Getting weave checked?

I was thinking about this after looking at another "weave check" thread and wanted to get some opinions!

I was considering it because, it is very probable that my hair will, to some, appear suspect...

Here's why!

1. When I wear puffs, or smooth my edges down in any way, they behave in a way that is not usually associated with natural afro textured hair. They appear very smooth and not frizzy at all, so when my puff gets really huge, it might appear to some that there is a dramatic difference in my textures! The ends can get really frizzy!

2. My hair likes to bleach slightly in the summer, mainly the ends and so again, it might appear that I am wearing a dark brown puff while my natural hair color is black!

To answer my own question though, I'd say I look forward to having enough hair to be suspected as being a weave, but I don't look forward to having all my hard work and dedication to my hair discredited as such.

So for me, the answer is NO!

Well, I can't wait to get weave checked! Even when my hair was relaxed, I wasn't getting weave checked cause it was always SL or shorter. I had just got my hair to APL when I decided to transition, but in the few months I was APL, family members saw my pics online and thought it was a weave. I was proud to say it was all mine!

I got and continue to get weave and wig checked with short hair. My hair is big and poofy, just like I like it. Its like Tina Turner.

I don't think I really got to know my hair until it got to wear it is now. I thought when it was shorter that I was 3a. Now that it has grow out I see it is really 3b and 4a. I am about SL.

I just got weave checked not to long ago by the church mother she walked around me in a circle while saying "your hair looks nice" an by the second round she said "hmph and its all your too" I just started cause thats my girl shes hilarious.

I cant wait till my hair gets apl tho

I can't wait to get weave checked! I like getting compliments and I feel like getting weave checked and my hair not being a weave is like....wow your hair is so nice I thought that it couldn't possible be yours. Plus ever since I cut my hair I don't get compliments on my hair anymore.

As for friends and people I see regularly both "Black" and "White", they've seen my progress so they know better. If and when I press it out it will probably confuse the white ones though, and I can see them wondering and perhaps asking in that case.

Anyway, I say no, because I'd like for it to be the norm for Black women to have a lot of big or long hair, that's all their own. I don't want to be weave checked because I want to be one of many with a "lotta locs"

I actually have gotten weave/wig checked...and when it happens, unless it's someone I know (and I know they mean it as a compliment), I definitely roll my eyes. People who think black women need to have wigs, weaves, or get their hair done every week at the salon to have nice hair get on my nerves.

I'm patiently awaiting the day that long, healthy hair is considered our norm.
In the meantime, I'll take it as a compliment.

me too!! my edges/front effortlessly lay down with virtually no frizz, even if i dont want it too...when i tie up my hair at night when i wake up the front is always straight so i just push it back with a headband...but when i blew my hair out and put it in a puff everyone thought it was a phony pony because it was so big and they were used to my shrunken hair, and there was a difference in textures, especially when my hair in the front started reverting into waves but the back kept a strong fro.

i put it depends...because im conflicted...yeah i want hair thats long and lush enough that people think it could be a weave, but then again i dont want ppl thinking its a weave because most ppl arent gonna ask me, and will just assume it is...furthermore i know alot of ppl will be tryna dip their nasty lil hands all up in my hair without asking (it happens now!) searching for tracks (or maybe just in awe lol) and that would be so annoying...but i already know once my hair gets to apl its gonna be in a permanent bun (except for the ocassional weekend) so i probably wont have that many weave checking opportunities anyways lol

I like this comment! I think it's really unfortunate that so many black women refuse to believe that they too can have long, or at least longer hair that is all theirs! That so many of our sisters wear weave as if it is the only acceptable way to go out in public!

Disclaimer: I am not saying anything bad about weaves or wigs in general! I think they're fine if you are wearing them as a means of switching up your style or protecting your hair. What I dislike, is to see women who wear really, really bad weaves/wigs, and those who do glue-ins, sew-ins, lace fronts, ect, to the detriment of their own hair.

ahhh, I can't wait until someone thinks my hair is a weave. I'd be flattered ! Some girl in my HS did once though, she laughed at me the whole day then when I confronted her about why she was laughing she said she was laughing at my weave. I gave her this look like "ARE YOU DUMB?" and told her it was my hair, she stopped laughing and told me she thought it was a weave. I said that this would be the baddest weave I'd ever seen on someone. again i had BSL hair, but i wasn't all that.

at first i was pissed the fck off that she was laughing at my hair then i got bigheaded cause she thought it was a weave, I swung it extra hard when she was around.

