Hey guys. I'll be natural for a year come the 9th, and I'm starting to think that maybe this thing isn't good for me. This passed Saturday I took my box braids out, pre-pooed with sesame oil, washed my hair with L'oreal Sulfate Free Shampoo, conditioned with Dove intensive repair conditioner, blow dried, used some jane carter leave-in, sealed with jojoba oil and then with cantu shea butter pomade. My ends are so dry let me tell you. I did a twist out, the first one was a disaster, the second one was decent, which I kept for two days, and I did a bantu knot today. I don't know if when I twisted the tension caused issues, or what, but my ends have been dry since I took my hair out. I don't have split ends, so I'm just not sure what's going on. Please help?

BTW:
- I haven't clarified in god knows how long
- My hair is moisturized, in fact when I put my hands in the length my hands get a little oily
- I spritzed each bantu knot with water and lavender oil mixed, sealed and everything like described above and then covered my hair with a satin cap

Hey

Are you due a trim? Also because your ends are the oldest part of your strands, you need to concentrate your moisturiser on them. Just like skin, the older it is the dryer it becomes.

Have you tried M&S then baggying at night. My dry hair thanks me for it.

ETA:
I noticed you use a leave-in but not a specific moisturiser, you might want to invest on something that concentrates on that alone.

This could be a stupid question but what is M&S? I thought of baggying at night. I trimmed in December. I guess I figured the leave in would suffice? Maybe not :nono:

Hmm, in addition to the solutions mentioned above, you may want to PS with your ends tucked in more often. I had this problem when I would braid my hair at night, before I started twisting my braids into little buns to keep the ends covered. More PSing during the day (at least a few times a week) with ends tucked also helped.

Also, bantu knots can be a nightmare for ends if you aren't careful. Make sure not to make them too tight- it is too tight if your twisting is causing the hair to "buckle over" to form the knot, if that makes sense. I twist from the base, wrapping it around itself as I go. Make sure not to hold the ends and twist from there- total ends disaster!

Good luck!

first bolded: You probably need to clarify ... when my hair gets unruly/not responding to staples ... I need to clarify. When your hair is coated with crap it wont receive moisture as it should

second bolded: oily hair isnt necessarily moisturized hair. In general oils lubricate/seal, so you need a water based moisturizer to use under your oil.

cantu shea butter made my ends dry and crunchy BTW. though my relaxed hair and new growth loved it ... go figure.:ohwell:

Im natural for 2 years and am still dealing with dry ends occassionally

my routine is to spritz hair with aloe vera juice after washing (to close cuticles) then use a water based Leave In, then seal.

my ends are usually good as long as I keep the moistur up and give my hair a dose of protein once in a while.

SimJam,

I have been having issues with my ends too and I recently concluded that I needed a water based moisturizer. All the oil and conditioners in the world have not helped.

Can you recommend any?

My ends used to dry out super-fast too before I discovered the oil that *my* hair prefers to be sealed with- castor oil. As long as I moisturize beforehand and apply a bit to my ends, they can stay moisturized for up to a week if they're tucked and hidden, and up to 2 maybe 3 days if out (which is a lifetime for my naturally dry hair).

My hair literally laughs at lighter oils to seal - olive, sesame, safflower, jojoba, grapeseed...you name it, and I tried it and still ended up with dry hair. Castor oil is the only one that works for me.

I'd suggest you experiment with trying a heavier sealant- if castor oil isn't your thing, maybe a bit of shea butter, or a shea butter blend of some kind.

Honey01 right now Im liking Hair veda whipped creme ends hydration. i also like She Scents It coco creme leave in and Oyin hair dew.

I've seen ladies speak about shea moisture hair milk or something like that..

I just look for something that has water as the first ingredient along with glycerin (or another humectant) and oils. That what my hair likes

I used to have the exact same problem. Clarifying is a good idea.
The only thing that helped my dry ends was spritzing with water and then sealing with something heavy like shea butter or castor oil

Castor oil used to be my go to. I guess this would just be the result of being incredibly impatient and taking my braids out a week before school lets out and I go home to *all* of my natural products, I only have a fraction of them here. I will definitely clarify, and return to my Elasta QP like I know I should. Thanks guys!

Thank you very much!

I actually thought about starting a thread today on this after washing my hair today. Next month will make one year since my last relaxer. I'm dealing with the two different textures now and it's not easy. I just got my ends clipped two weeks ago and today they looked so dry. I am going to go back to baggying during the day b/c that did seem to help in addition to applying TIGI split end mender on them at night.
