We've had many discussions in various threads about hit or miss products for our low porosity hair. Let's use this thread to consolidate product misses!

Hopefully this thread can serve as a quick reference of what products to avoid when dealing with low porosity hair.

If possible, let's try to keep the thread to misses only (please).

Any product with hydrolyzed wheat protein which is a very common ingredient, even in products that claim to be moisturizing - it makes my hair feel very protein treatment like.

Protein in general, be it mild or strong -- really makes my hair freak out and puts me on the verge of protein overload each and every time!

Aloe Vera Juice - straight juice is a no!

Products formulated with aloe vera juice - we have a hit and miss relationship. Very random. I can't quite pinpoint when it will / won't work so I try to avoid products containing aloe as much as possible.

Proteins, I actually think the same type of protein as you divachyk (hydrolyzed wheat protein), and wheat proteins I think gives me problems.

Glycerin in the winter (nope).

Castor Oil/Coconut Oil - both make my hair feel hard and stringy (I havn't tried JCBO though).

Most sulphate heavy shampoo's
Shea Moisture products (my relaxed hair loved Shea moisture, now it hates it)

Co washing (this is tricky, because I can cowash up to once a week, and no more than that because of the buildup on my hair) so I can't do it all the time and even then I end up just Shampooing and DCing if my hair needs moisture

"No" Heat. This one is tricky too, I only use heat to diffuse my curls after I shingle. Air drying caused a lot of SSK's and split ends on my ends and frizziness. I have been blow drying about half way on low for about the past 2 weeks and my hair is way less frizzy and its more managable.
 
Water spritz - I either fully wash it or nothing at all. The water droplets just sit on the shaft and I end up wih a crispy mess.
 
basically everything everyone else raves about

1. Baggying-leaves my hair mushy
2. Overnight DCing-my hair NEEDS heat for deep conditioning.
3. Cold water rinses, ACV rinses, Porosity Control. All make my hair hard, brittle and unmanageable.
4. AVJ too high up the ingredient list when it comes to DCs and leave-ins. Makes my hair 'freeze' and makes detangling almost impossible.
5. Glycerin, especially in my leave-in or moisturizer. I don't mind it in my DC though.
6. Pure Butters (i.e. shea, mango, cocoa, etc). It can be in a product, but just plain butter...NO. Just sits right on top of my hair.
7. Protein based regimens. I prefer a moisture-based regimen, but I do have to keep light protein treatments around to prevent moisture overload and keep my relaxed hair strong as I transition.
8. Avocado oil/butter. Whenever I use a product with heavy concentrations of avocado oil/butter, my hair doesn't like it. For this reason, I tend to avoid it all together.
9. Silicones. Unless I am using heat, I stay away from cones.
10. A strict curly-girl regimen. I HAVE to use shampoo to avoid buildup.
11. Plain castor oil. I like JBCO but tend to avoid castor oil and products that have a lot of it.
12. Waxes/lanolin/mineral oil/petroleum in my products. They act like silicones in my hair.


I am probably missing some, but these are off the top of my head. My hair is SO finicky, but once I learned what to avoid, me and my hair get along a lot better.

2. Herbal essence ltr
3. Egg whites mix with honey and conditioner... I cried I think that's what pushed me into protein overload
4. Cantu shea butter repair leave in
5. Scurl
6. Ors moisturizing lotion... crap
7. Head and shoulders
8. Cholesterol
9. Neutregena triple silk touch leave in & conditioner
10. Garnier leave in
11. Darcy botanicals herbal leave-in
12. Silk dreams conditioners and conditioner that can be used as leave in (avacado sparingly in deep stretch)
-let me tell you why I'm a little heated because the website states certain products are protein free. I didn't realize the protein is usually replaced by coconut oil/butter or aloe vera or whatever. It's not her fault at all; I had to live and learn.
13. Jane Carter mango butter whatever
14. Hydrolized or Silk protein leave ins
15. COCONUT OIL
16. Olive Oil 8/10 even in serums
17. Mango, avacado, shea butter
18. Aloe vera
19. Split end serums/oil recipes = breakage city
20. Qhenet Biologics brbc horrible
21. Loreal evercream & evercurl
22. Natural vendors shampoos (still on the look out)
23. Water/hello hydration/oil mix... dry dry dry
24. Cold or cool water
25. Cowashing with any kind of conditioner gave up
26. Styler products = hard hair maybe from the wax or holding agents

I know the products are redundant... They all contain protein/aloe Vera/evco but since I was relaxed with damaged dry hair I read everywhere that this was suppose to save my hair... yea Ok
 
Hmm. Looks like avacado is a trending no-no oil. I wonder why that is. I have been using it diluted in water and its been helpful (not the greatest) but no other oils work well on my hair at all.

That's all I can remember right now.
 
-Aloe Vera anything. If it's not on my edges it's an epic fail. I have recently found it is only good in protein treatments, but it still makes my hair clump. It was a good protein treatment in a long while. Otherwise, if aloe is high on the ingredient list, I puts it back down.
-Glycerin. It's hard enough to keep moisture in without glycerin. Glycerin just makes it worse.
-Coconut oil. I may go back to it, it my past experience made my hair hard.
-Avocado oil. I can use in maybe in a leave-in, but in a DC these days it's not good. Also not good in shampoos either. It's too smoothing.
-Castor oil. Too heavy alone and needs to be heavily diluted.
-Protein. If it isn't silk, keratin or collagen, take it back to the market. I can only use one product with wheat protein and I'm surprised at that still.
-Honey. If it's not in shampoo (and even that depends) it's just too heavy.
-Oil rinses. This just doesn't work.
-Not using hear during deep conditioning. This leads to a waste in product.
-Final rinse. I know most do it for detangling, but this makes my hair heavier than I started out with.
-Rinses. I love color, but it doesn't work. I try, but it doesn't work. I had to do tea/coffee rinses to get it to work.
-Every shampoo on the market. Talk about giving up!
-Butters. I love them but they really have to be an ultimate last step because they leave so much build up. Definition yes. But residue city.
-Coconut milk. In conditioners yes. In leave-ins/ moisturizers no.
-Direct heat. If it's not high, it's not going to look great. If it's high, just hope it doesn't result in breakage city either.
-humectants. For me they only work certain times of the year.

