I thinking about streaking my hair this color:

I have never dyed my hair before, expect henna - I want to change my look a bit.

Does anyone know of a ntural hair dye I could use that is actually good for my hair and wont cause damage? kind of like henna?

Also is is safe to use henna over other hair dyes without damage?

If there was I think most people would use that instead.

I don't think that product you are looking for is out there.

But using honey/agave nectar and lime and a lot of sun will lighten your hair. But the problem with that is it will take some time.

Yeah, I thought there was something like that out there, I guess not.

Is there one that is at least less damaging?
Do ALL hair dyes damage hair?

Citrus juice can work if you use it over several weeks and have lots of extended exposure to sunlight. It also depends on your natural hair color. My own hair is deep black and it lightens to red, not to brown or blonde.

Henna is red on black or dark brown hair. If you had very light hair then a light henna treatment could come out very pale orange - i.e. close enough to gold. All commercial hair dyes are potential damaging but a few people figure the right combo of conditioners , etc., so they can maintain colored hair with few problems.

For that golden brown with blonde/bronze, there is nothing natural nor healthy for the hair really. I went that way last year (February 2010). My hair finally chucked me the deuces in March 2011 and began to break off horribly from the bleach (and this was done at a professional salon with a colorist).

^^^ werd! unless your hair is brown to begin with there's no natural way to lift colour. going from brown to blonde you might be able to do it w/out bleach but from black to blonde will be w/ the help of some very not natural chemicals.

you gots ta make a decision OP: either you're ready for the major work you need to do to maintain hair after the dye job or you want to remain safe; there's no in between w/ colour like this. if you choose to do it "The Natural Hair Project" (i can NEVER remember her name :perplexed) can help i'm sure. if someone knows who i'm talking about pls tag her or post her tips on caring for coloured hair...

Thanks ladies!

Its not worth it, NOPE, I already had a set back which Im recovering from.

What about temporary spray on colors, in a can, does such exist?

Im so sorry about this, really I am, I truly hope things work out.

Thanks for sharing!

The whole lemon juice thing does work on certain hair types and colors. My hair is porous and does have natural sun highlights, though just a shade or two and it did work, but it is very drying even diluted when you leave it in your hair for as long as you need to lighten it.

My hair never did well with lifting the color. Eventually each piece that I had highlighted (either professionally or at home with lemons) broke off.

hmmm...I'm just thinking about leaving this hair color thing alone for good, even the spray on kind, it sucks because I really wanted to change my look a bit, try something new but I cant afford to loose any hair.

janet has amazing color success. She has light brown hair with blonde streaks. Plus, she's natural if i'm not mistaken. I would ask her how she maintains healthy hair while coloring.

BlackMasterPiecedyed her hair some time ago and i know she researched alot(not with a natural dye)

snillohssstalked me off the hair dye i was ready to jump right on in  but it just sounds like too much maintenance i think if your high maintenance with your hair it prob wont be a big deal though im as lazy as they come:look:

Bump!!
I want some sort of red colour on my hair. If I was to henna it first then put a red rinse over it would that work to brighten the colour without damaging my hair?

Definitely no natural products out there :-(.

However, if you want to add highlights this color use Loreal Excellence Cremelights Highlighting kit. It is not damaging at all, is ammonia free, and will definitely lift color. I colored the front section of my hair with this last year and had golden-blondish-brown colored streaks in my hair. How light it gets, depends on how long you leave it on.

If you're not a big, do-it-yourselfer though, I would go to professional colorist who understands African American hair.

Also, I was always told henna and permanent dyes are not interchangeable. It's kind of like switching between no-lye and lye relaxers. Some people can do it and not get breakage, and others absolutely can not. I would do one or the other to be on the safe side, particularly if you're lifting color to the level you showed in the picture.

Henna fill in the gaps with red pigment, it does not lift color. Color does not lift color.

If you use henna, your hair may have a slight reddish tint. If you want true red, you'll have to use something to lift the blue pigment out of your natural hair like hydrogen peroxide or ammonia.
