Oh... no, I had about two MAYBE 2 and a half inches of straight hair

I think it was heat damage from when I went to the Dominicans back in 2012...I saw it in the sides, when the humidity took over, the rest of my hair was puffy and sticking up-but those lil pieces were stringy and limp, and right in the front side... my back was only in need of a light dusting. She made my hair almost even, my hair was in layers, my shortest hair was in the front, was shoulder length, the back was bsl... now it's all at the shoulder... if I pull, it's BARELY Grazing close to apl... ugh!

I live in humid South Florida and I'm able to get defined twistouts, but I avoid glycerin-based products, and I use a little bit of gel (Ecostyler is my face) for hold.

sunshinebeautiful I'm in humidity central in Florida as well. Details please! What are all the products you use for a defined twist out, besides Ecostyler (and how long does it last?) The glycerin in ecostyler doesn't affect you?

I'm learning to roll with humidity. I like to use a cream and then a pomade to twists. So I have a hold, my hair is moisturized, and the swelling due to humidity doesn't totally kill my twist out definition.

I need to Google the Jennifer Aniston stuff available in sephora... I did some history searching on Sabino and a few years back the ladies here were RAVING about it... I don't see or hear much about it anymore lately. Things have changed in this group from when I first joined.

Anyways... I was just in the mirror looking at my hair... there was no reason for her to chop off sooooo much hair. I really WAS proud of my bra strap length hair... now I'm just barely shoulder length... looks like I'll be finishing this year in wigs AGAIN after all... Smh... I mean, 3 YEARS and this is all I have to show for it. I've been eating all weekend... so depressed...all my long hair & patience down the drain.

have you tried a foam wrap or gels for hold? also, do you style on wet hair? when i style on wet hair and let it dry completely underneath a dryer, my style lasts much longer.

I just researched this line, No Frizz and I'm wowed! I'm gonna purchase the travel kit to get a trial run of the product for when I blow out my hair.

their video on PVP vs. their molecule is just what I needed to see because I bought Murrays Loc and Lock to do a twistout BECAUSE it has PVP and sure enough my hair looked great and shiny ONE day. Now, even though I still have definition, my hair looks VERY dull and dry and another product is going into my product graveyard!

Im not sure if someone already mentioned this but I've found avoiding glycerine in leave in products helps a lot. Also I use heavy oil year round and I get the most stretch from this and it lasts longer.

I can't answer your question about shine, my hair is always dull, but I'm a 4a/b whose edges lay down pretty nicely. I thoroughly wet them with conditioner and water, making a thick cream in my hand, and then I tie my scarf as tight as I can stand for about 10 min. Then I loosen it a little and let it finish drying. If I'm being fancy, I'll use a little Aveda pomade, but I've started to notice that it does something (negative) to my lil waveys, so I might just use a serum until I start making my own stuff.

I gave up on slick edges. I also don't use gels. For some odd reason it makes my hair look like plastic.
Water and conditioner are god sends. Glycerin is the devil.

I used to go hard for Hick's but the last 3-4 months, my edges just takes it in and spits it out. Almost like kicking butt and taking names. lol Haven't tried any of the others you mentioned.

Now I use just a tiny amount of Kinky Curly Custard. I find it's better to always prep at night and tie it down with a scarf.

What's the loco + scarf method? Is that the LOC method? Iono if my edges are dry...they seem to be just average, but I'll be sure to ensure I put more attention on that part when I moisturize.

I DO wonder too, if hair type makes a difference on how slick my edges will ever be... also the hair in my crown & sides always looks fuzzy... I just want pretty, shiny hair... the weekend is the only time I can play around with my hair, but when THAT'S shaky because the kids have cheerleading, soccer & basketball practices... **le sigh**

OP, press'n curl works better for maintaining straightened natural hair over ceramic iron. But you go with the grease.

This is what I do: After showering my hair, I apply a sopping amount of VO5 conditioner to the hair, the only other thing I do is add an oil on top of it when I twist each section. Nothing else added. The key is to do the hair when it is very wet so that it has a good set. The other thing is add moisturing conditioners with a little oil ie.e Vatika oil. No humectants. I use a Denman on each secton of hair....then twist.

I have forund this to be different for my hair. Press and curl actually dried my hair. While the ceramic truly straightened it. I would only pin curl my hair and I get very beautiful waves of hair. I'm not into "set looking curls" but a natural fall of waves. I don't go with grease because of the fried chicken affect. lol!

is your hair blown out straight in this bun or is it curly and in it's natural state?

i get my edges to lie down when straight by doing 4 things:

sparingly apply hair grease just to the edges -- yes, hair grease. i use africa's best castor oil grease. grease repels water.

flat iron with my Edge Stick

apply a small amount of Edge Control

tie down with a scarf

When curly i get my edges to lie down by ----

wetting them - cup water in my hands from the sink or rinse my hair in the shower

apply Chicoro's edge recipe ---- aloe gel, a tiny amount of guar gum to thicken the mixture and Hot Six oil (any oil wll do, but Hot 6 Oil has a vitamin E and that keeps the mix from spoiling without refrigerating. if you use a pure oil you need to keep the mix in the fridge.)

tie down with a scarf

add a dab of EcoStyler pink if the edges are still a little bouncy

I also find that, the better the condition of your hair, the more apt the edges and the rest of your hair are to cooperate. when my hair needs to be cleaned and conditioned, it won't cooperate.

They actually last as long as yours. What I like to do though is at night, I put it in a comfortable semi high bun. I do not use rollers to keep a set. The result is a feminine fall of waves the next day. Big waves not small ones. My hair is touching waist length so with the waves it hits bottom of brastrap. When the wind blows, it moves naturally. If in a ponytail, then the ponytail has body. The waves are stubborn...but that's my hair.

A lot of products have glycerin in it, but at least for me, if it's far enough down in the ingredient list, you don't get the poof effect. I don't use ANY products that have glycerin as one of the first ingredients.

Usually, after I wash and condition, I usually use Paul Mitchell The Conditioner as my leave-in, and then seal it in with shea butter. I'm no hair expert but I think the shea butter helps to seal moisture in and keeps the moisture from the humidity in the air out to prevent the hair from swelling up. When I wear a twistout, I apply a liberal amount of Ecostyler gel and twists, let it air dry, and I'm pretty much good to go. My hair stays pretty moisturized until my next wash.

Ditto to what everyone else was saying about the SheaMoisture products. I tried one of their products and . It was poof city from all of the glycerin. I threw the rest in the trash.

I was getting the puffy soggy hair as well until I found out it was the glycerin in products I was using. Especially if it's high up on the list. Glycerin in humid weather destroys my styles completely. I do much better using non glycerin products. Humidity will always affect natural hair but for me it's been greatly reduced by cutting out glycerin.

So I heard a theory about puffy hair and I wonder what y'all think about it.

The gist: when you hair is properly moisturized, it will not react to humidity. Only when hair is dry does it react to humidity because it is soaking up mositure from the air.

Thoughts?
