Ladies of LHCF,
Have you ever just ran your fingers down the length of your hair, only to look down and see a couple of pieces of hair intertwined in your fingers? :perplexed
I experience this OFTEN and it's really beginning to make me wonder if that's SUPPOSED to happen or not......
I mean don't get me wrong...I understand that does shed daily and all but......when I do the strand test (checking to see if the white bulb is on the end, and pulling to check the strength of each strand) I get mixed results.....do you ladies think something is outta wack or what?:ohwell:

Gimme some feedback ladies :yep:

I'm natural now, but had a relaxer for 21 yrs...and that sounds like some breakage to me, especially if all of the hairs aren't shed hairs and you say it's happening often.

How often do you use heat on your hair?

Thanks for posting!

And to answer your question since I embarked on my HHJ (around the end of March i'd say) I have pretty much eliminated heat usage from my hair.....unless heat from DCing counts? That's the only kind of heat that's been incorporated into my hair since April........what did you do to counteract the shedding during ur relaxed stage?

Wow, that's awesome - I could never figure out how to get my hair super straight without heat, it was horrible! Heat from DC'ing doesn't count. Hmmm...is your hair dyed in the front or is that just a clip in?

When using your products are you making sure they're reaching all your strands evenly? By this I mean I've noticed and thought about recently that depending on how I apply my deep conditioner or protein treatment I can have some strands over-proteinated or not receiving enough moisture. Sure the majority will be healthy but the ones that lie beneath the surface of when my hair is slicked back wet those are the ones that when I perform a strand test can snap instantly while other shed strands have a healthy balance. Just my 2 cents.

@ the bolded--->>lol girl it surprised me too! it's only by the grace of GOD that it does dry straight at all! lol
&& about the color int the front...it's neither a clip in nor is it dye....I did that effect in photoshop girl lol.....i've NEVER had any color in my REAL hair before i'm to chicken to do it!...... :lachen::lachen:

LOL omg I love that!!

Then I'd def say moisture/protein balance. I understand that relaxed hair needs more protein, but don't overdo it...are you using heavy proteins often?

hmmmmm......there's something I haven't really thought about.
When it comes to me Moisturizing and Sealing, I use Hairlista's method in which you section off the hair into four parts....apply the leave-in, then seal it with oil, twist the section to get any left over product into the hair...and move on to the next section
This is also the same method I used when applying my DC....but I will admit...since i've embarked on this 10week stretch....i have been neglecting getting the product to my roots....just b/c I'm too lazy to really get into them the way I should :look:..............................

:grin:yea girl! so if there's a color you'd want to try out and not sure about how it'll look...jst hit me up and i'll give you a sneak peak of what it'll look like!

Thanks! I was suspecting the same thing, and nah I wouldnt say I use them too often, mainly when I do my 30min.-hour Deep condish on wash day.....other than that...i'm not TOO hard on the protein.
Are there any products that have an even amount of both moisture and protein that I could be using?

What leave-in/DCs are you using? If it is moisture/protein balance, maybe we can see which you need more of....

To answer your question about a product with moisture and protein, I use a great DC by ion (Sally's brand) called Effective Care Treatment. It's basically a light protein DC with a built in moisturizing DC. I love this stuff. You can get a sample pak to try it out for less than $2, but I buy the liter container with a pump on it because I like it so much.

Ok, so BAM here it is: (very simple regimen might I add)

Wash once a week
  • Shampoo-->Pantene ProV Relaxed and Natural
  • Deep Condition (30min.-1hr)--->Africa's Best Organic Deep Conditioner/Hot Six hair Oil
  • Rinse DC Out
  • Airdry
  • Section off into four parts, and apply Organic Root Stimulator Hair Lotion, and seal with Hot Six Oil
On Co-Wash Day
  • Co-Wash with VO5 cheapie anti-breakage conditioner
  • Airdry
  • Moisturize and Seal
Daily
  • Moisturize and Seal with Organic Root Stimulator Hair Lotion, Seal with Hot Six Oil
and for relaxers....I go to my hair dresser until I'm brave enough to self relax:look:

please let me in on what's missing or needs to be added to my reggie :)

Well I definitely see a lot of protein in your regimen....and FYI anything that says "strengthening" or "anti-breakage" is probably protein-laden.

Looks like a pretty good basic regimen. Have you tried a heavier protein, like Aphogee two-step or Emergencee? Since you are relaxed, you may need that, followed by a really moisturizing DC, once a month or so.

I just wanted to pop in and say that if you were engaging in unhealthy hair practices before embarking on this hair journey and you haven't had a major deep trim / cut as of yet.. the hairs that are breaking off may be unhealthy hair from before.

I'm just a newbie so what do I know but the same thing happens to me and I reluctantly started using lots of protein and my hair loves it! I am natural but have very very fine strands and I think it needs the strength that protein gives. Since you're relaxed, maybe you need more protein?

I agree. My hair didn't stop breaking immediately after I started my first HHJ. It took a couple of months.

This usually happens to me when my hair is lacking moisture. After one good DC the hair usually stops breaking. Well I did break down and use my flat iron twice in two weeks, thats when the breakage started. So I would suggest a good DC thats low on protein. I use the Yes to Carrots mud mask.

I pull out shed hairs EVERYTIME I run my fingers through my hair! Even after I get done detangling....with a denman! I've learned to accept the fact that my hair sheds 5000 strands a day! I shed so much, I don't even look through the hairs anymore so I wouldn't know if my hair is breaking or not unless they are really short.

I'm a newbie too, so take that for what it is lol, but maybe you shouldn't let your hair airdry before sealing it? I thought the purpose of sealing was to "seal" the moisture (i.e. water) in your hair strands....that can't happen if your hair is already dry, right?

Vets, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :-)

I think it's probably the ORS Hair Lotion I saw a few youtube vids with people saying it gave them breakage, and I think it's mainly for when you blow dry maybe switch that with a different moisturizer that you really like.

I'm not sure of the ingredients in all those products but I looked up the ORS lotion:

Ingredients
Aqua (Water) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Sorbitol , Petrolatum , Cyclopentasiloxane , Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil (Safflower) , Ricinus Communis Seed Oil (Castor) , Cetyl Esters , Cetearyl Alcohol , Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate , Stearic Acid , Olea Europaea Fruit Oil (Olive) , PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate , Dimethicone , Glyceryl Glycol , Triethanolamine , Carbomer , Disodium EDTA , BHT , Fragrance , Benzyl Alcohol , Benzyl Salicylate , Geraniol , Hexyl Cinnamal , Lilial , D-Limonene , Linalool , Lyral Methyl Ionone , CI 42090 (Blue #1) , CI 19140 (Yellow #5)

It has alcohol and a few cones, and it is mostly oil. Maybe look for a lotion that provides more moisture and has more emollients?

do you do protective styling? how often do you touch/play in your hair? low manipulation= less breakage. i know you are relaxed, but when i was transtioning, i noticed around 10 weeks post i had more breakage than normal, so you probably want to be super delicate and gentle esp while detangling

:yep: I sure have, I havent stuck with it consistently though.....I kinda alternate between the ORS replenshing Pak, Aphogee (jst the two min. reconstructor), and The Organic Root Stimulator DC......I also want to try some Megatek

:yep: Yes Ma'am....religiously

And about that touch/play....i'm kinda bad at that...i'll admit that I do put my hands in my hair a min. of 8times a day while im at work (soely to re-do my bun though!)

You know! I was just thinking about that...I am currently approaching my 9th week of my stretch.....and the breakage has definately increased...I will keep that in mind!

You know....i've heard pretty bad reviews ORS Hair lotion myself :perplexed
If you could recommend a better Leave-in for a 4a/B relaxed head...what would it be?

:yep: yup, this is also another tidbit that went through my head jst last night....i'm going to keep a close eye on the breakage if I dont see improvement over the next couple of months....then i'll probably start to panic :perplexed
