Do You Do Things That Are Not Hair Board Approved....

Oh yeah, I allow my stylist to use the dreaded marcel irons on the rare occasions that I fully straighten. :look:

-sulfate shampoo
-loves grease ocassionally
-sometimes add oil to hair before flat ironing
-stopped wearing protective styles (yea my hair is shorter but I feel prettier)
-enjoy products with mineral oil and lanolin
- relax and henna+indigo on same day
-protein treatments every week

I've learned a lot from hair boards and I've gone through quite a few phases along the way. I'm grateful for everything I've learned and all the people who share their experiences. However, at this point, I have pretty much left most things behind.

I don't deep condition or use leave-in conditioners. I don't do protein treatments. I don't "seal with oil". I buy and use cheap shampoos and conditioners, as they work just as well as anything else I've spent too much money on. I use everything diluted. I don't pay attention to ph balance or use the product of the moment. I don't do much of anything to my hair these days.

Like you op I use about 3 leave-ins, 4 if I include JBCO (which I use once my hair starts to dry).

I MUST have a brush for my edges.

I Love heavy oils and do not use them sparingly.

I Love sulfate shampoos (joico of course :)) and I lather more then once.

MY DC is a mixture of at least 3 products.

I do not DC with heat most of the time.

And I do not DC for more then 5 -10 minutes most of the time.

Me and cones are really good friends, we hang out just about every day!

I LOVE protein, and can't go a week without some protein.

I miss the Vitapointe I use to use at the beginning of my hair journey  I swear before I read up on mineral oil & petroleum/petrolatum, I really thought I had found the PERFECT product for my hair :ohwell: I threw it away a few months ago just because of what I read about it but NOT how it made my hair feel (which was amazing).....

Funny you ask this because I was just thinking about the disapproval I would get for securing my ponytail with a rubber band. Oh well! It works for me because I just pop it to take out my pony.

Cute thread...

  1. I shampoo with almost every wash. I have too much build up on my scalp not to.
  2. I love products with silicones.
  3. I love Skala.
  4. I do not intentionally protective style.
  5. My favorite sealant is a pomade a.k.a. hair grease.
  6. I love Skala.
  7. Most of the time, I'm too lazy to use a heat cap.
  8. I rather use Vatika Frosting on my skin than my hair.
  9. Last time I relaxed, I pulled the relaxer down to the ends.
  10. And did I mention, I love Skala.

:look:

I use a light protein once a week (but I thought that was okay)
I use a boar bristle brush for my edges
I will go a week without dc sometimes
When I dc, sometimes I use heat for 15 minutes and sometimes I don't use heat (except the heat from my own head)

OMG CICHELLE! You're back !

I love cones. When I'm buying conditioner, if there're NO cones in it, I put that ish down.

I love boar bristle brushes. I like to lay down my edges and hairline with them.

I use Aphogee 2 Minute for mad long and every week. Usually about 30 minutes to an hour, but I have gone overnight with it.

And when I'm stretching, I hit my roots with that flat iron once a week. Sometimes once every two weeks. But mostly once a week.

Sometimes, when I'm too lazy or too rushed in the morning to go to my bedroom and find the castor oil, I seal my ends with a little bit of Crisco from the kitchen. I am not ashamed.

We must be hair twins or somethin' because my regimen is almost the exact same, pound for pound :giggle:. Only thing is, I leave my conditioner on for 6+ hours and sometimes overnight- not because I need to, but because I'm lazy as hell . And Joico K-pak is my baby daddy :lick: even though I'm natural and I'm supposed to stick to "moisturizing" ingredients . I also find that my hair takes conditioner better when I use sulfate shampoos . My hair also loves protein (probably because it's fine)

If it works amazingly well...then use it. I've found the key to my hair's success is not to jump on every bandwagon that rolls around and KEEP IT SIMPLE. I stayed between APL and BSL for so long listening to every new gimmick that came along :nono:. Don't be like me. I'm just now catching up to where I'm SUPPOSED to be along my hair journey.

I am with you; I also:

- Shampoo with every wash (it's diluted, but it still lathers well)
- Don't moisturize daily, only once a week
- Don't engage in bedtime hair prep
- Don't wear a scarf (I do sleep on a satin pillow, but that's enough torture)
- Recently tossed the frequent co-washing out of my hair regimen

I grease my scalp with natures blessing hair grease and use always castor oil or indian hemp on my hair. My hair loves grease. I tried the no greasing scalp thing boy oh boy did i regret it. I shed so much hair during that 2 week trial. Thankfully I have thick hair. I use a soft bristle brush to "brush in" my gel and castor oil for my edges in the morning for my buns. My edges will not lay down without my brush.

