Straight & Natural + humidity =??

I live in south FL. I can't wear my hair bone straight in the summer. Yesterday I wore it blown out and flat ironed and it was very bushy after just a few moments in the heat. I say if you want your hair straight most of the time you should relax or heat train.

Bushy after only a just a few moments? You mean I doesn't even last hours???

Please look into steam treatments. It helps condition your scalp and your hair by increasing your moisture levels. I have two co-workers who wear their hair straightened (even during the summer months) who get regular steam treatments.

I also get a steam treatment prior to getting my hair flat ironed at my hair dresser. She uses a Croc and FHI flatirons.

Steam treatments work.

I deep condition under the dryer once a week, is a steam that much better then do you think?

I know you didn't ask me but I did a steam treatment before my latest roller set. In my case, the steam moisturized and softened my hair but as you can see from my pic, it did NOTHING to control the frizz.

Grease keeps my natural hair from reverting in humidity. My straightened hair last for 4-6 weeks without washing. I'm sure it would last longer if I didn't wash my hair, but the new growth would be very noticeable.

What's a Croc 2? Never heard of it..I know you said its a flat iron but who is it made by? What makes it better than a normal flat iron? Thanks

Watch the video in the link it should tell you more about it. I don't know why it works so good, I really cant figure out any other reason why my hair doesn't usually poof in super humid Louisiana. Besides that it is an amazing iron... it just cost way too much money...

Check out the video.. I got this iron during one of the many sales folica has.. was like $25 off.

If you want to wear your hair straight ninety percent of the time there's really no point to going natural. Stay relaxed.

She did mention she had fine hair so i can see why she wants to go natural. Not everyone who's natural prefers to wear their hair in its natural state:yep:. I know for some women across the board the reasons to stop relaxing were because of the chemical damage and lack of growth some had with relaxers.

Some still prefer the straight look and thus opt to be straight haired naturals.

Silcone products, waxes and grease works for me too.

I also notice as a straight style "ages" the easier it is to keep straight.

My relaxed hair was the same way though.....

This is very true. I didn't know if anyone else had noticed that with their hair. It works for me during the non-humid months but when it's humid my hair can't even make it to the aging part, lol. I do remember getting good results with Sabino Moisture Block though. It worked miracles for some. I tested it one summer and it worked out great. I never really used it again because I don't like to flat iron my hair and the product works best when a flat iron is used.

Her is my review I did a few years ago. I may try it again just to see what results I get.

Yes. Steam treatments add more moisture to your hair. So when you straighten any humidity (shower, 90% weather) will not affect the press. It takes a few treatments to get there, but it does work. And I am talking about your roots not turning into a poof as well.

There is a thread somewhere around here that details at home steam treatments using a hair dryer. It something along the lines of

1. Deep Conditioner
2. Wrap hair with hot towel
3. Put plastic cap over towel (some do hot towel, cap, hot towel, cap)
4. Sit under dry 20 min or more (up to you)
5. Rinse in cool water

If I find the thread I will post it.

It usually takes a few treatments. Like some Heat Train, you also got to Steam Train your hair. Again, my co-workers where their hair straight 90% of the time and we are in the ATL and on public transportation running to and from trains and buses.

Only thing we worry about is when it's about to thunderstorm.

I really would like to go natural and am seriously considering it but I would want to wear my hair straight 90% of the time.

My question is to you naturals who wear your hair straight almost 100% of the time does it poof up and totally revert back when its humid?

If this is the case I may have to texlax/texturise but I would love to be 100% natural instead. I am a 4a/4b with fine hair and have concluded that my hair just cannot cope with relaxers. There is this one section in the back that is sooo fine that it always breaks so even when the rest of my hair is growing nicely I end up having to ALWAYS cut it back to the same length to compensate for the broken hair at the back and its getting depressing now as I am going round in circles. I take very good care of my hair, I wash and deep condition once per week etc etc and its really really getting me down that despite my hard work, I keep ending up with hair that has to keep getting cut back shorter than shoulder length.

To be honest, you should be thinking about your retention problems first. I would rather have thick kinky natural waist length hair then relaxed hair that can not grow past sl hun. Summer time I believe for relaxeds and naturals is "humidity city" . There are anti-humdity spray , heat training, and the BKT;but the brazilian keratin treatment and heat training loosens ur curl pattern somewhat.
I think you consider the steam treatments though:yep: and anti-frizz serums.

Thanks. I used to do them every week. I stopped for a while and I definately noticed a difference in the feel and look of my hair.

Sorry what do you mean by as a straight style ''ages'' ? Do you mean as the week goes on or the more you straighten your hair the longer it lasts?

Thanks

Lol! I think I can handle the thunderstorms:darkcloud: That would be no different to when its about to rain now even as a relaxed head and at least I can duck for cover, I just don't want a nice sunny day to spoil my hair

Yes I agree, my rention problems are very depressing I work very hard on my hair and to be shorter than sl is more than depressing me right now:sad:

Anti humidity spray? hmnn I didn't know they had those I will have to check them out thanks

Oh I have another question - which grease do you use?
Thanks

You should check out Brittanynic16 on YouTube. She keeps her hair straight most of the time and it is always sleek. Btw she is also a member here.

I live in Oklahoma, and its pretty humid here most of the summer. I'm 10 months post relaxer, and the only time I get root reversion is when I blowdryed before flatironing. I guess the blowdryer sucked out too much moisture and left my hair thirsty...so now I steam with a glycerin-free conditioner like Aubrey Organics, then airdry in braids before flatironing with my Sedu and argan oil heat protectant. I may get a little reversion around the edges, but it stays pretty straight. Stay away from glycerin products when straightening!!!!

LOL sorry. I'm not a chronic straightener so when I take the time to straighten it, I know I won't be washing my hair for at least 2 weeks - usually it's as close to 3 as I can get. The longer I wear it straight, the easier it is to keep it from reverting.

It's not often I wear hotcombed/flatironed straight hair during the summer months. I do occasionally blow it dry but more often than not it's in braid or twist outs.

HTH

My hair gets poofy when its extremely humid..But that type of extreme humidty doesnt happen too often. When its moderately humid my hair is fine. Argan Oil/ coconut oil (Vatika Frosting), and Chi silk infusion have been life saver.. Just don't use too much . But to tell u the truth I dont mind my poofy hair as much , I'd take it any day over my relaxed hair.. Once u fully go natural and see what ur hair is capable of u wont be as bothered by poofy hair.. HTH

This used to a be a problem for me-- until I investeed in a 100% ceramic flat iron (not just a coated plate). It really made the difference. Its 115 heat index where i am the past several weeks, and no reversion...

My hair does not do well with humidity . I got my hair straighten for Easter/my birthday and I had to wear my hair up because it went poof.
