Prepoo clogging drains?!?

Anyone else experience their shower drains constantly getting clogged ever since they started doing a prepoo with oil (I use olive oil)? It's getting quite annoying. Is this common?

It can be, depending on your drainage system. I used to clog my college dorm showers with my detangling and conditioning.

How much oil are you using? Are you combing in the shower as well?

Yes and that's why I realize pre pooing is not for me, it's just a extra step that causes tangles for me, I did it ones and never again

Yes! This is the main reason I've decided to stop prepooing. I have to Draino the tub after every pre-poo.

Interesting, my tub is ALWAYS getting clogged. But I don't prepoo with oil. I do mix my conditioners with oils though.

This is what I do also. And I constantly get clogs from it.

Yep, I noticed that between the hair (Now I stopped combing in the shower) and the oil, I was getting clogs. However, I was rather heavy handed with my oil rinse (it wasn't so much a prepoo issue) that was causing it.

I'll have to rememebr the boiling water trick

Mix baking soda with water and pour it down the drain
Pour a kettle of boiled water down the drain
Pour a liter bottle of coke or pepsi down the drain
Clean tub/shower with bleach

I have this issue on a regular basis. First it was oil and hair so I ordered pure lye. Now, I've stopped my shedding so I will give the boiling water trick a try. I heard of using baking soda but for some reason never tried it. They say some drain openers contain bleach. hmmm

I use a little under 1/4 cup. No, I don't comb in the shower but maybe I shed a lot and that is also contributing.

Maybe I'll try this next time. That stinks though that now I have to add this to the total time it takes to wash my hair on wash day.

First, get a drain cover for your shower that catches the hair and doesn't allow all of the shed hair to go down the drain. The longer your hair gets you really don't want all of that hair in your drain.

Second, get a bottle of Dawn, or Ajax with bleach or any dish detergent you would use to cut the grease on your dishes, you can just put a little of that down the drain before and after you do your hair and then run it through with hot water. It will help reduce the frequency you will need to use drano or other products. You can also use some left over shampoo you don't like.

Third, lighten up on the oil a bit. If its clogging up your drains regularly, then you may be too heavy handed. Your hair probably doesn't need heavy layers of oil for your prepoo to work.

Try using some baking soda and white vinegar regularly and you won't have clooged drains.

TruMe I didn't even consider you didn't have a drain cover. I have two and still have an issues so I can only imagine how bad your issue it without one. I bought one from Lowes for $2-3. The other is mesh and I got it from the dollar tree. Oddly enough, the dollar tree one works better. I clean both cover with shampoo and a relaxer brush

Ms. Tiki - Thanks for telling me where to get one. My drain is flush with the floor so I always have a hard time trying to find one that will fit on it and then I forget all over again to keep looking. I will check out the dollar tree this weekend. Yes, it is pretty bad.

This is an easy fix homegirl.

If you have a drain that has a strainer or stopper screwed in then remove it first.

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain.

Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar (white, acv, it doesn't matter)

Then pour in a pot of boiling water.

Keep your face away from the drain cause baking soda and vinegar sometimes have a caustic reaction together.

They sell the type you need at Bed, Bath and Beyond. They even sell some of them in the drug store type stores : Walgreen, CVS, etc. So I'm sure they would have them at Walmart.

If yours is flush you will need the one from Lowe's b/c it sits on top of the drain. The one from dollar tree sits down in the drain after you remove the cover. If you can get the cover off, the other might work. Don't know if you're handy or not
