I think I would like to do some braids as a protective style on my natural 4a hair. Only problem is that I live in an area that is very short on black stylists or briaders (hence one of the reasons I went natural after moving here).

So I'd like to try doing some braids myself. I'd like something that is not too small and not going to take forever to put in. I'm only looking to leave them in 2-4 weeks at a time and just want them to come below my own hair which is almost APL when stretched.

Can someone suggest some tips or a site with info and styles for do it yourself'ers.

Not sure what kind of hair to use, human, synthetic, brand, where to order...

thanks for any suggestions

@lwilliams1922 - YOU-TUBE. It's the best place to learn. If you give me a few hours (got get off work) I will link a video. It's a young man doing his own kinky-twists. I had the basics down, but the most important thing he does, that I found lacking in other vids, is how to start the extension, and get it close to the scalp. For some reason I could not get it til I saw this vid.

So if you're looking for extensions, let me know, I'll send the link.

Or just do twists with your natural hair. Sounds like you have the length for it. Again, You-tube is your friend.:yep:

I'd love the link.

I'm leaning toward poetic justice look.

Still not sure on where to order the hair and what to look for.

thanks!

You can use Kanekalon hair (synthetic) for those kind of braids.:yep:

You can also find it on Amazon.com, Superbeautydepot.com, and a few others. I would suggest getting at least 5-7 packs of hair (You may not even need all of that but I would rather have more instead of not enough).

Hope this helps!

lwilliams1922 - Didn't have a chance to get on computer last nite, and at work now. But here is the google link to the vid. It's the last one on the page for AfricanHairGod:

Also see about crown & glory: http://www.growafrohairlong.com/c_and_g.html.

In the past I never soaked my hair, and it itched til I took it out! Recently I did take the extra step to soak, and no itchies. Everyone is different, but it doesn't hurt to do as a precaution.
