Questions for my Natural Sistas from a Relaxed Sista

Deep Thinker
Please don't stone me.

I'm relaxed and I want to say more power to all the natural sistas here. I really don't think I could do it because my face seems to only fit a straighter style.

I, like many others I'm sure, thought about going natural a few times. But I like to wear my hair straight because I think it fits my face best. Here is what brought me to post this. I'm only about 7 wks post and my roots are puffy as heck and I called myself doing a rod set. When I finger styled the curls I just said meh, it's okay and ended up pulling it back into a loose bun. It was just KINDA cute.

I came to work and by the time I got to my desk it looked like I had an afro and it was a horrible mess. I just went in the ladies room to wet it to slick it down into a neater bun as best I could because I hated the way it looked.

What I really want to know is, what do you do when you go out dancing or something if you are natural and like to wear your hair straight? My hair is a mess after dancing and I'm relaxed so I couldn't imagine if I were natural.

TIA!!

I never wear my hair straight when I know I'm about to sweat profusely. But the great thing about being natural is that if my hair poofs up I can just pour some water on my head (I've done this before.. dont judge me...) and I have an instant cute style.

Okay that makes sense then. Lol about the water. But if it works then oh well.

Thanks!

I'm just curious as to how your hair looked like an afro when you are only 7 weeks post. Exactly how much new growth do you have after 7 weeks?

Exactly. Same here.

Yea, same here. Just in case, I usually have a nice headband (or ponytail elastic) stashed away somewhere to keep the hair off my face.

Almost any hair style can be turned into a cute puff type style in an instant.

If I'm going out I'll style my hair in a way that looks better as it poofs (braid or twist outs). I keep bobby pins, a headband, and a ponytail holder with me most of the time anyway, so if I need to put it up I can.

I had a style similar to the one in my siggie and I was out at Bob Marley's which is an outdoor club. My hair expanded as the night went on and a dude who tried to dance with me said my hair was going in his eyes, nose, mouth, etc... I told him to move along then.

If it puffs up I just roll with it. When I had a relaxer and "needed" a touchup, my hair looked a mess in the type of situations you are talking about (club, high humidity situations, etc.

However since all of my hair is now natural, it looks kinda purposeful if that makes sense- huge natural roots on straight, relaxed ends of course is a mess vs huge natural hair, where all of it poofs up.

OP, I know this isn't exactly the answer to your question, but in reference to your comment about only straight styles fitting your face...think to yourself, why do you feel that way?

I felt that way before I went natural and actually, upon deciding to transition, told myself that I would wear my hair straight most of the time. Now, when I have straight hair, it feels so alien. It almost looks like it's not supposed to be on my head.

I think your mind's eye just becomes accustomed to looking a certain way and a major change is just rejected.

I'm sorry you had trouble with your hair going 'poof'. I personally put my hair in 3-4 tight buns when I know I will be sweating. I also use products with lots of silicones (I am normally silicone free)

Its not just because of the NG looking puffy, the whole thing was a mess. But mainly because it wasnt laying closer to my scalp as usual in my buns. The afro is an exaggeration lol.

Thanks!

good ideas. I guess the longer your hair the better it looks tussled. At least with me i'd think.

Thanks!

lol at dude. No he didnt. And so what if it was.

I guess its easier if u have enough hair to put up too where it still looks cute.

Thanks!

I almost never wear my hair straight, but when my style gets crazy, I have bobby pins at the ready!

Sounds like all agree to be prepared with hair supplies.

Thanks!

True, all natural probably is much better look than scraggly ends hanging onto the poof lol.

Thanks!

i just feel like my forehead is huge and i like a bang to cover it. I know if it were much longer i probably wouldnr care. I always picture me running out of the rain if i were natural. But i guess you never know.

Thanks!

All I know is a little poof with natural hair makes my hair look Fuller and sometimes better versus relaxed hair touch up madness. If I was going out in humid hot environments then I'm wearing braid outs that way if and when my hair puffs all I need to do is put it in a puff. I think everything I can say has already been mentioned. That's all I got.

I wish you could see my forehead. In high school my friend put his whole palm over my forehead and exclaimed, "Wow! Her forehead is bigger than my whole palm!!" It was, by a good inch. I could give Tyra a run for her money any day of the week. People assume I have a receding hair line because it starts so far back; I've showed people my first grade pictures (before relaxer) to prove that no, my forehead is just really that big, always has been :lachen:!

So I feel you, and when I first transitioned I too thought that only straight styles looked good on me. I quickly got used to having massive hair, and now straight styles look weird to me.

If I'm going out with straight hair I try to either (a) put my hair up, in a bun or something, that won't frizz immediately, or (b) put some sort of curl in the hair, whether via a big braid out for loose waves or something like that, so when it frizzes it doesn't look so bad. I keep a flexi-8 or pins on hand so I can do a quick twist-up if staying down won't work for me.

I never straighten my hair, but one style I like when I need a similar style are braid and twist outs. To keep from look a hot mess at the end of the day or night, I set my hair with a medium hold gel (love Ecostyler Blue with hold #5) with a light oil. It gives me good staying power without drying my hair and it keeps my waves in check - sweat or no sweat.
