I really would like to go natural and am seriously considering it but I would want to wear my hair straight 90% of the time.

My question is to you naturals who wear your hair straight almost 100% of the time does it poof up and totally revert back when its humid?

If this is the case I may have to texlax/texturise but I would love to be 100% natural instead. I am a 4a/4b with fine hair and have concluded that my hair just cannot cope with relaxers. There is this one section in the back that is sooo fine that it always breaks so even when the rest of my hair is growing nicely I end up having to ALWAYS cut it back to the same length to compensate for the broken hair at the back and its getting depressing now as I am going round in circles. I take very good care of my hair, I wash and deep condition once per week etc etc and its really really getting me down that despite my hard work, I keep ending up with hair that has to keep getting cut back shorter than shoulder length.

There is a heat training thread here that addresses this question. I hope you find the answer you seek.

Kidding, have you looked in to moisture blocking serums like Sabino,or frizz ease or products like Aveda anti humectant pomade?

ohh just seen your second post lol! Thought you were serious, I haven't looked into anything as yet as I am transitioning (sort of unless I change my mind) and was just wondering how straight naturals manage..

My daughters and I are all natural. I wear my hair curly (mainly due to my workout regimen) but I just did the Brazilian Keratin Treatment in their hair. This is my 1st time but it is supposed to reduce frizz significantly so perhaps this is an option for you.

There are several threads here on this.

Good Luck!!

There are plenty of naturals who wear their hair straight the majority of the time. Of course, it's easier to do during the cooler seasons. I have a friend who wears her natural WL hair straight most of the time. During the extreme summer months (i.e. july, august) she will wear some braidouts or just keep her straightened hair in a bun.

in my experience, its not easy especially on humid days. when i do wear my hair straight i do not wear it loose (high pony) and use a pressing oil. Without it my hair will get puffy. Although on those really humid/misty days nothing can prevent the poof.the humidity also cuts the life of my press.

i still don't have my straightening method perfect just yet and i've had experiences where i flat iron half of my hair and by the time i start with the second half, i'm already seeing parts of it sloooowly morph back into a fro

that said, there are people that wear their natural hair straight 99% of the time without any problems so it's probably more of a technique thing more than anything else

good luck!

Straight & Natural + humidity = :nono2:

I'm a year and three months into my transition - and my hair is reactive to humidity. I get frizz, particularly down the length of my hair to the tip and my roots sometime (sometimes) survive the humidity, and when it doesn't my roots get really puffy. When its to the point of no return, a nice ponytail does the trick.

Transitioning to natural is the best choice for me, so I embrace the summer months and adjust accordingly. I wear a baseball cap sometimes to ward off the frizz, especially if I just got my hair straightened, or I will just wet it and sweep it up into a nice ponytail.

I live in humidity and straighten my hair % 80 of the time. My hair hardly ever poofs when I flat iron. It will poof if I only blow dry. Croc 2 (my flat iron) claims it fights against humidity, that I don't know for sure. When it does revert I just do a braid out.

I think if you do consider going natural and you don't figure out how to tame humidity most of time in the summer.. that you may find that you are satisfied wearing naturals styles and/or wearing semi straighten hair.

^^^I was just going to say, when my stylist irons my hair, it doesn't revert with humidity. She also uses a Croc iron. I actually just got my hair done today and I live in MD, where it's been especially humid. I was planning on taking pictures tonight anyway so I will come back and post here so you can see how sleek it is. It looks like my hair in my siggie (but the color has faded and it's slightly longer now).

I live in south FL. I can't wear my hair bone straight in the summer. Yesterday I wore it blown out and flat ironed and it was very bushy after just a few moments in the heat. I say if you want your hair straight most of the time you should relax or heat train.

If you want to wear your hair straight ninety percent of the time there's really no point to going natural. Stay relaxed.

Completely understand. This is the only reason why I am not natural right now. I live in a warm climate and the moisture in the air is a big challenge. I prefer my hair curly 90% of the time but for the rare times I do want my hair straight, it will not stay if it is natural. Texlaxing provides the versatility.

I wouldn't even attempt to keep straight hair in the humidity. I have fine hair too and it sucks up any and every kind of moisture that's in the air. I can't even wear a braid or twist out w/o it going poofy so I don't even try. Even when I had a full blown relaxer I couldn't wear my hair straight in the summer.

Please look into steam treatments. It helps condition your scalp and your hair by increasing your moisture levels. I have two co-workers who wear their hair straightened (even during the summer months) who get regular steam treatments.

I also get a steam treatment prior to getting my hair flat ironed at my hair dresser. She uses a Croc and FHI flatirons.

Steam treatments work.

I don't press or flat iron in the summer. Right now I have it in a bun. I've been doing various heat free styles like braid outs and twist outs. It's impossible for me to keep a nice straight style in this 90 something degree weather.

Aye yo HairQueen, this right here...

I notice that when I was relaxed many years ago my hair would respond very badly to humidity & do the usual "poof". The ends especially would get bushy. However, since going natural & wearing my hair in a straightened stated 90%+ of the time for all of 2010 this doesn't happen. My hairline is the only place that gets any reversion. I really, really, really attest this difference to adding moisture & sealing the hair shaft (thus sealing in moisture). Deep conditions, steam treatment & a slick dubie have delivered me from the "poof".

I'm transitioning and I got my hair professionally straightened today. Then I taught 2 fitness classes....um yeah, my bone straight hair didn't last very long. The ends and edges are still very straight but the entire middle of my hair is SUPER puffy and if I part it all I see are little spiral curls LOL....oh well, I'm actually thinking of going back to either relaxing or texlaxing soon because of this humidity. I like to wear my hair straight so there's really no point for me to not relax.

Last summer I flat ironed my hair with chi products and it turned to afro pretty quickly due to humidity. I flat ironed this time with a heavy grease that contains no mineral oil and although my hair isn't bone straight so far it hasn't shrunken into a fro. I used Ultra Sheen creme satin-press and sleep in a snug fitting satin cap. It's probably too heavy for most but I don't mind since it makes my press last longer than usual for me.

When you say you did a Brazilian Keratin Treatment in their hair do you mean you personally did it or they got it done at the salon? I don't know much about these but I thought they could only be done at a salon?

What's a Croc 2? Never heard of it..I know you said its a flat iron but who is it made by? What makes it better than a normal flat iron? Thanks