I used to always get checked for weave, even dh well we weren't dating at the time but he thought it was weave.. He asked someone if that was my real hair, she said yeah dummy..lol... My hair was thick, nearly bsl, jet black and just looking good....

Wow!! I must admit that I'm a little surprised at the results of this poll! While I imagined that some would feel flattered at getting weave checked, I thought more would dislike it.

IDK, I just hate the idea of people assuming that my hair is "too nice, too long, too pretty" to be my own. I think for every one person who is bold enough to actually try to weave-check you, at least a dozen others probably would just assume your hair is fake. I want people to KNOW that my hair is all mine! All while drooling over how long, thick and pretty it is! ...Whenever it gets there!

I got WC as a sl/apl relaxed chick....My Mom would tease me how my hair looked wiggish after a relaxer..no the pretty hair is MINE! (even with a Hallie Berry I got WC'ed!)... ITA with the skewed notion that a black girl cant have long or pretty hair..it irks me...

I have naturally bulky hair, so it always looks like a weave or a wig unless it's very short. It's not very long now but it looks like a wig and maybe could stand a trim with some thinning shears but I won't let anyone do that unless they're very experienced and do good work. I don't know why people get upset about this. If you have anything that looks so good it might be a fake well then that's a plus.

I agree with the ladies that say it depends. If someone was complimentary about it that's fine. However, if they were trying to be rude or funny of course that wouldn't be nice. I think even when my hair grows to apl or longer that i will not be weave checked because I have very fine hair and most weaves I see are full and thick (nice ones at least).

No, I don't want to have to deal with any "haters" weave checking me. It does nothing for my self-esteem or confidence. I just want people to look at my hair and say she has some long hair. Around some folk saying a person has nice hair only leads to the inevitable weave check but I wish it wasn't like that. Maybe it's because I'm not impressed by length because I grew up around long haired women...IDK. But I want nice hair without the weave check.

Yep, I'll admit it, I can't wait for someone to ask if its all my hair! lol. And I know people are going to ask bc most people have only ever seen me with neck length hair.

Actually, I've gotten asked if my hair was real several times, even though I've never had long hair. Especially when i was in high school, I had a SL bob that was thick/healthy and bouncy and all one length. People always used to weave check me. I think when ur hair is thick/shiny and has that perfect "done" look to it, some people will think its weave even when its short.

Nope, don't need the extra unwanted attention. Its hair, if they wanna look, fine. If they don't, fine. Either way, I am not growing it out for anyone else or to gain any type of reaction.

I don't blame people for weave checking, for every one natural long hair they are like 20 weaved heads. I don't blame people for checking.

I recently got asked this by a doctor I've known for years. Was surprised because it was like 'Where was she all this time that she is just now noticing?' but I said 'Yes it's mine wanna see it? I started to take off the scrunchies, was wondering if I should take it all down, but decided not to, but left thinking, since I didnt she probably still thinks it's fake. I've weaved checked myself in a video , At the time a certain someone was being asked to do a weave check herself on youtube So I did a REAL one....lol...I just don't want someone to come up and yank on my ponytail , that did happen many years ago and at the time it was fake, but I had it so secured that it yanked my whole head back *whiplash* . so as long as they don't pull it they can say and think what they want. I know it can always be proven if I were to choose.

I don't think the mentality about us having long hair=wearing weaves is going anywhere anytime soon tho

I voted it depends. People calling my hair a weave wouldn't irk me. I'd be bothered by potentially grubby, dirty, crusty fingers raking through my hair and across my scalp though. Asking and then giving a good touch is ok.... a bad touch where people have malicious intent (aka raking hard, pulling, scratching, etc) is not welcomed at all.

OP I feel you wholeheartedly on the textures and summer color. When I wet my hair and gel it down, it waves up with little to no frizz. I can tie the perimeter down with water and a little CO and it'll lay there for a hot minute.... but everything else will frizz up and keep getting bigger

I luvs muh grass. (read: I love my hair) It's pretty cool.