Yes! Black tea Vo5 conditioner it was hard before I even began to rinse it out. I was tripping because my hair doesn't even shed much.

My hair hates:
-WEN Fig (protein made my hair feel weirdo)
-Long relaxer stretches (hair tangles too badly)
-Thin leave-ins (my hair requires thick, creamy leave ins)
-Tresemme Naturals (offers great slip but it doesn't leave my hair nicely moisturized)
-Co-Washing (hit or miss, sometimes my hair hates it, sometimes it loves it)
-Black tea rinsing (leaves my hair feeling like protein)
-Cones (has the tendency to coat my hair and block moisture)
-Neutrogena Triple Moisture (bust; did nothing)
-Kinky Curly Knot Today (not! gripped my hair, had no slip, not very moisturizing)
-Not using a water filter (my hair demands a water filter)

P.S. I love HairVeda SitriNillah and avocado oil :yep:
 
Cherry Lola treatments ( or whatever the treatments are when you mix baking soda with conditioner etc). Made my hair sooooo hard and tangled. I was like wth...how can anyone rave over this????????

Avocado oil is actually my favorite oil. I usually dilute it with water too, but I've used it straight. I rarely use any straight oil on my hair, but I have a mix of JBCO, avocado, and grapeseed that I put into water and spritz on my hair. JBCO is the smallest percentage of the mix and avocado is the largest.

I can never use JBCO straight, but my hair loves it diluted. I can use grapeseed straight, but it doesn't do anything because it is so light. Avocado is my happy medium.
 
I can mix avocado with ceramide oils or as a diluting oil, but I cannot use it on wet hair. That's my :nono:

1. Anything with aloe vera
2. Cold water rinses-leaves my hair tangled
3. Air drying-my hair breaks and tangles. I need heat
4. Glycerin & honey-my hair can only tolerate them in DC's. In leave ins or moisturizers, I can barely get the comb through my hair.
5. Protein products. Any small amount makes my hair hard.
6. Stretching relaxers-breakage and shedding city. I tried stretching to 12 weeks and it caused me major setback. I went back to doing what worked before which is relaxer every 8 weeks.
7. Sealing with oils-the oil just sits on my hair. Butters work great for me.
8. The only coconut oil that works for me is the Parachute brand. My hair is really soft when I use this one. The other brand coconut oils leaves my hair crispy.
9. Thick conditioners will not absorb into my hair. I have to melt them a little first before applying to my hair for deep conditioning.
 
I finally pulled out my hair journal. Here are my misses:

- Cold water rinses made my hair hard
- Undiluted JBCO because it is too heavy
- Anything with a strong perfume scent (this isn’t really a low porosity thing)
- Liquid leave-ins. I need a light lotion-like consistency.
- Shea butter. I can’t use it straight and it is usually a miss when diluted, so I avoid it for the most part.
- Coconut Oil
- Bee Mine Shampoo and Hair Milk. The only one Bee Mine product that semi-worked on my hair so far was the Bee-u-ti-ful Deep Conditioner, but it was too thick as a deep conditioner. It worked ok as a twisting butter.
- Shea Moisture products, except the Purification Mask and the Restorative Elixir
- Jane Carter Shampoo, Conditioner and Wrap & Roll. Some other JC products do work for me (the Nourish & Shine, the Curl Defining Cream, and the leave-in as a moisture spray).
- Aubrey Organics Blue Algae Conditioning Mask. Too much protein.
- Aunt Jackie’s Knot On My Watch leave-in.
- Camille Rose Algae Renew Deep Conditioner. Too thick.
- Darcy’s Botanicals Pumpkin seed Deep Conditioner. Too thick.
- Kinky Curly Knot Today undiluted. Thanks to a recommendation from faithVA, I tried mixing it with an equal part water, and it was ok.
- Ouidad Curl Co-wash. It was too stripping.
- Tressemme Naturals Moisture Conditioner. It had great slip, but it was too fragrant and gave me headaches.

As an aside, going back through my hair journal was kind of fun. It reminded me of some things I forgot, including some comical trial and errors.
 
moisturizing shampoos...they are a joke to my hair
prepooing just leaves build up on my hair
oil rinsing is the devil
porosity control did LITERALLY nothing
no butters or thick molding like products, makes my hair greasy not moisturized and weighs down my bantu knot outs, braid outs, etc
nothing with silicone, i can literally feel it drying my hair out on the sly lol
 
Shea -leaves my hair greasy-dry
Coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil-crispy, frizzy hair
ACV rinses-hard hair
Too much protein
Butters never really absorb -it dries on top of my hair leaving crumbs
Honey
Coconut milk, rice bran, rice milk
Henna
Glycerin is hit or miss
Mineral oil
Cholesterol or Hair Mayo stuff
Creamy stylers and leave ins may or may not absorb.
