Are Keratin treatments beneficial to hair growth?

To begin- Sorry if this topic has already been brought up before. I had a little difficulty finding any similar threads so forgive me if this is a repeat.

(I'll try not to stretch this out TOO much it's a VERY long story)

In summary, I'm 16, biracial, and have what appears to be somewhere between 3B and 3C hair (picture here). After years of straightening my hair without heat protectant/putting in a relaxer/brushing my hair repeatedly while wet, my hair is very damaged, uneven, and dull. I used to have hair I could sit on. I got it cut slightly 3 years ago, and it has not grown back since then. In fact, it's gotten considerably shorter by just breaking off. Almost every one of my hairs are split ends, and the hair on the right side of my head just sticks out.

I'm trying to get back on track with my hair now, as I desire long, silky smooth hair more than anything now! Note that I still find it necessary to straighten my hair. I detest my curls and never under any circumstances allow them to be seen in public. For the past 3 or 4 months I've been straightening my hair only once a week with lot's of heat protectant. I deep condition my hair every weekend. Also within the last month and a half I've been taking silica (in the form of bamboo tea), biotin, chlorella, and probiotics, and eating a much healthier diet. I've already noticed my hair is appearing slightly thicker and growing out just a teensy bit. Also, with summer coming up I may try to not straighten my hair, as hard as that will be!

I know this will help thicken and grow out my hair, but there's one thing I'm still concerned about- the pesky split ends and unevenness! :angry2:
I know what the common advice is to split ends- get your hair trimmed. The thing is my hair is so damaged that every strand of hair is uneven. Even my baby hairs have split ends. The way my hair is, you would have to cut every hair individually. So, I'm looking for an alternative to tame my split ends and frizzy hair.

I was looking into keratin treatments to help with smoothing my hair.
However, I was unsure as to whether this would hinder my hair growth or not.
Maybe five years ago I got a Brazilian Blowout. I had so much hair at the time that they had to use extra, and the price ended up being $600! :perplexed: I barely remember it, but I do know that the texture of my hair was unchanged and it was still curly after washing it, which I was unhappy about. A salon near me is offering just a generic "Keratin Treatment" at $325 (do-able). Would this help strengthen my hair? Or, would the chemicals and initial straightening be too much of a step back? Would you recommend any keratin treatment at all? Is there anything I should be doing differently? I'd really prefer some sort of keratin treatment that straightens out my hair/changes the texture, but if that's not possible without damaging my hair than that's fine.

Thanks in advance, and sorry it took me so dang long to get to the point :whyme:

Please list your current product rotation and reggi for more help.

My daughter is mixed too and has your hair type. Typing is hard, but yea, I'd say a silky type 3a-b.She is about 3" from WL.

Bald headed or curls? You decide. In the state your hair is in that 450oF heat from keratin will probably destroy what's left. It's not worth it.

Enjoy your curls! They are lovely...I see nothing wrong with them. Why do you hate them so much?

Find products and a simple regimen that work for you. You could rollerset your wet hair to stretch it straight and not use heat at all. It might not be just the heat, but all the chemicals in the serums and other products you use could be contributing.

I am a 3c that loves QOD Max Organiq. I have done keratin treatments in my hair since April 2009 and here in Texas they are a Godsend in the humidity. Last year I experienced severe breakage due to bleach/hair so I haven't done a treatment since August 2012.

I am telling you all of this to recommend that you get your hair in good shape before you do anything else to your hair. I've been wearing my hair in a bun since Oct 2012 and I am just now able to wear it down again without it looking crazy. I don't plan to do another keratin treatment until the Summer of 2014 or 2015. Just make the sacrifice to get your hair healthy it's worth it in the end.

There's a lady here named biancaelyse and she does this same treatment on her daughters hair and they have hip length hair. She does maybe 2 passes of heat on their hair instead of 10. I will see if I can find the thread for you. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=564641&highlight=qod+organiq

Also, don't worry about what your hair looks like wet. With QOD Max Organiq my hair was still curly wet (Unlike the formeldahyde based treatments that gave me bone straight hair) but when I did rollersets to straighten my hair it stayed straight even in high humidity. Remember, the curl in your hair represents your hair's natural strength. The more curl removed the more damage that's been done to your hair.

I also recommend a "weaker" treatment because I know teens are fickle and you might "hate" your curly hair today and "love" it tomorrow so a milder treatment will give you more options PLUS the versatility to wear it straight or curly.:yep:

Your parent/guardian can purchase the treatment here: http://www.qodamerica.com/qod-max-organiq-shot-60ml.html

Although I haven't done it myself (although I plan to down the line) I would look into the keratin alternatives such as the design essential treatments and Arosci to name examples as they are cheaper, don't require as harsh chemicals and use Amino Acids instead.

There is a thread floating around concerning them you can look into but in the meantime you can try to see if rollersetting is something you maybe can look into.

^^^ This. The protein strengthens the hair and they use less heat at 365 instead of 450 with only one or two passes instead of 10 like the keratin treatments. It's a way to help ensure the hair stays healthy. I'm going to do design essentials this summer so that the humidity doesn't kick in.

What is your regimen? what kind of heat tools are you using? Why do you detest your curls?

I like both wearing my hair straightened and using keratin treatments. from how you describe your hair there are issues that need to be addressed before you decide to add more heat and chemicals to the mix.

QOD Max Organiq is a cysteine based treatment just like Design Essentials and Arosci. I always did 2 passes of QOD Max Organiq at about 410 degrees (my flatiron setting option) and washed it out immediately.

I did an Arosci treatment last year and I was not impressed, my hair swole up like a bag of popcorn in the Texas humidity. Perhaps Design Essentials is a better treatment. :yep:

Your curls are probably super cute you just haven't seen them they way they SHOULD be seen in a while. Even if you don't chemically straighten your hair, excessive straightening of the hair using heat tools and any other method of straightening makes the hair temporarily loosen it's curl pattern. So if you're flat ironing your hair every week and come time for wash day your hair may look funky because it won't quite curl all the way back up. It might take a few washes before you hair falls back into the proper curl pattern.

I say EMBRACE your curls. Lay off the heat for a bit which is probably why you have split ends everywhere. Take the plunge and trim your ends or else they will just get worse and cause terrible tangles. I would go to a salon for very bad splits. If you still want to wear your hair straight try rollersetting for a while but I'd still advise to keep your manipulation as low as possible by bunning or doing some other PS as often as possible. You're hair needs a break.

This all reminds me of a thread created called something like "Final words before a major set back".

I actually won the arosci serum and foam and can't wait to use them! I did a review on the naked and the stylists came after me with pitchforks because I had puffy results! maybe it was the technique? Apparently these BKT alternatives need a special amount of heat and tension to get it "right" or so they say.:look:

I have qod max in right now and I am happy with it but i would like to see what arosci can do. If it doesn't work out I will stick with keratin treatments. they haven't let me down so far and I don't need special turns and tricks for it too work

Well, I sure hope you have better results than I did lol. I have tested Qod Max Organiq in Florida in August and in Texas and my hair never poofed.

Arosci didn't hold up worth a darn! My hair looked like a bag of cotton candy in humidity. I don't have time for that lol.

Do you have Qod Max or Qod Max Organiq? The Organiq is a cysteine treatment and the regular Max is formeldahyde or aldehyde based. Both are fab, but the regular on eliminates all of my curl so that's no bueno. QOD Max Organiq is my fav hands down.:yep:

I am using the organiq. i do want to try the inoar argan oil to compare

Ah, nice to see all these responses.

Regimen- Nothing strict or specific at all. I use the Ovation Hair Cell Therapy System every Sunday. I wash my hair using the sulfate and paraben free shampoo, as well as a bit of Avon Moroccan oil shampoo. Afterwards I get out of the shower, coat my hair (especially the uneven sides) with Avon 3D Damage Repair and the Ovation conditioner. I put on a shower cap and leave it on for about 2 hours, sometimes more. I put the Ovation Creme Rinse in my hair, then wash it all out lightly. After my hair is completely dry, I go ahead and straighten in with a pretty generic "Wet2Straight" hair straightener at 350 degrees. I also use a smaller Revlon flat-iron for the front parts and roots of my hair, but that has no indication of temperature. Right after straightening my hair, I put some rollers in (VERY messily I may add) with some aloe setting gel to give my hair a wave.

