I remember once referring to African American hair as tightly curled hair to a white stylist because so many sistas call their coils/kinks curly and I remember how he corrected me REAL FAST...........No you guys have coils he said. I thought, daaaaaag my bad. Coils are actually just tighter curls but good grief if you wanna trip like that.

:huh: What a moron! :lachen::lachen::lachen:Curls come in all sizes and they all look like coils. He too has coils. :lol: I suppose if you asked him how he'd define coils, he'd say something like "coils are small curls". :lachen:

ETA: This is another case of trying to complicate, differentiate stuff unnecessarily. I suppose OP was just curious, and it's an interesting experiment to see how everyone views stuff.

Looks curly to me. No quibbles here if you want to call it something else.

Indeed :yep:, for a rose by any name will still smell sweet. Likewise, a strand that forms the shape of a coil by any name will still be curly.

@Lynnerie, I totally get what you're saying and agree :yep:, but if I may, I'd like to elaborate in case anyone's confused like my sister the lurker.:look:

That statement is true only on hair forums where,
coily = kinky = small curls
(I say only on hair forums because I don't think folks on the outside would understand coily like we do; I don't even know if it's really a word outside of forums. I think hair folks made it up--for some weird reason. :lol: )

To put Lynnerie's statement another way that would also hold true outside hair boards:
"All kinky hair (ie hair made of small curls/coils) is curly hair (because its strands have a shape that looks like a coil) but not all curly hair (ie hair that coils) is kinky (ie made of small curls). (Some curly hair has curls too big to be called "small" or referred to as kinky.)
ETA: Chart-wise, see attachment.

Great explanation.

Exactly to the bolded. I was just curious how everyone sees it. Some people on hairboards call their hair kinky, coily, or curly or some kind of variation of those words. I wanted to know how posters, personally, distinguish one from the other. IRL, people don't use those words. For folks, IRL, it's either curly or it's not.

totally agree with the red:yep::yep:

i consider my hair to be kinky and curly. i dont really consider it coily because i dont think my curls are the same as coils. it doesnt curl that tightly. fyi i consider "kinky" to be related to texture and not to curl/coil at all. to me "afro textured hair" = kinky.

i think most people irl who are completely and happily oblivious to the hair universe online, instead of going with "coily" will just go with "nappy".

mischka, not considering it coily is not a bad thing at all. But for what it's worth, or in case anyone cares, I just wanted to mention that coils don't have to be tight. These phone cords are all coils:

Heavy/coarse strands that are also long will probably resemble the coil to the right (image below) or the one at the bottom (image above) because gravity's pull will open up the strands. While fine, short strands, that gravity has little effect on, will probably resemble the coil to the left in the image below and the one at the top in the image above:
