What happens when you wet tangled hair?

Maybe if you have severely tangled, matted hair wetting it might make the matting worse.

For everyday, run of the mill tangles, water melts my knots away.

It detangles my hair. I can only detangle my hair wet. Whether it's matted or tangled , I have to wet it and add conditioner then detangle it.

Depends on what you wet it with. With the proper detangler, a lot of time and more patience you can end up with detangled hair none the worse for wear. I found one by Pantene many years ago that worked wonders for me, but it has long since been discontinued. I have been in search of a comparable one ever since, but haven't found much success. :ohwell:

Just did it now, I had matted roots. The matt was probably half the size of a fist maybe.

Coated in conditioner and it slid out :)

Nope I am able to detangle better with wet hair and conditioner...I would get tons of breakage trying to detangle dry hair. It also would take a long period of time for my hair to mat to the point it would loc due to my texture and curl pattern.

I think it can depend on the hair texture and how matted it is. If your hair is a looser curl the water will elongate the curl and allow knots to come out more easily. If its a tighter curl it may shrink up more and compact the knotting/ matting.

Why do you suppose that moisture would make it easier for the hair to mat/dread?

vtoodler, I agree with Aviah. In addition, the tangles got tighter and shed hairs coiled around other strands to create dreads. Wasn't pretty.