:curtain:.............:sekret:

I love to wear microbraids and I *clutch pearls* wear them about 3 months. I never had breakage or disappearing edges.:look:

I use a shampoo with sodium laurel sulfate

I use a leave in that contains silicone

I don't moisturize and seal daily

I don't deep condition after every wash, sometimes I use an instant conditioner

I don't co- wash

I sometimes blow dry and flat iron

I wash every 5 - 10 days.

I comb and brush my hair

My hair is healthy, it's soft, I don't experience major breakage and I retain length.

I jump on bandwagons. I feel like everybody turns their nose up to this... I LOVE bandwagons. It would be the only way that I was able to find out about products that can work for me... Actually I think bandwagons are how most newbies find stuff that works for them. So LONG LIVE THE BANDWAGONS!

Also I brush my hair into a wet bun almost everyday and the bun... is always in the same place! I know. Shock and awe right? My hairline isn't receding and I don't get breakage... so... ya.

i never cover my hair up at night (unless i baggy w/ a shower cap). i always go right to sleep.

i really should... because i always sleep on one side, & the hair on that side always ends up flat, & i can't exactly comb it out!

i fix that by spritzing my hair with a moisturizer & fluffing it out with my fingers in the morning when i get up. & of course, picking out any bits of dust that get caught in there, lol

i love me some sulfate shampoos!!! I like my hair all types of sudsy!
the more bubbles the better.

and I probably wash my hair once every two weeks (when I am in braids) until the last couples weeks when it doesn't matter how often i wash (I hate for braids to get fuzzy). what else?

i pour carol's daughter hair elixer ALL over my hair and scalp.

that's basically it.

I use Blue magic coconut grease to seal the ends of my twists. Coconut oil, JBCO, etc was not heavy enough for my hair & blue magic really help to cut down on the ssk.

I also don't cut my ssk. I do try to be gently when pulling them out.

I'm not afraid to use grease for flatironing. I plan to test it out on my ends this winter.

I clarify with almost every wash.

girl so do i! i LOVE my suave clarifying shampoo, my hair never felt better after i use it!

I wear Celie braids in public and I don't give a **** ... now run and tell dat :lachen:
I DIED LAUGHING AT THIS!!! :lachen::lachen:

I break off my SSKs with my fingers. It is a really bad habit and I need to stop.

i do too, who has the energy to get off the couch and go find the scissors???

I didn't stay natural
im texlaxing in a few weeks, i got my whole life to be natural!!

I use heat frequently and on high temp/blowdry/flatiron
Sulfate poo's followed by Elucence poo
I use conditioners with cones
I brush my hair all the time

I don't moisturize my hair daily.
I never deep condition.
I don't follow the whole protein/moisture balance thing.
I don't seal with oil.
Conditioner is my only moisturizer and I leave regular conditioner in my hair.
I very rarely use a comb or brush. Fingers only.
I try to stay away from shampoos with sulfates but still don't mind using them, becuase all shampoos tend to dry out my hair regardless of ingredients.

- I detangle with my fingers
- I go days without combing my hair (even with my fingers)
- Whether relaxed or natural....the only way I will ever stop using HELTR condish and leave-in is when someone pries it out of my cold dead hands.
- My twists stick out and look like dysfunctional snausages. I am not ashamed.
- I usually let my hair shrink into a fro. I cowash, detangle with fingers, apply my leave-ins, detangle with fingers and let it go. It's happy enough not to give me SSKs.

But work for you anyway :look:? I came across a thread in which a youtube video was posted, in which this woman was slathering a whole bunch of products on her scalp. The application of the products to the scalp was excessive but the amount of products she used was not...or at least to me . It's nothing for me to mix 3 or 4 different conditioners together to DC my hair (more if I'm trying to use up products) and the minimal amount of leave-in I apply is 3. I posted the following for my wig reggie:

And I've come to the conclusion that my hair LOVES Vaseline. It even revives my pressed hair and leaves it very soft and manageable. When I pressed my hair last week, it was 2 inches longer than the pic posted in my siggy (I trimmed 1 inch). Apparently this regimen really works to help me retain length. Are there things that you do that are NOT LHCF approved but still help you retain length and keeps your hair healthy such a frequent heat or relaxer use, contraband products, etc?

I come here to learn about trends and sometimes I pick up tips that work for me but I don't have discussion boards that rule my life and/or way of doing things. So to make a long story short I suppose I do plenty w/my hair that is not LHCF approved. I don't use mineral oil or jelly but that's not a lhcf or internet thing - I think I gave those up about 13 or 14 years ago.
