I am new to LHCF and I am excited about my recent join. I am fighting for healthy hair and plan to have healthy hair and length retention by March 2012.

I have recently stopped allowing my stylist to do my hair because I was natural for 2 years and decided to get my hair relaxed. Considering that she does a great job on my daughter's natural hair and did an outstanding job on mine, I decided to allow her to relax it. The clients that I see that she does, relaxed or natural, come out with beautiful healthy hair.

My issue: The day that she did my relaxer was the day that I lost the majority of my hair. She burnt out my hair from the middle of my head all the way to my neck. I've since been doing it and have it has been growing BUT it is not retaining any moisture. :nono:

I've been reading through the previous discussion boards and have been taking note on what to purchase, but are there are 4 something women out there that has an issue with retaining moisture, please advise. I am at a lose for what to do. My hair is currently above EL due to having to cut it off since the majority was burned out.

I am starting my own healthy hair challenge but need a little bit of assistance in getting there. Thank you ladies! :kisses:

try buying some porosity control to help, your protein balance could also be effecting your hair's ability to retain moisture.

I went to Ulta because I actually read that on someone's post and the lady told me that she had never heard of it. Where can I get it?

ReignLocks, I wanted to offer my personal support. If you would like a hair buddy to help you along on your hair care journey, please let me know. I will PM you. :)

I grew my 4a/b hair from ear length to a little bit below Bra-strap Length with the help of my hair buddy and this board! :) I would love to return the favor.

I would LOVE for you to help me! My hair is in the worse condition that it has EVER been in my life. I've thankfully managed to get the burnt out hair to grow about 2 inches but it feels so brittle, coarse and unhealthy. Any help is greatly appreciated! THANK YOU so much!

i would recommend doing a protein treatment, then follow with a moisturizing treatment. i have been using Aphogee 2 min reconstructor weekly and i follow with Keracare Humteco i believe that is how you spell it. i roller set my hair weekly with small/medium(orange or green) rollers and wear a curly style during the week. i moisturize and seal my hair at night with Mizani Coconut souffle and seal with grapeseed oil on satin sponge rollers.

shortdub78 Thank you! I will add a protein treatment to my notes. I'm serious about this thang chile! I'm posting my SL hair by April! It is going to be a testimony!!!!

same thing sorta happened to me this past weekend. i got a touchup and i think she burned my hair a little when she curled it. so i applied the 2 min Aphogee in my hair, kept it in overnight, followed today with the keracare and rolled my hair back up. that's why i don't mess with heat. my hair was very dry when i got home and i was added all kinds of products to get it moisturized, so i decided to sacrifice the pretty style she gave me and conditioned my hair again.

I would also advise that you regularly clarify/chelate to remove any product build up and/or mineral deposits that may be preventing the hair from retaining moisture.

And, welcome to LHCF!

I also agree with porosity control. When I relaxed last year I had a porosity problem, I wasn't retaining moisture. So I washed with porosity control shampoo, did a protein tx with nexxus emergencee for an hour with heat, then mixed ntm deep conditioner, olive and coconut oils, and porosity control conditioner together for an overnight moisturizing dc. Worked like a charm.

OK ladies, just got some Alphogee 2 step protein treatment and Porosity control. Getting it in tonight! Can't wait to get home.
BTW... Just downloaded the app.... Lookout healthy hair!

http://www.longhaircareforum.com/member.php?u=4198ReignLocks ----You need to understand why your hair is dry before treating it without just cause.

Do you have high or low porosity? Porosity control is great if you have high porosity. PC helps the cuticles to close which is good for high porosity but it is not so great for low porosity hair (I have low porosity) where the cuticles are already closed. PC just closes them tighter making it even harder for moisture to sink into your strands.

Is your protein/moisture balanced? Being imbalanced will cause moisture retention issues. Aphogee 2 step is a hard core protein. Are you aware of this and does your hair easily protein overload? Perhaps a milder protein is what your hair needs. I'd start mild and work my way up to hard core if required.

Have product buildup? Products can make the hair feel and/or appear dry. Perhaps it is not a protein and/or porosity issue.

I just don't want you chasing protein and protein overload and/or chasing porosity when neither may be the issue.

I used to have the same problem until I switched to lye about a year ago. I know some say lye is not good, but I think the saying is no-lye is better on your scalp, but lye is better for your hair. I was using ORS no-lye and even though I chelated, daily moisture and had prot/moist balance, my hair was still dry. I stretched for as long as I could and then I switched to lye. I haven't looked back! Today I used Elasta QP Soy Oyl with lye and I'm keeping this one. It was better than ORS lye.

My scalp doesn't burn and I went from chin length to nearly APL. I also started henna treatments around the same time because lye users tend to need more protein. The last recipe had coconut milk and coconut oil. Awweesomme!!

There's a lot of helpful info on here, so pace yourself and feel free to ask questions :yep: And don't jump on every bandwagon you read! It'll get expensive (in time and money) and you'll become frustrated when it doesn't work.

divachyk I feel like a school kid because I want to learn so much about my hair and when people give me advice, I'm all over it. To my demise and your advise, I really need to do my research and look into products before jumping on them. I thought that Porosity Control was to make your strands more porous based on what I read on here and the advice from the lady at Sallys. She also told me to get the Aphogee 2 step......Ugh. I'm still learning and thanks to the forum, I can learn from others whether it is good advice or bad.

How do I figure out if my hair is porous or just my products. I actually don't put much on my hair but Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner, Cholesterol for DC, IC Overnight oil and Olive Oil creme. I just recently purchased oils for my hair but prior to that, those items were what I used. When it comes to the protein, I don't have a clue where to start on knowing if I actually need it. Due to my work load, I was unable to do my hair yesterday plus I realized that I need to relax after looking at my roots.

Please advice when you can. Thank you for your time!

Please tell me what chelating is? I've been told to do that but have no clue what it is or if I need to. I definitely have to pace myself because I find myself getting overly excited over every piece of advice someone gives me instead of taking the time to see if it is beneficial to me. Thanks to divachyk I am slowing down with that.

You all have been so helpful and so awesome. I will post some pictures of my hair. I wish that I would have taken pics when my hair got burned out but it has definitely come a long way. :yep:

Chelating shampoos are a type of clarifying shampoo that removes mineral deposits from the hair. Chelating is especially important for those who use no-lye relaxers, have hard water or swim often. Organic Root Stimulator's Creamy Aloe Shampoo is a chelating shampoo i've used in the past, but there are other brands that make chelating shampoos as well.

Before buying more products, please answer these questions:

1. What is your current regimen? Include all products (I see you're using Tea Tree products, but what brands?), washing and conditioning schedule, as well as your daily hairstyles.
2. Do a porosity test on your shed strands. Report results.
3. When was that last relaxer?

1. I was not really on a personal routine. I went to the salon every two weeks but since she burned my hair out I've bought a few things and have stopped using a few as well. Currently I have been consistently using Olive Oil hair care products. I used the shampoo, conditioner and creme. As of late, my hair has become excessively brittle and dry. Based on reading through the forums, I've since purchased Joico Smooth Care shampoo and condish, Joico K-pak as well as an array of oils. I currently shampoo and dc weekly. I have to add some form of moisture twice a day due to dryness.

2. I know that this may sound crazy but I do not know how to do a porosity test.

3. My last relaxer was about 11 weeks ago

Does this process make the hair dry?