As angsty and teenage-esque as this is going to sound, I really, really, dislike curly hair. It does not fit my face well at all, it's not versatile, and it doesn't fit my "style" at all. The picture I attached is of the hair wet, un brushed out. It turns into somewhat of an afro after being brushed. I've never liked the style of curly hair and prefer long flowing hair which I can then curl with rollers. The straightened hair gives me more versatility. I never envision myself being seen with my natural hair, nor do I like to think about it.

As for rollers... I use rollers frequently on my straightened hair to give it some waves. I have attempted to wet-set my hair with both velcro and foam rollers, and it has been no good. My hair retains it's texture and doesn't straighten or curl at all.
I also struggle while putting curlers in my hair when it's straightened because of the unevenness. This is a poor example, but here is a picture of my hair sticking out like crazy rolled up in rollers, just to demonstrate how uneven it is.

So, as I understand (or not) from the responses, it would be advised that I NOT get a keratin treatment/Brazilian Blowout on my hair? I thought so. More chemicals can't possibly be good! I just remember how silky smooth and tangle free my hair was after I got my Brazilian Blowout.
Can I get some more details on these Amino Acid treatments? Are they done at a salon or can they be done at home? Will it help rebuild and strengthen my hair?

NO biggie, curly hair isn't for everyone. If you tried and don't like, well at least you tried. :)

Anyhoo, Design Essentials treatment has to be done at a salon unless you can get your hands on some :sekret:. QOD Max Organiq can be purchased online for about $40 bucks.

After you get your hair in shape you have to clarify then *very* lightly apply the treatment. I always apply the treatment on damp hair because I will not blow dry my naked hair after using clarifying shampoo. Did this for almost 4 years and always had great results.

QOD Max Organiq

1). Clarify
2.) Lightly apply treatment - very lightly - blow dry will be extra crispy if you apply too much!
3). Blow dry
4). For your texture I would do 2 passes at about 410 degrees
5). Wait 5-15 minutes after the flatiron process then rinse, shampoo and condition(this is what I do) OR you can leave it in for 48 hours then rinse. If you want straight results leave it in longer.
6). After you rinse, shampoo/condition and just style has usual.

Okay, so just to clarify- Is this QOD Max Organiq for repairing hair or for changing the texture? And also where can I get it for $40? I can only find it for $200 :perplexed:

Right now I'm trying to strengthen my hair from where I am now. Thought it would be nice for the texture of my hair to change, it's not 100% necessary, I'm just looking for a treatment that will add some strength to my hair right now.

I washed my hair today and I'm deep conditioning it right now. As I washed, lots of hair still broke off, but a tad bit less than usual.

Sorry if this question has already been answered and I'm just not seeing it, but what do I do about hair that's spilt not just at the ends but all the way up the shaft? That's how almost all of my hairs are, and it's very frustrating when trying to curl my hair with rollers or do anything with it for that matter because it's so uneven and split in different spots. Is the only solution to this to cut it off?

Summer is coming up for me in two weeks, and during this time I'm going to attempt not to straighten my hair at all. It depends on how often I go out. I'm usually a hermit during the summer, but if I do go out I'll have to straighten my hair! Otherwise I'll try to use zero heat.

Thanks everyone for their patience.

I think it would be better for you to do a strong protien treatment rather thana BKT (something like nexuss polymedic)

they sell a 2 oz sample for $40 on amazon. its really small though. it would be better if you can buy some off someone who has a big bottle(thats what I did:look:)

Also it seems like you're doing a lot of heat on a daily basis. YOu need to back off.Read the threads on how to straighten via a "silk wrap" which is a roller set and then you wrap your hair, put plastic over and sit under a dryer. You can get a soft hooded dryer for this. If it can straighten 4a hair like mine, it can straighten yours too. Yes the dryer is heat, but it's a lot less heat then flat ironing every day, and you can keep your hair cross wrapped until you are ready to wash it again.

I think you got some good responses. I will add two things:

1. I detested my curls too until I tried everything and realized my hair wouldn't retain length If i kept relaxing it with chemicals. So I had to choose, relaxed straight shoulder length hair forever OR BSL OR LONGER natural hair.
(For reference sake, I tried for 4 years to use every technique i could to retain length- stretch relaxers, cut back on heat, use milder relaxers, hid my hair under weaves etc. and even with all of that I only made it to APL.)

2. Please for the love of goodness stop using those rollers! .....rant over. Get some hard plastic rollers that won't absorb all the moisture from your hair and damage it more or get some silk rollers. No more Velcro or sponge.

QOD Max Organiq is one of the newer generation treatments that does not contain any formaldehyde. It can smooth and loosen the texture a bit and it will strengthen your hair because the main ingredient is cysteine but the main reason it is a great product to me is because it made my hair humidity resistant when I wore it straight.

Also, when you say your hair is split do you mean dry and damaged or that one strand is actually split in two all the way up the shaft of the hair? It sounds like you definitely need a trim or cut of some sort.

Dudley's DRC 28 and Nexus Emergencee are both excellent strong proteins to use to strengthen your hair, just make sure you follow up with a moisturizing conditioner afterwards.

I love that new L'Oreal Total Repair 5 Restoring Conditioner and Erasing Balm with Ceramides for damaged and overworked hair. It is an excellent line of products, imo. :yep:

I would also like to know where to find this for $40. I see it as $200 to $400 on Amazon and eBay.

I've been looking, but have found nothing. Where do I buy bkt? I only see Organix BKT in drug stores and I don't want that.

I would also like to know where to find this for $40. I see it as $200 to $400 on Amazon and eBay.

I posted a link on the 3rd post of the thread. The bottle is very small only a few ounces but it is very concentrated so you don't need a lot.

I decided to buy samples of global bkt and softliss. I plan on swimming 3/4 times a week in the summer so I need a more manageable WNG. Hopefully one of these will work for my 4a/4b hair.

Again, thanks a ton for the feedback

Also it seems like you're doing a lot of heat on a daily basis. YOu need to back off.Read the threads on how to straighten via a "silk wrap" which is a roller set and then you wrap your hair, put plastic over and sit under a dryer.

For the record, I only flat iron my hair once a week. From there on I just put dry foam rollers in it, zero heat after it's been straightened on Sunday. And hm, I'll have to check out silk wrapping. First I need to figure out how to properly roll my hair wet though since I haven't yet succeeded in doing that.

Please for the love of goodness stop using those rollers! .....rant over. Get some hard plastic rollers that won't absorb all the moisture from your hair and damage it more or get some silk rollers. No more Velcro or sponge.

Oh, I had no idea the sponge and velcro rollers were detrimental to my hair. Now I just have to convince my mother to let me buy another set of rollers...

Also, when you say your hair is split do you mean dry and damaged or that one strand is actually split in two all the way up the shaft of the hair? It sounds like you definitely need a trim or cut of some sort.

One strand usually is split into two. But also occasionally I'll see some that have multiple splits all the way up the shaft. This weekend after I straighten it I'll ask my mother to trim it. It seems like it may be hard considering all my undesired "layers" and wacky lengths. Also definitely checking out that Nexxus Emergencee. What type of moisturizing conditioner should I use?

As for this QOD Max Organiq- When should I go about doing this? Obviously right now my hair is uneven and full of split ends (I wouldn't describe it as dry though). I didn't straighten it yesterday, but I'm going to this weekend and I'll also have to do it twice more during the summer. So, if everything goes correctly, I'll only straighten my hair three times this summer while taking lots of Bamboo Silica, biotin, as well as a better diet.

Would it be better to do the treatment at the beginning of summer or at the end? Also is there anything else I should add to my regimen during the summer?

Thanks in advance

I have the DE treatment and yes, I feel like it helps me retain length.
I will continue getting this treatment as long as they make it. DE treatment is amino acid based. It's healthy for my hair in that it fills in the holes/weak areas along my strand. Amino acids provide strength, but it's not as severe as a hardcore protein treatment for my hair.

I tried BKT in the past. So glad I only did a test patch because the test section sure enough broke off.

I tried a test patch of the Arosci treatment. IMO it's not as strong as the DE treatment, meaning my hair didn't stay straight/smooth as long as it does with DE.

I tried a test patch of the Arosci treatment. IMO it's not as strong as the DE treatment, meaning my hair didn't stay straight/smooth as long as it does with DE.

yodie

You are gonna make me spend $167 for 8oz! I want to try it so bad!

Dove56, I LOOOOOVVVEEE the DE treatment. It's really a godsend. I can't wear relaxers, so anything that strengthens/straightens my hair without damage is a keeper.

Try it!!!
