.

I have a denman, modified it and at first I loved it, but then I noticed splits and mid shaft splits.

The Denman has been retired. I finger detangle or I use my seamless comb if I really need to. Brushes cause too my breakage for me. My hair is fine medium density.

Leave it! Unless you want to rip out your hair. I prefer finger detangling or my wide tooth seamless comb. Btw, I'm 4a/b with fine strands. The denman might work for other hair types though.

I finger detangle and style 99% of the time. But I also live in wash and go's. This blowout look is new and might be a winter staple.
