I have BSB length hair and my bun in my opinion is small. I wouldn't classify my hair as thin nor thick, I guess medium? So I'd like to know, when am I going to get a big full bun?! :perplexed Do I need thick hair or does the size increase when it grows out? I know stupid question; it seems obvious that the size would increase as the hair grows or thick hair would produce a bigger bun but I'm feeling all sorts of emotions right now and I need some encouragement in this area. Am I ever going to have a doughnut bun?

You have pretty hair and lovely length. I think if you airdry it can plump your bun up. When I relaxed bone straight, I never could get my bun to look full like I wanted, but once I started texlaxing and airdrying, my bun got bigger.

I like to measure my progress by the number of turns I have to make if I'm doing a twist bun, because I've been discouraged too.

Your hair looks very healthy, so hang in there, you WILL have the bun of your dreams.

Thank you!

Thank you for the compliment! My hair air-dries straight so that's out of the question for me. I remember before that technique would've worked though. Yes, I see a lot of texlaxed ladies with full buns and I just admire... :lick: I'll try that to count my turns too, thank you! Thanks for the additional compliment, I've been feeling indecisive and discouraged lately.

Hey Aireen -

The information on how I bun is located in my blog entry (see my siggy for link). I think air drying, rollersetting and/or bunning on a braidout plumps it up nicely.

Here's a thread I made about my bun - http://www.longhaircareforum.com/hair-care-tips-product-review-discussion/520537-divachyks-bun.html.

ETA: Apparently my siggy is not working, here is the blog link: Long Hair Care Forum - divachyk

Hope that helps!

As you already know, I love your bun! :lovedrool: I've never done a braidout, I'll try that as well! Thanks for the blog, I'll check it out right now! :D

:grin::grin::grin: thank you soooo very much :grin::grin::grin:

My braidouts are not perfect but I don't desire them to be. :drunk: I only braidout for a plumper bun or just for fun. I have yet to wear an actual braidout with my hair handing down. To do my braidout, I simply finger part hair down the center and braid my left side and then my right side and secure with a satin roller on each side.

To braid: I gather the left side hair as if I'm gonna do a pony, but braid the hair instead. This way, the top/crown area of my hair remains nice and smooth and the braided hair gets wavy (hope I didn't confuse you). I do this for both sides and secure with the satin roller as mentioned above.

My buns are still plump even without doing a braidout. The key, the catch, the trick is to not wrap the hair too tight when making the bun. The looser your wrap the bun, the plumper it will be. The tighter you wrap the bun, the smaller it will be. :yep:

Get at me if you have questions.

Ah you're right, after reading your blog I realized where I messed up. My buns are too tight and I wasn't using the same method. I'm so glad I got all this wonderful advice from you and the other users. I'll try everything and see how it goes from there, practice makes perfect! Thank you! Yes, I will get back to you with any questions I have. :yep:

Wahh! Red hair! Really pretty! I realized I was kind of doing my bun "wrong" but I like your technique and I subscribed! :D

Aw thank you! I saw earlier...yea, don't make your bun too tight. I can't wait until I can make a real bun, lol!

You can also do my ballerina tuck bun...I did it on SL hair and it gives the illusion of a nice full bun, and it's not very tight so it doesn't pull on your hair.

YouTube - Tutorial: Ballerina Tuck Bun

It's a lovely bun, but you've got to be very careful about the pressure that you're putting on your ends. I suppose it's okay if you're not doing it regularly but over time you may weaken your ends. I do a similar bun, but instead of tucking the hair in the the hair band, I just pull it right through and pin the hair down using bobby pins.

I put my hair in a ponytail, then I roll my hair down like a pincurl and bobby pin it. It makes my bun look bigger because there's space in the middle of the curls if that make sense lol.
Here's a pic (it's kind of a messy one):

I think I'll be using pins too. :yep:

Yep it makes sense! Thanks for the visual, your bun looks lovely.

This is soooo pretty!
I'm kinda slow so I don't know how you got it but I love it! :yep:

Thanks! The hair is very loose in the hair band, it's only in there enough so it doesn't fall out. It's not pulling on my ends at all (I don't really like "tight" styles). I would imagine I'd need to be more careful when my hair is longer because there'd be more hair tucked in there.

Thank You. I wish I could explain it better hahaha. Only thing I could add is when you make a pin curl you use your fingers and you use your fingers to make the curl bigger. The space where your finger is is the air I was talking about lol, I don't think that helps.

Ooooh! I love buns! This is the pic from my avatar:

It's my version of divachyk's bun. I'm still trying to get the swirl....

I always do a messy bun like the girl in this video:

ETA: My hair is APL, so I know you should be able do a nice juicy bun!

I don't tuck my hair in for this reason. I use cut up stockings to pony with and I slather them in condish to provide protection to my hair.

I LOVE THAT BUN, GIRYAL.....:grin::grin::grin::grin::grin:

Love your tut! Cute bun. I read somewhere that your ends can be impacted no matter the length of your hair so yes, be very careful. I always apply a little extra love (moisture/oil) to my ends before bunning. As I mentioned in a previous post, I pony with a cut up stocking that's slathered in condish.

Love your buns. Thanks OP for posting. I am APL and I don't do buns as above because it doesn't look good - not full. Thanks ladies for your tips and links. I am going to try some and see. OH subscribing as well to this thread.

Picture in my avator I wouldn't wear it like that outside
1) It is a high twist and my nape I don't like
2) Doesn't really conceal my ends.

I do a tuck in ponytail for PS, with my hair tuck in a scrungy. Do you think that will damage the edges somewhat (like thin ends cause it is being flatten)? I don't pin it in. The scrungy is satin.

Love this bun! :yep:My hair is SL and I have been looking for buns I could do that did not use that donut filler thingy. This has been the quickest and easiest so far. Less than 30 sec and I had a bun. I will watch out for my ends but when i need a quick bun, this is it. :yay:

Thanks for the visuals! I love your bun and the bun of the lady featured in the YouTube video. I wonder how these type of buns work for people with extra long hair though?

Yeah, those buns were easier when I was SL. As my hair gets longer, I just twirl it around my finger before pinning. It makes the bun bigger, which is the look I'm going for. :yep:

Ah okay, makes sense! Thanks!

The key is to not pull the hair tightly. For the bun in my avatar, I put the hair in a ponytail then loosely gather up the hair and start a sort of roll-tuck like I'm doing a very very loose bantu knot and I secure the end of the knot with a hair pin or if I'm feeling adventurous with a hair stick. I'm still learning how to use those.

For more volume you could braid up your hair the night before (2 or 3 single braids) then comb it out with a wide tooth comb in the morning.

what about buns for natural hair?i wish mine looked fuller. when straight its fine because i can fluff it out but when nappy its shrinks and kills all of the faux volume!

(not the sig bun, that was almost a year ago.)
