@ckisland,A Caucasian curly once told me something that has remained true. Technique is equally, if not more important than product. To this end, I rake and smooth everything into each section of hair, always. This yields predictable, even results almost all of the time.

That is SO true! I don't often wear out styles very much, but the summer is coming here in NE ohio, so I wanna let my hair out a bit.

When I do wng, the technique is what keeps my tangles & knots at bay, NO MATTER WHAT PRODUCT I AM USING AT THE TIME.

Often I just use whatever I have on hand. That's usually co wash and leave a little condish in and shingle. If I have gel, I will use ic fantasia or kccc. Kccc doesn't like to play nice with other products, so once I finish the jar I have had for 3 yrs, I will not re-purchase.

I have used the "activator gel" method. It works great, but their's so much glycerine in it, which makes my hair coated and strange feeling, but it does work.

Remember ladies, if the activator gel by itself doesn't give you enough hold or definition, pair it with your favorite styling gel! I use about 60% activator paired with 40% styling gel. I like light styling gels like Blue Eco Styler or the blue La Bella Styling Gel (smells like oranges :)) I apply the activator gel first, then the styler on top, but you can just mix it together in the jar if you like. Whatever works best :D

how long does this whole process take you? i have been trying to do wash go's for the past week and the application process seems to take me forever........about 2 hours

Seems the consensus is primarily type 3 with a 4a or two sprinkled in. I still think this is.difficult for 4s. I hope a few Type 4s who had success speak up.

For me, type 4 all the way, too many wng = wash and no! I will only do wng for a couple days at a time. The tangles are terrible when I use gel to set the curls.
The only time that I can get away with wng on a regular basis is to use conditioner w/ only a very small amt of setting lotion or gel.

It just becomes a beast, ESPECIALLY for my fine texture, when I am doing that too often and not detangling.

I don't know, I am not a fan of them too often, but I like to do them sometimes in the summer when it gets too hot.

The avatar pic is my wng in a puff from a lonnnnnng time ago. It was so much easier when my hair was shorter. Now that I am so close to bsl, I just don't wnt to deal w/ super long detangling sessions b/c of the wng. It takes me a long time to detangle as it is :D.

It takes me about 5 mins, 10 max. I rake the gel through my hair without using sections. Do you use a lot of sections? TopShelf

TopShelf there's nothing wrong with using sections if you feel you need them! but you may find that you don't need to section off as much. Like, use the four sections and just apply gel that way, instead of parting off into four and then sectioning it even further.

ETA: or maybe do your wash and go's in six sections so that the sections are a bit smaller, but not so small that it takes so long to apply product. I personally feel a wash and go should take no longer than 15 mins max, especially if you do them frequently (more than once a week). Wash and go's are meant to be quick and simple! :3

Absolutely, I did. I almost exclusively wore Wash 'n go's for about 1 1/2 years and went from CBL to just above Waistlength in that short period of time.

I think it was the lack of manipulation and the constant conditioning. I was crazy lol - I used to CoWash like 2 or 3 times a day, DC every week. Definitely about that life :p. I'd go back to it weren't for those evil fairy knots.

Very interesting thread. I am not BSL yet but aspiring to get there this way so I'm subbing...

This is a great thread. I will start this once I get the curl activator gel. I feel like it will help with the lack of moisture.:ohwell:

I think it depends on your hair texture. My hair WL hair shrinks up to my ears in some spots. Detangling and knots are a nightmare when I do wash and goes. I can only do semi-wash and gos. For example I'll rinse my hair while it's in big twists. Let is dry part of the way then undo and let it shrink some.

I went from SL to BSL/MBL doing WnG's. At night I use a LocSoc to keep my hair in place, and when I want to go, I just wet my hair down and scrunch in some conditioner mixed with oils. The only PITA part about my routine is detangling, other than that it's a breeze.

I'm currently @ BSL and I wng the majority of the time. Once in a while I'll straighten it. I don't do protective styling. My twist outs evetually look like wngs, anyway. I do struggle with tangles and SSKs, though.

well I got my curls back and I am loving it. protecting my hair just leads to me messing up my curl pattern. but I have been wng everyday and I have no problem and with the knots I just put she butter on the nap and edges as a loc method and it has cut that down really.

How is that possible? Curious. :)

I will try WnG once the weather warms up again (raining a lot these days). The last two times I WnGed my hair knotted and tangled up like crazy. I will keep trying until I get it right...

greenandchic because I was using a lot of oils and bantu knot my hair while it was wet and that makes my hair straight when it drys. so it messes up my curl and I have to tame my curl all over again. yea my hair is like that.

This thread is intriguing; I never considered wash n' go styles until reading this thread. I've worn my hair partially down (just the back section) just a few times...once I didn't get favorable comments and recently I got favorable comments but my hair tangled so badly I think a little of it broke off (probably used the wrong product/method). I am watching vids from that link someone posted earlier and I may experiment with doing my whole my head again. I've tried Kinky Curly and even that NoodleHead stuff but didn't like the end result. I have to be very careful since my hair is very fine and prone to tangles but I'm so tired of buns and I really need to give my edges a rest. Someone asked me the other week why I never wear my hair down, why I always wear a ponytail or bun...I didn't answer the question because well I didn't really want to explain why (prone to tangles plus I'm style challenged). I am seriously considering this style though. I just have to figure out the right products and method for my hair. I'm watching tutorials on how to minimize tangles, etc now so I guess I will see how this works for me.

Ah! I know what you mean - I thought you meant permanent! LOL I actually wear my hair that way all the time (better for retention and taming tangles for me), but I do miss my curls.

so I did a dc overnight and I wng with mixed chicks. I am waiting on my hair to dry as we speak. I love seeing my curls again. and what I found out with all the oils I use olive oil does not mess up my curls if I use just a little and it helps with brittle hair as well. That problem I was having with my edges from the sulfur is gone just a little olive oil and it took care of it.

Poohbear is the activator gel still working for you? :3

I've been thinking of treating myself and picking up some of my beloved Worlds of Curls lol :D I'm visiting with my parents so I'm a lot closer to the BSS that carries it now. I might go pick up some sometime this week. I wish Sally Beauty Supply or Walmart/Target/Walgreens/CVS :look: would start carrying it!!

One side of my hair is more coarse and I get breakage. How do you moisturize your wash n go without ruining the definition?

whiteoleander91 - yes, it's working great for me. I'm still using it and doing wash n go's. Now, I've been using EcoStyler gel over it for more elongation and to help my hair dry. When I use Long Aid by itself, it stays too moisturized and gradually shrinks each day.

I also WnG 100% of the time. I BC'd to 1" on 6/7/12 and almost one yr later i have about 61/2" of hair. (i haven't measured but my avi is current.) I'm not BSL by a long shot but i think I've made pretty good progress. I have dusted 2-3 times totalling approx. 3/4 in.

Sometimes I WnG with just conditioner left in. If i want more definition I use curl activator gel. (see avi)

Poohbear I'm glad it's still working for you!

Thanks. Back in the day when my natural hair was shorter, I tried World of Curls on my hair and liked it too. It wasn't as moisturizing as Long Aid but it still did the trick for curl definition. I think I probably didn't use it consistently because it's not readily available in common stores like you said.

^^yeah it sucks soo bad that it isn't easily accessible. I would probably purchase WoC exclusively if I could simply pick up a jar at Walmart or Target. I love the way it smells and my hair reeeally likes it. But I love the way Long Aid makes my hair feel, too. If they would change the scent and if Target started carrying it (I go to Target a lot more than Walmart) I would be soo happy lol.
