Natural hair & water only washing?

I have rinse my hair with just water everyday but not sure like you said how it would work with thicker hair. if you use oils on your hair you know it will not wash the oils away but I had no problem washing out other things I used. I was doing it because I wanted to keep the oil on my hair because I was hiding my hair for a while so it didn't matter. but if I did it on a regular basis and wanted to wear my curls I could not use any oil at all on my hair.

oh forgot to add I lasted 15 days before I had to wash with shampoo and then I started all over again.

Before people used soap they used plain water. When people didn't have access to soap they used plain water (and still do of course). I couldn't imagine submerging yourself in water, with for instance sweaty armpits, and still come up smelly and dirty. Water does wonders that many are not aware of apparently. Water is capable of cleansing and washing away dirt. I bet washing in a spring would be the most refreshing and cleansing experience one could have. We have become real germaphobes; and reliant on manmade products for too much. I have seen women on other hair boards who successfully just do water rinses. I found this during my research on oil cleansing/washing. There are women out there successfully washing w/things other than the "trusty" shampoo.

I've never known water alone to get rid of funk. I've had the unpleasure of smelling someone who has just "showered". He got wet but he obviously skipped some places :look:

Hard water and a dirty rag, hmph, you'll never get clean (and who knows whether he even got in??). But like I said, were overly reliant on commercial products w/chemicals & hormones. I'm interested to see those who cleanse on a more natural route.

He got in. He was in there when we arrived. I don't know what type of water he used but I don't imagine filtered water alone getting rid of funk either. I can't use harsh soaps because I have sensitive skin but I do need some sort of cleansing agent.

I assume this wouldn't work if you have to moisturize and seal your hair daily. :nono:

@ the bold, Tiye, I did once: rinse my hair with just water after coming out of the pool. :nono: I had to shave my hair off to a fade because chlorine did a number on my hair. Never again.

I think even people wearing braids after a while use witch hazel or some dry shampoo coz hair can get funky.

I agree with the rest of your post.

My hair turned this horrible color of rust red and eventually broke off like crazy. No swim cap + chlorine + sun + no shampoo = broken, dry, damaged hair.

I have even seen a video of Mr kravitz washing his hair with aloe vera so yeah i just dont think its needed

Interesting, some old tribes in South America clean their hair with aloe vera too, just like that. They massage the gel from the leaves, comb and rinse in a clean river (or so I have been told by a friend who has seen it).

(edit: this was maaaany years ago, I wonder if it still works for them since I cannot think of any possible clean river today )

One thing is for sure: hard water sticks to my sebum like crazy.
Maybe dissolving the sebum with an oil massage, and using filtered water...?

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't try it.
I've heard of people with naturally straight hair doing this.
Like other said it would only work well if you use no hair products, and if you have hard water then getting a water filter would be effective.
They have a "water only" thread on another forum that you could check out!
