Let these pitchas serve as a warning about BKT

Other people had such great results why not me  I also did not really notice because in the summer I wear a puff but it was all so gradual

I didn't have such a great reaction but I tested my hair, only putting it on my bangs....and I waited (we're not talking days, we're talking a while) as I observed the changes. As my bangs split, I chopped off the damage. It just didn't work for me. I found more splits, etc. In the thread some ladies had a theory that it was too much protein (as I use avocado conditioner, etc)...and they could be right but I didn't care to try to find out. As I have bangs, I've cut them all year to keep the length and basically as I cut out my hair (until it was all gone), I cut out the damage and moved on. I don't want to rag on it though because tons of people had success but I think it's important to do a test.

I realize this is hindsight but for others trying it, perhaps it serves as a warning to test first.

Good idea, we test everything else first: hair color, henna, carpet cleaner. It even says to test febreez*(sp).

I feel your pain girl! It happen to me too and a year and 8 months later i'm just starting to recover. I slowly cut all of the bkt out of my hair. i believe that it does not wear off at least in my case. I don't want to jack your thread but if you want me to post my pics i will! If I can remember how to post pics:lol:.

And to think the stylist at the salon where I get my hair cut stays trying to get me to try that stuff. I am sooooo glad I always said no. Sorry for your setback OP.

Hi, I am so sorry about your hair :nono: Please don't worry. We will grow our hair together to long, healthy lengths again.

I noticed that you said that you were misled to believe that BKT was not advertised as a chemical. I hope that more people learn from this. I know that a lot of people are using this as an alternative to relaxing but please, everyone, do 24-hour skin patch and/or strand test on all new products. One bad day at the salon just isn't worth all our hair going down the drain.

OP, what regimen will you use to get your hair back in shape?

Beside getting it cut, I have no idea what I am going to do with it. I may just get a weave but I have not had one in years. Also if anybody wants to post ANY tips I am open to them. I think I just have sensitive skin. But what's weird is I have done everything under the sun to my hair jerri curls, perms, and color and never has it been this bad. I also figured getting it done at a salon I would be ok.

what about a full wig? you can braid your hair underneath and baby it. weaves can cause you to use too much heat on the areas left out to cover the weft. sometimes with weaves peoples hair thin out no matter how much they care for it.

So sorry this happened to you. I had a very similar reaction to relaxers. It was itching like crazy and falling out, I just chose to big chop. I guess for me and you chemicals may not be a good thing

I am sorry this happened to you. I had considered trying it a few times but kept chickening out. I have a stylist friend who refuses to do them in his shop. I hope your rebound is quick.

I had a BKT done in Sept 2010 and it came out fine. After I wore it straight for a week or so (I did it for my bday), I didn't experience any ill effects..I washed my hair (I was missing my coils!---I never wear my hair straight more than a week or so), started wearing twists/updos again....My coils were more loose and detangling was easier...My hair strands seemed thicker and more protected-from the extra layer of keratin---I love it and I am going to get another one again in the fall.....

I guess its not for everyone...But I am soooo thankful!
So sorry kinchen!

sad this happened to you. i noticed that alot of bkt horror stories happen in a salon. i have never had an issue with mine and they all reverted with a few months time.

That's exactly why I made this thread everybody was having great results. If anyone is Thinking about it do a test run. I wish I had.  I have been looking at wigs online but I think I have to touch them in person before I buy one.

Angelicus...you hit it on the head!!!!! I think that's the mistake people make....Its not a relaxer or relaxer substitute....Its a chemical/heat process...it makes the hair shaft thicker! ....The process involves heat, because you have to have heat to bond the keratin to the hair...so you get a thicker (stronger) hair strand....

You are not by any means supposed to straighten the hair daily, and once you wash it, your hair reverts back to its original state...I wore my hair straight a week after I got the BKT, and then washed after that, and my hair was back to its natural 4AB/3C state....the difference is I had less ssk, easier detangling...I think it made my hair have more slip....I loved it...The downside was that my hair when worn in twists wasn't as thick in its natural state...Thats good if you're a "straight natural---but bad if you're like me and you LOVE the naps!!!...So this fall I'm using a formaldehyde-free, lower strength version....But my hair is back at BSL cause I trimmed it in March....The one I plan to use this time won't last as long (wears off after 3 mos vs. 6+ mos with a full strength one that has the standard 1-3% formaldehyde)

Thats all the BKT is....its not a chemical straightener....

It loosens...but it DOES not BREAK the bonds that make hair coily....Sodium Hydroxide (in relaxers) is a strong base....and it permanantly breaks those bonds--i.e. "Relaxing" the hair....so they are totally different...You MUST maintain a low-heat, low-manipulation regimen that balances protein and Moisture, as well as maintain regular trims....Thats what I did! Plus I got my BKT done by a friend at her house who'd done a whole bunch of other ladies BKT...and they all were transitioning to natural (all natural now)....and their hair has thrived!!!!
Once again OP...so sorry you had a horrible experience....

luckiestdestiny is avocado considered a protein? thanks....

so sorry to hear about this, OP!! setbacks are a b*aaaaaaatch! hang in there - you be back with fuller sexy hair in no time! :yep:

I consider it more moisturizing but it does have light protein properties yes! I thought of it as more moisturizing than anything else until that point. BUT I have always had strong hair with it. One of my standbys is sceshentit's avocado conditioner (and also silk element s but let's stick to the avocado one)...and my hair usually doe s not like (or need) a lot of protein. So it appears the avocado (which my hair loves) is just enough with a ton more moisturizing properties to combat any of the protein side effects.
