Florida Naturals - How do you do It?

I live in Alabama but work in central and south Florida 2 weeks a month. The humidity in AL is bad but i can get by with using serums. In FL, I get an hour tops before its FRO CITY. Should I give up on being able to wear out styles in the summer that look decent?

Gel without glycerin for wash-n-go or pomade for braidout and such. I am wearing a wash n go on dy 3 with fote gel for sunburns.

Do you do steam treatments or hydration?

I'm from Florida but when I do visit and when I pressed alot it helped me when I was getting steam treatments from saving me from the humidity.

Then when I didn't think it would work for the pressing and straight look... i would do flexi rod's on dry hair overnight and then just pull back with a hair band and im good!! Still a cute and very easy style to manage...

I twisted last night with SM Smoothie and original moxie pomade and I still had a FRO within an hour. The SM does have glycerin so that may be the culprit.

I dont have a steamer so thats not an option right now. I look a hot mess the entire time I'm here. If I do a bun then my edges get fuzzy no matter what I do.

I'm anti BKT for the moment and considering Im only in FL 4-6 days a month it woundnt be a good investment.

For fuzzy edges you need to be heavy handed with a butter and use a edge smoother ,that will do,it works for my mother's 4b s hair.

My hair was a nightmare in Miami last year. My hair looked like dry frizzy afro, that couldn't be tamed with no amount of combing, brushing, or gel.

Of course that's when I met my boyfriends family for the first time. Smh

I wondered the same thing about how black women cope down there. Many women I saw were wearing weaves, wigs, or slicked back ponytails.

I really hate using it at times, but shea butter. Just pure shea butter none of that stuff with fillers or grease. I use this if I really want no shrinkage or poofy-ness. I really never go out early in the morning where the dew is really falling. Usually I'm out by the afternoon and the humidity is pretty much non existent. If I know I can't avoid it I wear a beanie or a puff. I kind of stopped trying to fight it.

The most inexpensive product I find that lays my cuticles is the Eden Body Works Jojoba Monoi Oil Mist.

Ecostyler for w & g works like a charm for me. For less hold I usually use v05 moisture Milks as a styler. I use way to much product so I have to use something cheap

When I lived in Central FL I was texlaxed...my hair woudnt stay straight unless it was done at the salon with Marcel irons and that thinned my hair out over time. I did a lot of braidouts and wash and gos. I remember I used to use a homemade version of Miss Jessies Curl Pudding and that kept the frizz to a minimum. Id be curious to see how it holds up as a natural. My sister still lives there and we visit once or twice a year so I guess Ill find out lol. Better have a backup style huh?

I also wear weather proof styles like buns, twists, puffs and my trusty dusty beanie. W&G's on the other hand, are tricky. I have to sleep with a grocery bag on my head everynight to stretch the curl to keep it elongated to a certain length and I absolutely can't touch my hair too much or else frizz will happen, especially in the front where I dont have too much definition. My w&g's get big, but they never dry.

I wear styles that look better as they grow...mostly braid outs or wash and goes with ecostyler. Too much gel and I have to constantly fluff and lift my hair though.

LaughingOctopus - I literally LOL'd at the grocery bag. I find if I'm to Heavy handed with product my hair either looks ashy or feels coated which I hate.

Z-kitty the hold is firm, but once my twists are set and I do the twistout, all I have to do to get the firmness out is to scrunch my hair for a few minutes and that makes my hair softer.

Any day with more than 20% humidity = bun day. I enjoy my hair down at home for 2 minutes before the silk scarves come out, lol. My hair reverts while working out and I have some serious shrinkage - I can't hardly wait for winter.

I just moved here this month. I bun 100% of the time so i'm not concerned with how my hair looks, but it just feels wrong.
I don't use cones and I'm going to start using them to see if that fixes it

A couple of ladies mentioned being heavy handed. When I was natural I had to use more product to keep my hair from going wild. I ended up texlaxing and I still have to more product than normal or I will look like Mufasa's lil cousin. The humidity here is horrible. I thought at home in VA was bad but FL is worse.
