Anyone flat irons their hair faithfully every two weeks?

I'm working on it. Not every two weeks like clockwork but I am in the process now of pressing my hair whenever I want which is probably going to be every two weeks to every month. I intend to keep at this unless I notice a major set back. I have some splits when I trim but when I trim I maintain length moreso than loose length. I'm good with that.

Me! I have been flat ironing every 2wks since the end of September. I dont blow dry though. I let my hair air dry in braids first. My seems healthy to me. I make sure I deep condition for a couple of hours.

Your hair (in avatar and siggie)...is SO pretty!!! :yep:

I can't say every two weeks, but more like every three weeks :) I'd say my hair is healthy overall. The thing is, I don't have much of a choice...wearing my hair out curly isn't a great option for me, it requires too much time, too manipulation and too many ssks

pelohello (and everyone else) do you only flat iron on DC days? How many days a week do you DC? (I know most people do it 1-2 times but I heard some ladies do it 3 times!)

I flat iron my hair every week, 2 weeks is too long for me to go without washing my hair. I'm relaxed for over 20 years now and hair is pretty healthy considering all the manipulation I put it through.

Yes I flat iron my hair everytime I wash and right now this is once every 7 to 10 days. When I started my hair journey sometimes twice a week. I DC everytime I wash and put my hair in 4 braids with sunflower carrot oil and allow it to airdry. I run the blowdryer quickly through each section and proceed to flat iron. I stay on top of trimming my ends and have no problem. I find that this way works best for me because my hair in it's natural state is too much for me to deal with I get frustrated trying to style it.

I do! I'm natural 4a and flat iron faithfully every 2 weeks. A couple of things I do:

-DC every time I wash my hair - At least an hour or two, but overnight if I have the time

-I blowdry carefully in small sections to avoid unecessary breakage - takes a little longer but I think it's worth it

-Only one pass - If you have a decent flat iron, enough heat and your hair has been blowdried well there is no reason to do multiple passes. I'm using a Sedu Revolution right now and I love it
This is exactly the technique I use to flat iron ( I use smaller sections though):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aJDS8N_p7Q

Hit the roots once>put my denman brush in and chase with flat iron through the length of the hair
- A few drop of heat protectant before blowdrying and and right before flat ironing - not too much though, I hate that greasy heavy flat ironed look

-Mix up the temps - I do like the super pin straight look sometimes so I'll use high heat when I want to (450ish), but I don't do that every time. Some weeks I'll used around 375

-Use only coconut oil throught the week to moisturize. I don't put any other products on my hair while straight

-Avoid touch ups as much as possible. During the second week when my hair isn't looking as fresh I'll ususally curl it with my Carouso steam rollers

I think it's reasonable to expect some straight pieces here or there if your are flat ironing consistently like this, but overall I am pleased at how my curl pattern is holding up. I don't really take hair pics often so I this is from 2010, but this is pretty much how my hair still looks. I'm around WL right now. Just flat ironing every 2 weeks and maintianing it there.

an important part to this question is how many who do flat iron that frequently and have healthy hair ALSO have fine strands.

i know asians, indians, whites who blow dry EVERY DAY and have long hair b/c their strands can handle it. even longhairdontcare2011 on youtube who has some of the thickest strands of a 4a person i've seen used heat once a month and still had issues with some damage at the ends of her hair.

Everyone's experience is different. If you have to baby your hair to retain length/prevent breakage and you don't use heat, significant heat may be problematic if you are attempting to grow long hair.

But don't the groups you mentioned also get trims and cuts more frequently, too? If so they are getting rid of the damage before it becomes obvious.

*Raises hand* Im relaxed prob 4b texture. I use heat protectant (mizani or beyond the zone). I do multiple passes and use a hot comb on the edges. Fewer passes are required if I roller set than if I airdry. I do semi regular search and destroys and dust ends every 4-6 mos

I used to flat iron my hair every week and it was full, thick waist length . I would deep condtion and trim my ends faithfully though . I dont anymore just out of pure laziness (lol) but I may start again maybe every couple of weeks .

I use coconut oil and a dab of crisco...my hair doesn't get oily.

To keep my edges from reverting, I use JBCO

Flatiron at 320

I think natural hair is different from relaxed. I used to use pressing oil and straighten every 3 weeks but now my hair gets greasy with no product added by 3-4 days. I would never use oil in my hair no matter how light. I hate feeling oily residue in my hair.

Currently I DC every 2wks since I am wearing my hair straight; however, when I am protective styling I DC 1-2x's a week.

So I only flat iron my hair when I DC. It makes my hair softer and stronger when I DC:yep:

I'm natural and I used to flat iron every two weeks. My hair is fine (strands) - but I would also DC for at least two to four hours. My hair remained healthy. I have noticed that now that I only flat iron every month - I don't DC as often - and have had some breakage - not much but some. Interesting.

Same here! I used to be able to wear it out curly with no issues. Not that my hair is longer it actually shrinks up worse, which makes me get terrible knots. I have to keep it in a stretched style. For now keeping it straight in the winter is my solution until I figure something else out.

I am thinking of flat ironing this winter, what temperature(s) are you ladies flat ironing at and how many passes?

My CHI doesn't have a temperature gauge unfortunately. I do two passes and leave it alone for a week or two. Keeping it in a bun at night helps keep my hair straight. If the temperature outside is over 65 degrees, that's it I'm done LOL My hair will revert and poof up.

I used to do it but eventually ended up with damage no matter how much heat protectant i used .I also believe all the silicone (from the HP) was drying my hair .
