For naturals: Oil to hair after straightening causes reversion

So, I've learned a big lesson this week: Adding oil to your hair after you straighten will make it revert when it comes in contact with humidity!!!

I did a protein treatment, then followed up with an all-day deep condition with EVOO added to the DC. I then rinsed the DC out to make sure there was no residue left. I used a micro fiber towel to blot out water from my hair until it was damp.

I took very little sections and applied teeny weeny bits of Biosilk Silk Therapy (which I found for £5.99 at TK Maxx - for my Brit ladies) to each section). I layered this with Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum and then blow dried. OMG...this is the first time I got very smooth, non-dry feeling blow-out!. However, I think this has to do with the smaller sections and blow drying from the ends first before making my way up to the roots.

After this, I used my GHD and straightened using the comb chase method. I got a silky smooth press and my hair was SOFT and felt moisturised (thanks to the intensive DC I did). I've been wearing this all week and for my London girls, you know it's rained at least twice, we've woken up to a very foggy and misty mornings. My hair was still holding up and looking silky smooth with bounce and all. Then yesterday, I'm not sure what I was thinking (maybe I was thinking of all the LHCF 'rules'. I took a dime size of olive oil, rubbed it in my palms and applied it to my hair. Well, this morning, I work up and their was the same fog/mist. I stepped out for literally 2 mins and my hair is starting to revert! I'm kicking myself for trying to follow 'rules' which my hair clearly doesn't subscribe too :whip:. I know it's different for everyone but I just thought I'd share my own experience.

R u sure the reversion is due to the ouil? When my hair starts to revert I actually aid oil and wrap and the hair straightens..Maybe the fog was extra dense. I dunno

I am about 99.9999% that it is the oil. The fog/mist was less dense than earlier in the week and my hair was perfectly fine. I have treated it the same every night....alternating betweeen a flexirods or cross-wrapping depending on what I was trying to acheive and it still held up until I introduced the oil into the mix. Another reason why I am convinced it is the oil is because I mainly concentrated on my ends and the ends is where the reversion is occuring. I know it seems a bit mad and against conventional wisdom (hence why I am shocked too). However, this was how I experienced it.

I am going to have to agree with keelioness. I dont think it was the oil that made your hair revert.

If you are natural, unless you use a serum everyday to every other day then your hair will start reverting. Serums (which are -cone laden) are only good for a day or two after application, then they need to be reapplied.

I realized this the hard way. MY hair is not relaxed bone straight and I thought I could get away with using -cones only on the day I rollerset. Welllll, I exercised and my hair reverted, lesson learned. Now I apply a serum on the night before exercising and I am all good.

I prefer my Fantaisia IC serum, which I have to use lightly or else I will be a greasy mess.

I will test out your theory about reapplying the serum mid week rather than oil to see what happens. :yep: I will have to wait until a few more months because I have no intention of straigthening soon. Takes up my precious time. :nono:

However, I'm still having doubts because I recall getting caught up in a bit of drizzle mid-week and my hair did not revert. I too have the IC Fantasia serum and to be honest, I hate it. I found it too heavy and it left a lot of residue in my hair afterwards. The Biosilk is a happy medium between a leave-in and a serum.

^^^ Thanks Sunrise. I thought GHD was a hair product or something.

@ labellenoire, I see why your hair reverted... you didn't put a product in your hair that would keep it from reverting before your flat ironed. If your hair is very resistant, serum may not work for keeping your hair straight.

For my natural hair, the only thing that keeps my hair from reverting is grease. The times when I didn't use grease, my hair would revert very soon as well, even after I applied oil. If I just blowdry then flat iron, it'll be so nice and soft, but the straight look will only last a few hours before it puffs up and shrinks.

I know a lot of ladies are opposed to grease, but I'm sure there are other products that some members have mentioned that keep their hair from reverting. Sabino Moisture Block comes to mind.

HTH!

Maybe the EVOO stripped off some of the serum and that caused the reversion.

Dunno. It seems like the serums are what have been holding your press.

When I was natural the only way to avoid reversion was to use my wet to dry iron which is not LHCF approved but it gave me swag....All the oils and grease might keep it straight but even the tiniest amount would weigh my hair down something awful.

For me, the dense fog would have done me in. Any type of humidity, moisture in the air or temperature over 70 will make my hair revert and POOF.

Sorry for bumping such an old thread.

I don't plan on straightening until probably November, but I wondering what you naturals use before and after straightening to keep it from reverting?
