Direct quote from Reniece:

"I primarily used the FHI on your hair. I use a Chi or Andis blowdryer most of the time."

I also know she uses a warm (not hot) stove type pressing comb to touch up my roots and edges sometimes. Not always though.

Chi or Andis

But I have to say, I get great results at home and I use a Hot Tools ion ceramic dryer and a Conair flat iron from rite aid. Recently I switched to a Corliss argan oil flat iron. I got great results with both.

I use the same products Reniece does on my hair at home. Kerastace olio serum. Joico smoothing balm.

I think the key factors are:

1. Start with healthy, trimmed, clean, hair.

2. Go light on the styling products.

3. Use the highest temperature NECESSARY to get your hair straight. No higher.

4. Use one pass. Then go over the hair again AFTER you finish the entire head, if it needs another pass. Don't repeatedly pass over the same strand of hair.

Reniece says blow dry technique matters alot. However I have gotten my hair bone straight from air drying and stretching. I think air drying can work if you have a fine strand with a "looser" texture like mine. Coarser hair needs the blow dryer to help stretch. IMO

@MsAminta

@havilland gave good points.

Here's some of mine blended in with some of hers.

Start with healthy, trimmed, clean, deep conditioned hair.

Use a flat iron that gives you the best results.

One pass can do it for my hair.

My hair gets most of it's moisture from deep conditioning, but a heat protectant is used prior to getting it flat ironed. I don't know what heat protectant she uses on my hair. I never bother asking her about what products she uses because I trust her judgement on what works for my hair. After hair is flat ironed, go very, very light on the product so the hair won't get weighed down. My hair can keep 'swang' in it for two weeks once Reniece has flat ironed it.

When I get my hair flat ironed, I don't wear it down every single day. Out of those two weeks, I may wear it down once or twice, and I'm happy with that (seems to be the other people around me who get a little ticked when I have it pinned up). :giggle: Hey, I'm just protecting my hair, and keeping the ends as happy as I can. :yep:

I don't bother flat ironing my own hair at home (been a very long time since I've flat ironed my own hair). I wear protective styles, and I'm cool with that.

I don't get my hair flat ironed every time I go to Reniece. As a matter of fact, in 2012, I only had my hair flat ironed a few times.

I do not flat iron my own hair at home any more (it's been a very long time since I've done that myself. I'm very happy with wearing my hair in natural, protective styles, and they're cute. :grin:

I always tell people, the less I do to my hair, the more it grows, and another famous saying of mine is 'if it's not bothering me, I don't bother it' (referring to me and my hair). I have my hair in a banded ponytail, and it's been like that for 8 days. I will wash my hair today and fix it again in another protective style (to last until the next wash day). A satin scarf and a satin bonnet do good at protecting my hair at night and keeping it in place.

I hope this helps.

Co-signing the bolded areas.

When Reniece blow dries my hair, it puts me to sleep. Yes, that's exactly how gentle she is. :yep:

Co-signing on this :yep:. I'm not sure what products she uses on my hair (probably the same ones she uses on havilland) but whatever she uses it's very minimal, and she only does one pass with the flat-iron. After she's done flat-ironing my whole head she may take the flat-iron or a hot comb and lightly go over my roots in certain spots.

She's extremely gentle when she blow-dries. She once told me that good blow-dry results have a lot to do with the overall final results. She ALWAYS shampoos and blow-dries my hair in sections (usually about 6 sections for me). She also deep conditions my hair everytime :yep:. For some reason I can never get the same blow-dry results at home :lol:.

As far as her trimming/cutting, she does this based on your needs and wants. One of the things I love about Reniece is that she always tells and shows you exactly how much she's gonna trim and asks if you're cool with it before she starts cutting.

Thanks for the reply!! :)

Does anyone have any tips on how she trims hair into the u shape. I'd love to recreate it at home on my own.

@MsAminta

Watching her video about 20+ times....I've notice a few things when it comes to her straightening method.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyYhRNP5zZw&feature=youtu.be

Pause the video at 1:14 - this lady has natural hair and (i'm assuming) Reniece elongates the hair this way to prep before blowing drying.
Its the same at the time 3:52-4:00 you can actually see Reniece elongating the hair this way.

2:39-2:44 you can see her blow dry technique with the comb attachment...then she follows by with the flat iron. You can already tell in the blow dry clip how straight and bouncy the hair is...the flat iron just adds a polish and shine to the hair.

I was studying this video hard. It looks like the blow drying technique is key.

I've been lurking in here like a fiend waiting for my next hit (The Hit being Reniece's signature technique :lol:). Then I remembered that DontSpeakDefeat was trained by Reneice and she has a Youtube channel in which she showcases a a variety of blow dry/flat iron techniques (One of which I'm sure was inspired by Reneice). I'm sure they're not exactly alike, but either way you can't go wrong. From what I've seen and heard both are amazing healthy hair/weave stylist.

Her Channel is here:

HTH's :)

Anyone give these tips a try, and want to show your results? I am curious to see if we can get close at home, because I am way on the other side of the Country, and have no chance of getting an appointment :crybaby:

^^^^^THIS^^^^ I LOVEEEEE the way she trims the hair in the u shape. Pretty please does anyone know how she does this. Is she trimming at an angle?

Once she finishes flat ironing the first pass, (the hair is bone straight at this point. No bump or curls). SHe combs the hair straight down your back and trims around the length very lightly where it's thin or needs it. This is usually a u shape. Sometimes it's blunt though if u request that. Becuase the hair usually wears more on the sides, a u shape is a result.

She only trims what is needed.

@havilland
@Allandra

Does Reniece style your hair in protective styles, or do you primarily get a blow dry style and protective style your own hair in between?

When i first started with her I was doing weaves as a protective style. I did weaves for one year straight, then i would do 6 months on and 6 months off.

Over time (I've been a client since 2007) I learned to do trims and dustings at home. she taught me how to care for my hair and helped me with a schedule, products, techniques, etc. so as i stopped getting weaves, i went to her for texlax touch ups and trims.

now i go to her for length checks and trims and whenever i just want my hair to look nice. so i usually get a blow dry, not an up style. i try not to use heat more than 4 times a year, so i factor in my visits with my no heat schedule.

i don't really do weaves anymore since i am transitioning, so i do half wigs and buns as a protective style at home.

Ladies, ladies, ladies! Ya'll are flowin with the tips!:yep:

TheEspressoHair I watched her new video today, but your observations are on point! You really have been studying the video! lol

EnExitStageLeft Thanks for the link to dontspeakdefeats videos. I'll be checking those out soon.

I would like to start staightening my hair myself using these techniques because driving to LA to get my hair done is just :nono: BUT I am in search of someone to do my trims. I would love to get that U shape. I am just so paranoid of scissor happy stylists though. I need a good recommendation (with visual results LOL).
