Rollers in Public

If I see a clean women with a neat, well done roller set (and I have) I think to myself, "That's a woman who takes care of her hair. No flatiron, weave, wig or blowfryer for you huh? I wonder how long her hair is?", etc. But then I'm an LHCF'er...

^^ What if she has roller set extensions?? I don't roller set but if I did I'd plan ahead and not leave the house till I was done. I will throw on a weave cap and a head wrap if I have an unfinished braid or cornrow style I'm working on - but that's not a jump up and run thing per se it's just that sometimes I plan to do them in short sessions over the course of 2-3 days.

I don't care about rollers. I'll rock 'em if I don't feel like taking them out. I wash my hair in about 15 small ponytails and once I'll HAD to go to the store to get a product I ran out of. I didn't want to do it but I went out with part of my hair flat ironed and the rest in ponytails. Picture 12 months post wet hair in that condition. A lady in the parking lot gave me a WICKED side eye.:look:

I have no limitations. If my head is full of rollers and I have to make a trip to the grocery store or to the pharmacy- then so be it. I have way too much confidence to give a fig about somebody giving me the side eye because what I choose to wear on top of my God given head.

This is funny when I was a kid my mother would always eye-roll the sistas with curlers in their hair. It really got on her nerves if the rollers were different colors, and not neatly placed in. So if I want to stay in the WILL I can't wear rollers in public.

My momma wouldn't have any of this. I'm too scared she would find out somehow and be at my door when I get back home and personally snack my rollers out (she's gangsta). And she would die twice if I ever wore bonnets or doo rags out in public. She believes in a lady being presentable at all times. If not for her.... I'd be the tackiest errand runner in town.:ohwell:

See, I think it may be an age thing. I find it more acceptable for an older woman to step out in rollers because she don't give a...I also think it depends on where you see the rollers. Like if she's sitting out on her porch or visiting the neighbors because she's trying to airdry, that's cool. Even grocery shopping. In my opinion, so long as it ain't the club, do you. I just know that for me personally it's a no-go. I stepped outside of the salon with rollers once as a teen and my self-esteem still hasn't recovered.

I find it funny how many of us wouldn't wear rollers in public but have no problem wearing a wrap with bobby pins from the dominican salon. That's not a hairstyle, it's a set, just like rollers. Women may not like the rollers, but men don't like the wrap, because most of them don't understand that it's NOT A STYLE. I wonder why so many of us see them as being different.

I never liked that wrapped hair(scarf wrapped in a circle then tied in a small knot in front)--as if going to bed in out in public. I mean put on a nice pretty scarf over it, to cover that at least, but nooooo they have to go out with the aunt Jemima gettin' her hair did look.

I also believe there are certain feminine habits that should be kept as a mystery. Rollers and the 21st cen. Jemima-do, kills that air of mystery about a woman.

This is exactly how I feel. A lil off topic, but this is why I want a huge house. I want it to be years into my marriage before my husband ever sees me get done up. I'll get dressed in the west wing. Meet me in the great hall.

JeterCrazed Totally with you on that. This is why I do my hair at unearthly hrs lol. I wish I had my own huge, well air conditioned vanity room equipped with a pibbs, mirrors, dressers for hair and makeup. A dream lol.

How could I forget lol. I used to lock plus secure the bedroom door with a cane between the wall and door lol (it worked efficiently as a lock by itself) when I did my hair. Now we have no lock on the door which sucks. I just have to do my hair when my husband is asleep lol. I miss having two bedrooms, I should have taken better advantage of the unused bedroom.

as a kid my rollers took all weekend to air dry and i would be out on my big wheel or bike all weekend with those bad boys in....

so now as an adult, i'll do it if i have to. but usually its to sallys so that doesnt count in my mind. but once i had to rush my dog to the er vet and i did it with a head full of rollers and no scarf.... so, yeah

This is how my mom and most of my female relatives are. Back in their day, which was the 40s, 50s and 60s, you never went outside with rollers in your hair. I would never do it since I was raised by women who frown upon this. Black American women (I can't speak for other cultures) never used to do this but I realize times are indeed changing for the worse.

I have. If it's a nice day out and I must do this I make sure to wear my shades and silk scarf, it makes me feel glamorous.

If I have to run a quick errand, I will and have in a heartbeat. When my husband and I were dating, I picked him up from the airport with a few rollers and a scarf. We were going out later and I wasn't going to jeapordize my going out "do" to look good for a quick errand. Hubby didn't care. Sometimes I will even go to work with a scarf and comb my hair when I get to work. I could care less what Pookie on the Metro thinks about me.

Recently I saw a woman wearing rollers while shopping for clothes at Sears. Big blue rollers. I'm not sure if she was getting her hair done at one of the salons in the mall. That's totally fine with me but I wouldn't do that. I might run into a co-worker or a former classmate or something.

The worst I've done in public is sloppy-looking twists with a kerchief or a scarf headband, but you will never see me in public with any type of rollers in my hair.

When I had a relaxer I did roller sets, but the only place I went was my backyard. Once. If neighbors looked out of their window and saw me that's fine. I always planned ahead of time to make sure I could wash, roll, dry and style my hair before leaving home.

A wrap with bobby pins is something else I wouldn't wear in public.

Nothing to add, but I saw a woman walking into a community college with flexirods in her hair. I guess she was determined to go register no matter what.

Rollers No.. Pincurls or a wrap YES.... I'm from NYC... And you'll see a lot of girls doing this. Mainly younger like mid twenties

Compared to most answers from forum firiends, I am afraid I have a different opinion.
When started to rollerset again after my marriage, I was realy shy and yes I was trying to hide from my husband and also I would not have gone out in the stret in rollers
But step by step I have changed my mind
First with my husband: I was doing this to get my hair as he loved it, so no reason to hide and surprisingly he was very happy not only to see me behaing naturally, but also offered to help and this is really a plus when you have waist long hair
Second wit the outside world: I do no hesitate to go to the supermarket with my big rollerset. At the beginning, it was creating some surprise to people passing by, but it was more sympathy than anything else (" the poor girl, with all these rollers"). I was stopped by numerous old ladies (who practiced rollersetting when younger) and also by young girls (which look amazed and ready to try). Cashiers in the supermarket know me well now and I had even some friendly discusions on the benfits of rollersetting. At the beginning, I was putting a scarf, but ultimately it was making the rollerset even bigger, so I now simply go out with the rollers an the hairnet
Voila

Back when I used to go to Dominican Salons in NY, sometimes I would leave the chair with my rollers in to get something to drink across the street or something. Other than that hell no. That really looks ghetto. I've seen black girls around my area even go to the mall with rollers in. Just a hot mess.
