Offensive Hair Cuttery ad?

The fact that it says in order to look smart you have to have straight hair. Then as a graphic they use a black child.

Smart is referring to the deal, or package. Common business reference used in regards to saving money.

Could also be back to school. She has nice hair.

Depends on the package their hustling? If its for relaxers then are they saying the only way to look "smart" "sharp" or "done up" is with a relaxer then yes, rude and side eye.

If its for random hair products then my inner pj wants to know what the deals are and if there's some bogo on stuff I like o_o

Im not from America but whenever I saw a Hair Cuttery establishment I just assumed it was just for "cutting styles" like it you wanted a really chic hair cut didn't know they were full service (ie: chemicals like perm, relaxers colour)

what does the straighten up service entail ?

I get the offense but I don't patron them anyway. It's as simple as me keeping my wallet closed since I tend to spend to much money in the mall anyway. No temptation to walk into a store when I don't like what I see in the window.

It's for back to school. Trust me, the advertising for back to school starts in July. I have ads for school uniforms, sweaters and jackets, lunchboxes and bookbags.

Not offended. And the straighten up can be for a flat iron too (not just relaxer). I've taken my girls there for pictures and special occasions (they are natural 3bc and 4a) to get a flat iron and they did a very good job.

The issue isn't that it's for back to school. The issue (for me) is using the word "smart" in connection with a hair straightening process (be it flat iron, perm, whatever) and then having the graphic of a young black girl. I feel like it is a subliminal conforming/white washing message. If you want to look smart then straighten that nappy hair little black girl.

They didn't straighten the black chick's hair. They cut it...just like they did the white chick. They CUT hair. It's an ad for The Hair Cuttery.

The hair cuttery is a FULL service salon. They don't jut CUT hair. They offer relaxers and keratin treatments also. And you don't have to get your hair cut with every treatment/service you get there.

Look smart means look stylish, look fresh and you can look smart with natural hair. Honestly though, that's not their clientele so I am not surprised that they didn't feature a young girl with a natural style. I wouldn't take my girls to the hair cuttery (in my town) for a natural style. They will cut your hair while curly/kinky but if you want a cute natural style, that's not where we go.
