Have you ever changed your permanent hairstyle because of the area you live in?

  • Yes, I have, but it didn't help any.

Has anyone ever done this? Like, because air pollution is terrible in the area you live, or the hard water is so awful you can't bear to deal with it kind of thing. I was thinking about relaxing my hair until we move to an area with better water, but does that even make sense?:wallbash: I'm not sure if it'd be easier to care for my hair in a relaxed state with hard water but I didn't notice water on hair before, just skin.

The most I've ever changed my hair to accommodate my environment was to get braids, or to bun everyday. I wouldn't alter the state of my hair "permanently" because of my environment, just because your relaxed hair might also hate the hard water, and then you'd be worse off than when you started.

Have you tried getting a water filter for the shower?

Already did the water filter, this water is nuts. And I have tree braids in right now...though I think they may see their end soon. Possibly allergic to the hair. :( I'm not really looking for a solution so to speak as the only one is the really expensive ones... I'm just curious as to whether or not anyone else has thought this way before. :)

When I first read this, I saw the title as "Permanently..yet temporarily...changing your hairstyle because of a religion?" LOL

Lol, nah. Though, technically, isn't that where a lot of the human hair for braiding and such comes from? Indian women shaving off their hair for a religious practice? Though they don't seem to know where it ends up...

Hi SS76 - we live in the same state and I can attest to what you're saying. The water quality here is horrible. I'm natural and assumed I had a texture of hair that just didn't respond well to anything and I would have learn to just accept it as it is. I find that the conditioner only method will not work for me here and I must clarify often for my hair to postively respond to conditioners and leave ins.

Well whenever I travel out of state, about once a month, my hair responds so much better to water in other regions. It's much softer and my natural curl pattern is Uh-mazing! I tried the shower filter and it didn't seem to make much of a difference for me. However, relaxing isn't the answer for me, I think my hair would end up in even worst shape.

But you are not alone. You'll come to an answer that works best for you.

I'm thinking combining hard water and you "re-learning" your relaxed hair may be a bad combo. Maybe a chelating shampoo that is designed to remove deposits may work?
