What common methods/products have you seen amongst longer haired members?

shrinkage.
I get disappointed picking a thread that applies to me and all the responses are widely varied. I know everything ain't for everyone yadda yadda but have you noticed anything that seems common when the hair is longest?

I think, as much as it is counter-intuitive to a lot of reggie discussions here, that longer haired members don't shampoo/cowash very frequently.

YEP the old creme of nature & Keracare long haired women on here seem to frequently suggest keeping those on hand also they bun and co wash.

Yup

they dont DC (very often)
They dont pre-poo
They apply moisture to their hair frequently

Although my hair is barely past SL I have adopted many of their techniques and my hair is doing just fine. I was doing most of these things pre- lhcf and thought since it worked then it should work now.

The only missing piece btwn then and now was the moisture protein balance and keeping my ends moisturized. I am much happier now.

From what I've seen, they keep it pretty simple (no vitamins, growth aids, etc.)

They lightly moisturize and oil their hair daily, go years without using direct heat and bun 25/8. Yes, 25/8.

I would have to disagree with the DC comment, I have seen many long haired women on this site as well as youtube that DC once a week which I consider often but everything else seems right... LOTS and LOTS of moisture.
But it really depends on your hair really!

just my opinion! :look:

I also believe bunning isnt ALWAYS necessary.
I mean im sure its great for your hair but... I have grown my hair from BC to shoulder length with no bunning (unless my hair was a mess and I am in a hurry).

I feel you really should enjoy and style your hair as you please of course with little to no heat (if you like buns then great!!!) but why hide that beautiful hair all day everyday, thats no fun to me.

JUST A THOUGHT!

^^^ that's cool and all, but i guess what the OP was trying to discuss were methods that LHCF long hair members (past BSL-Hip Length) use. a lot of them don't wear their hair out and they do keep it in a bun the majority of the time.

Nope. We had a thread on here, maybe last year, when all the old head/WL ladies stated they almost NEVER DC.

As the others have stated, bunning 25/8 and low heat reggies.

I've noticed their regi's are very simple 2 to 4 steps max and they use very few products and they keep their styling simple. They figured out what works for them and just do that.

@ SL your hair is still new and often not long enough to rub against clothing.

you may not sing the same song once that APL/BSL point hits and longer

the use of natural oils.
natural or if the relax they stretch
low to no heat use.
protective or low manipulation techniques

I notice the styling seems to be fairly simple.

oils are used alot on the ends.... I now see the wisdom in this.

and I noticed they dont DC as much or use a lot of heat as others mentioned

I guess I would be an exception (if I ever make it to my hip) because if I don't DC weekly, my hair feels like straw and breaks easier.

....okay well I follow a couple of girls on youtube with long hair that I have specifically gotten tips from about Deep conditioning and baggy methods.

not all long haired ladies are the same.

^^I'm with you on this one greenandchic! I actually credit the loads of moisture I've learned to inject into my strands (via weekly DCs and frequent CWs) for much of my retention.

Now, granted, I do both of the above while in cornrows so I'm limiting manipulation....but still. I can't imagine my retention would be where it is if I hadn't been on top of my DCs especially.

I wonder what are the most popular moisturizers used and DC products? I heard Kenra and Keracare being a few popular ones if I'm not mistaken

Definitely keep it simple in PSs. I also notice that many only use few products; for example, keracare to poo, silicon mix to dc and Castor to seal. The few that do use a variety of products seem to use a variety of the same type of products; for example, oil but different types (sweet almond, hemp, WGO).

I could be mistaken, but I noticed a lot of women with long hair don't use gels. I use them, but only rarely and if I know I'm going to shampoo later in the day or the next morning.

Well I never said that now did I?

I stated the results of a past thread about the reggies of long haired members of LHCF. After all, isn't that what the OP asked for? I was just confirming what Myjourney2009 was saying, that most of the long haired members on this site have stated on several occasions that they do not DC.

Whatever works for you. After I read that last year I stopped DCing and my hair has retained just fine. Whatever gets you to your goal is what's important. :yep:

Low manipulation (less combing and brushing)
PS- Bunning or wearing wigs at least 75 percent of the time)
Decreasing or completely stopping activities that may cause damage (like using relaxers, heat, hair coloring)
They seem to trim less than the average person
Moisturizing

I've gone months without DCing. I could never get away with going months sans moisturizing.

Commonalities of longhairs:
Low heat/ no heat.
Protective styles most of the time.
Moisturizing regularly.

I felt DC'ing for myself was completely unnecessary sometime early this year.

If I do DC it's for 15-20 max with heat because my conditioner does better. Its not often though. Its only when I feel like using that specific conditioner

YUP!!!

I felt that since I moisturize fairly often that DC'ing was just a waste of time.

... and if they do its not often. Mskibibi comes to mind. She washes and DC's 2x a month.
