@NikkiQ
Since you are cowashing so often I'm guessing you are moisturizing on wet hair, right? What moisturizer are you using? I don't think I see it on your list? Is water based?

On both wet and dry. The only thing I have right now is CFCG and BRX Braid Spray. I never know what to buy :-(

I am mostly 4a w/4b mixed in. Noticed 3c right at my nape.
Regimen: Wash, henna, oil rinse & DC bi-weekly. Either flat iron or tnc. Introducing every other day cowashing on the 2nd week. Moisturize and seal nightly with avg/water and wheat germ or hemp oil. Occ oil scalp w/castor oil or evco
Issues: Maintaining moisture at roots and ends
Products that work: Avg/rosewater, castor oil, evco, evoo, wheat germ oil, hemp seed oil, YTCu, Aussie 3min, Aussie Moist, AOHSR, AOWC, Jilbere shower comb.
Products that don't work: Denman D3-lots of split ends
Questions: How are folks keeping moisture in their hair for a tnc?
Struggles: Keeping roots moisturized
Needs: Moisture. Low to no heat.
Testing: Trying out SM Curl & Style Milk for tnc. Hawaiian Silky 14n1 at roots

Do those have a lot of protein in them? I use a braid spray but I alternate with a moisturizing spray that does not contain any protein. My moisturizing reggie includes on wet hair: leave in spray, creamy moisturizer then sealing with an oil or serum. Later when my hair has completely dried I use a heavier cream or shea butter or pomade on my hair. How often are you dcing?

These are the ingredients in the braid spray that I primarily use:

Deionized Water , Glycerin , Propylene Glycol , PPG-12-PEG-50 Lanolin , Dicetyldimonium Chloride , Polyquaternium 32 , Paraffinum Liquidum , Tea Tree Leaf Oil - Melaleuca Alternifolia , Polysorbate 80 , Oat Kernel Extract - Avena Sativa , Allantoin , Silk Amino Acids , Sheep Sorrell , Yarrow , Slippery Elm Bark , Sage , Henna , Comfrey , Burdock Root , Goldenseal , Cherry Bark , Ginseng , Black Walnut , Chamomile , Alfalfa , Hyssop , Wheat Germ , Methyl & Propyl Paraben , Fragrance.

I'm a very bad LHCFer. I don't know what ingredients are protein and which aren't :nono:. I do know that most of the leave ins that I've used or are currently using have a light protein in them. That may be the problem, but I use them sparingly. I DC once a week for at least an hour.

NikkiQ, silk amino acids (SAA) is a derivative of non-animal protein. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. I'm dippin', but what is the name of the spray?

Hey dip all you want! I'm learning something new here

The spray is African Royal BRX Braid and Extension Spray. I've always liked it b/c it was so light and my hair was super soft, but after a while my hair just didn't stay moisturized.

Thanks, allmundjoi. You anwered for me.

SAA is the only protein that I saw but honestly I only know the obvious ones. The first ingredient is water which is good. I think the spray is not enough and you need to follow up with a creamy moisturizer and do you seal? I know getting the moisture just right will assist with curl definition too.

I change it up between amla and Hot Six oils for sealing, but I'm not on my sealing game like I should be :spank: I know! I used the cantu shea butter leave in this morning as a moisturizer.

NikkiQ, how do you like that cantu? Do you stay moisturized throughout the day?

I really like it. I was using it as a moisturizer before and stopped. Why? I have no idea. Maybe b/c I'm stupid or had a major brain fart.

Do you use it on wet or dry hair? How do you use it? Im thinking about getting some this week.

I bc'd for the second time on April 24th. This time around my hair is very different than I remember it being. I'm still kinda trying to figure it out but I'll answer the questions anyway.

I'm mostly 4a with a 3c crown. My hair is fine low density and porous.

Regimen: I still wash once a wk like I've been doing since my haircare journey began. Either than that I leave it alone.

*Overnight DC before wash day with Myhoneychild Olive you dc.
*Shampoo with Chagrin Valley Ayurvedic herb shampoo bar or conditioning shampoo bar.
*Dc with Myhoneychild Honey Hair mask for at least 1 hr.
*apply Giovanni Direct Leave In to wet but not dripping wet hair
* seal with avocado butter

Issues: The only real issue I've had so far is dryness but its getting much better.

Products that work
: Chagrin Valley Shampoo bars:love:, Myhoneychild's honey hair mask and olive you dc, Giovanni Direct Leave in.

products that don't
: Commercial shampoos; My relaxed/transitioning hair didn't really care what kind of shampoo I used but my natural hair is much drier than my relaxed hair was. I find commercial shampoos strip my hair too much.
This is not really a product but combing dry hair without conditioner in it is a big no no. Its pretty much pointless to even try because my hair will just curl right back up on itself after I finish combing.

struggles:
My biggest struggle was dryness. When I first bc'd my hair was super dry. It seemed to get worse as time went on. Fortunately I read a thread about Chagrin valley shampoo bars in the vendor forum and decided to try it out. The first wash I noticed a big difference. My hair actually felt like hair again. Its been a month now and I'm loving my progress with this dryness issue. Even though it feels and looks great I think it can be even softer. So last week I decided to add a mid wk overnight dc with giovanni smooth as silk. I didnt shampoo it out I just rinsed it out with water. My hair felt like heaven. I may add this as a step to my reggie but I'm not sure yet.

needs: MOISTURE!!!The more moisture my hair has the better it behaves and the more it curls.

Ok so these pics are from different days but I did the same thing to my hair in all of them. Freshly washed dc applied leave in sealed with avocado butter and let air dry. When my hair was like 50% dry I shake, shake, shake to give it volume and help it lay better.

As someone else said saa is a protein and I think its a pretty strong one (my hair hates it). Also IIRC Wheat Germ is a ceramide which helps your hair retain protein and henna acts as a protein. This braid spray may be to much to use on your hair daily.

sweet jesus! you have some juicy curls... and yes I would say a ton of 3c all up & thru

goes back to read reggie

Op I think I'm a 4a. I wear my hair shrunk to avoid breakage and I don't manipulate it too much. If I cowash everyday I don't detangle each day so after the first day I don't detangle from then on after washes.

tHENATuRALhAiRpRoJEcT Yep...This is my second time being natural. The first time I lightly texlaxed after maybe a yr of being natural. Then I did a corrective to try and go completely straight. I have pics in my fotki of my lightly texlaxed hair and my hair after the "corrective" relaxer.

When I saw your pics in the 4a thread I thought our hair looked very similar.

Are you my hair twin??? LOL. I also don't detangle after every cowash! I'm afraid of over manipulation.

It's possible lol. I'm not good at hair typing. Do you think our hair similar? I cowash everyday or every 2 days

Yeah if my hair wasn't so thin but your curls (3rd pic down in your post) looks like mine when wet and product free. What I would do to have thicker hair...:lick:

Okay fellow 4A-ers...who has successfully (or unsuccessfully) tried "plopping"? TIA

If this is using a t-shirt to dry your hair then I have. I  it. I use the t-shirt for 5-10 minutes max.I do apply all of my products prior but I still follow up again with a spray leave in. It helps decrease my drying time and I get the best definition for my wash & go's with this method.
