Mineral Oil: Costs less to package it for sale than to throw it away

Once SLS damages your hair and strips away all naturally occuring protective oils from the hair and scalp, how about applying some industrial waste to add "manageability" and shine? It's actually cheaper for companies to package up mineral oil for sale than it is to dispose of it, which is why it's the additive of choice to cover up the damage traditional shampoos cause. Mineral oil adds temporary shine and weighs down damaged hair, making it less apparent that it's been stripped. Nice, right?

So thats why the ue it in afro products!! :nono:

It is also odorles sand colorless and a great emuslifier. It does a great job of locking in moisture - in fact it does such a great job that it locks moisture OUT as well, which ends up being the problem.

and the stuff about SLS is half truths.

i hope i don't sound snarky or mean, but i hate articles that make it sound as if manufacturers are out to get you or pass off their junk on you so they put mineral oil in products. in fact it is usually "natural extracts" and alla that which is more often junk put in products to justify higher prices.

I still really like Avanti Silicone Mix w/ mineral being right up there in the ingredient list:grin:

........sigh.........and for years and years and years women were using mineral oil with no problems. In fact, many still uses products with mineral oil with no problems. And it's not just African-American women.

I think our hair was/is damaged due to excessive heat usage and relaxers. (Edit: too tight braids, not taking care of our own hair under weaves, ignoring scalp problems like dandruff, and the list goes on....) I think it's easier to blame ingredients. I'm speaking for my own hair, at least.

As far as SLS, I actually find some no-poos to be drying and irritating. The essential oils in WEN did a number on my scalp.

It's true that plenty of people used it for ages with no problems.

Its also true that I have to avoid it like the plague in all products because it causes massive irritation. No bandwagoning here-- I just dont like having scabby bumps on my scalp.

To each his own.

..

I use mineral oil on my hair since I use Silicon Mix and I use grease on my ends.. No problems for my hair

I don't know why people think mineral oil is only in black hair care products...I see it in just about every cosmetic line.

Why do we think the "man" would waste time trying to mess up our hair, when they already think our hair is messed up by nature?

The same happens for me. The only oil I can use directly on my scalp is olive oil... but that's because I have various sensitivities.

I agree with the bolded :yep: I still use some products with mineral oil in it and my hair seems to be doing ok.

Gotta agree with you OP. I used to be one of the ladies who saw no problem with my cones and mineral oil products. And it took almost a whole year to figure out that these were the cause of my lifeless, dull hair with buildup, stiffness and inability to stay moisturized. Since I've cleared these items out of my reggie, my hair has been absolutely thriving. So to each his own.

kinda OT, but i just realized that iNEVER had single strand knots when i used products WITH mineral oil....NEVER....hmmm coincidence???? idk...lol...may have to experiment lol

Mineral oil... ahhhh... I'd have to say different strokes for different folks. Some people's hair thrives on it, some people's hair can't STAND coconut oil and other natural stuff. America is a capitalistic society. So I don't blame companies for using the last drop of the cheap stuff to make a buck and a profit. They have stock holders to make rich, as well as themselves.

Finally!! I'm sick of people making it seem like Mineral Oil is the creation of the devil. Most of my deep conditioners have mineral oil in them and they are wonderful products. TBH, I feel like the people who say that mineral oil is ineffective on their hair are either 1) not using it correctly 2) using products that just SUCK (and that can be from other things than mineral oil) or 3) it's all in their head.

Mineral oil is definitely the debil on my hair...but only when it's left in. However, there are plenty of other natural oils that are terrible left on my wet hair as well (castor, coconut, etc). At the end of the day, it's still an oil. I wish my hair liked it, because my wallet would love that. But alas, we can never be...

I think most problems from mineral oil stem from incorrect use. Most women don't know how to use it the right way and would frankly be better off on a no MO reggie in my opinion

I'm still learning the pro and cons of mineral oil. Some con sites scare me (i.e. mineral oil = might as well put 10W-30 in your hair, etc.). But most of the women in my family use products that list mineral oil in the first 5 ingredients. My grandma had gorgeous hair and all I remember is Blue Magic in her lap when she would do her own and our hair. So i'm still educating myself on this issue. It's not really a big issue with me, but I still want to be knowledgeable about it.

I loves me some Aphogee 2 minute has it in mineral oil and all. :)
I don't make a habit of getting products with Mineral Oil it in there.
I learned early in age Grease and my hair was a negative. Used Jojoba oil on my scalp as a teen. Now I don't use anything on my scalp.

I think if your hair is MO sensitive avoid it. If not indulge and enjoy.

I only avoid moisturizers with mineral oil in it because my hair feels like crap when MO is left in. Maybe its because I don't know how to use it correctly and like LadyPaniolo said, I'm better off avoiding it completely.

fiyahwerks A friend of mine told me his aunt put motor oil in her hair religiously. Shes an older woman who believes it makes her hair grow. I asked him if she knew it was synthetic oils now a days, he said she knew. He quoted her sayin "Tell ya uncle to leave me some oil when he get done changing it" I asked him if she had long hair, he says she almost bald!!:lachen::lachen:

What is this "right way" everyone is speaking of? :perplexed If a conditioner has mineral oil the "right way" to use it would be to follow the directions. The directions would then advise something simplistic as putting the conditioner on the hair, concentrating on the ends and leaving it in for 5+ minutes. If it's used to seal moisture, then the moisturizer of choice is applied and the mineral oil sealing product is applied on top to coat the hair while locking in moisture. I don't get the added complexity people are trying to imply; if mineral oil just doesn't work for someone's hair, it just doesn't, to each their own. :look:

I assumed they were perhaps talking about leaving it in vs. rinsing out?

Maybe, but I'm one of those people that if it doesn't work rinsing it out I am NOT leaving it in and vice versa. Why risk trying all the methods at once if the result can be devastating?

With that said, my hair doesn't mind mineral oil. :drunk:

I know alot of people don't like mineral oil because of the bad reputation and it's uses in industrial manufacturing, but now that I'm natural, I use it to "seal" in my two-strand twist (it's in MJ's products) and haven't had any adverse effects. So what's good for one person, maybe not be good for another.

That's true...I mean I'm curious george with a lot of my products though...like Tresemme Naturals is my fave cheap conditioner, but I don't like leaving it in.

Wow, I never heard of that. Ugh@the thought of even touching used motor oil, let alone putting it on my body. Strong woman if you ask me.

Aireen ithink MO/MO based products are ONLY really supposed to be used on the length of ur hair and/or ur ends--not ur scalp...some ppl 'incorrectly' using MO may be putting products with mineral oil on their scalp--thus clogging their pores...at least that's my interpretation of using MO the wrong way....idk tho...
