Girls, not trying to be bootleg or ghetto but funds just not right for a steamer right now. Is there an alternative that I can use in the interim to get steamer like effects without buying the steamer. I'm sure I'll forfeit some of the steamer benefits by doing an alternative method but I'm only looking for a short-term fix until I buy a steamer. TIA!

I've read of a lot of ladies using a hot, wet towel wrapped around their head and sitting under a regular hooded dryer. The water from the towel supposedly makes steam. I've never tried it though.

But I was going to try holding my head over a pot of water but decided it may not be safe. :nono: Especially since I'm accident prone.

I think I might be doing something wrong as I am only getting about the same results as a heatcap, thus far. I have only used mine twice, though, for 30 minutes a pop, and the first time I did not realize until later that I added WR tropical coconut shampoo instead of conditioner to my conditioning cocktail, so that skewed my results. The second time was just blah, too, though, but a bit less. I got mine about a month ago from LcllBeauty and paid $99.77, including free shipping. It is the Ultra Light Professional Grade Tap Water Hair Steamer in Black. I am not giving up on it nor am I giving it a thumbs down as I know I will just have to work with it some more to get optimal results.

hey, i noticed youre in the uk. what steamer are u using?

Hi,

Whoops, sorry I forgot to say didn't I. Yup, I've got an Aphrodite professional steamer.

Got it from here http://www.beautyhairproducts.net/index.php/aphrodite/aphrodite-hair-proccessing-equipment/aphrodite-professional-steamer/p_53.html

It was on sale for £30.00 less at the time. Its a pretty penny to say the least but it was the best investment I ever made in my hair and I have no regrets cos intend to get my money's worth.

Paks do them too for the same price (I have to say the customer servive at Beauty Hair was excellent though). Paks also do a tabletop steamer for a 3rd of the price but it looks v similar to ones in the States that have bad reviews. Thats why I bit the bullet and bought the Aphrodite - some ladies say they last for years.

HTH

I can't imagine steaming for 1 hour. My steamer burns my scalp after 15 minutes. I wonder if my scalp is sensitive or if there is a problem with my steamer overheating.Has anyone else had this problem with their steamer?

Your story sounds just like mine. I thought it was no different from the heating cap at first. And I'm using the same steamer you have. I don't know if it takes a couple of times to work through your hair or if what I did different this time made a difference. It's funny though that with the other treatments I used moisturizing DC's and with the ORS it was just a much better DC. And I use ORS with a little honey all of the time so I could feel the difference that was better than normal.

Do you have your hair uncovered and do you stick your head all the way in there?

I hear these help open up the hair shaft to moisturize low porosity hair. I've been holding off but I DEF need to get one...

Hairsnob: I forgot to add honey and conditioning in all its various different forms is always better when I add honey to my cocktails. I am not covering my head and I am sticking my head all the way up in there, but the first time (which doesn't count) I pinned my hair loosely under there and the second time, I do not think the very ends of my hair were far enough under it to do them any good. Although I was not really uncomfortable per se, I do think that when the weather breaks here (many, many days this summer of 90 degrees and above) I will be able to experiment and enjoy it more.

I have used mine twice too and Im not raving over it, but I think it makes a difference over time, and as you try new steaming techniques and DC products you will notice a difference.

I'm having the same problem. I was getting discouraged thinking it was me. I can't put the hood down very far because it burns. It burns my scalp and I have to keep adjusting it and opening the vents. I do have a thin spot on my crown and I was going to use a clip to put some extra hair over that area.

My steamer also sounds an alarm after 30 mins. Sometimes it goes off before the 30 mins.

I ordered my new stand alone hair steamer from the link I posted above I ordered the tap water one that way I have a choice of filtered or reg water. I never used ftered in my old steam and it was fine. Can't wait to start steaming again HL/TL here I come.

I've steamed many times with fav products and with just plain water and my hair loved it now that's really heap DC ing there

Yes if you want to flat iron your hair, using the steamer as your DC is great because it infuses so much moisture into the strand and a good amount of moisture in the hair is the key to a good press imo.

It seems like moisture is the difference between frizzy flat-ironed hair and silky flat-ironed hair.
