My sister-n-law insists that in most places stylist are no longer required to have a license.

I have been considering opening a braiding salon, 2 of my besties have African Braiding Salons.... but both are African (when i'm there....no one is speaking English). I cannot communicate well (language barrier...so declined his offer to open one in ATLANTA along with him):sad:. The little 2 yrs of Spanish/ 4 yrs of Latin i've taken serves me little purpose at the moment. I feel I need to be able to communicate better with the braiders to be apart of an African Braiding Shop (yippeee I'm learning french:nono::nono:).

QUESTION: considered bringing in a couple barbers & stylist

Off Hand....Does anyone know if Florida, Alabama, Georgia and nearby areas still require a license to operate? Sis-n-law's mom has been a stylist for 26yrs and claims no longer a license needed to OWN or OPERATE inside of a shop (cosmetologist & barbers license....not braiding):blush:

i dont think that's true. my friend just moved to georgia and she had to get a stylist license. i think alot of states dont require a license for braiding or natural hair.

:pullhair: Oooh Lawd I hope the stylists in TN still have to be licensed to style hair...yikes! Scary thought
Plz post if u know...

I know many states don't license braiders but I haven't heard of people not needing a license to barber or be a beautician. I don't know that I'd want someone without a training and a license working on my head if I were still doing the beauty shop thing.

When I was going to a salon I always saw a license displayed. Now of course that does not promise me they know what they are doing but nevertheless I saw one with their picture next to it or on it

:lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen: well ......

One of my friends mentioned (Miriam) has shops in Alabama, Tenn & New York. For at least the 10 + yrs i've known her.... only braiding

ALL OF A SUDDEN...SHE WASHES, CONDITIONS, DOES FUSIONS (I WATCHED HER LEARN BY VIDEO:nono::nono::nono::nono::nono:, MOSTLY WEAVES) EVERYTHING BUT CHEMICALS. I HAVE YET TO SEE HER TOUCH A CHEMICAL....BUT SHE DOESN'T APPROVE OF THEM SO ????

I KNOW FOR SURE they don't

ok...thanks

I guess i'll need to do some research later

I was told "THEY NO LONGER REQUIRE IT".....now :perplexed:perplexed I know I have many family members who are barbers that have not applied for anybody's licens:ohwell::ohwell::ohwell:

but I need to follow the rules, And choose to open in certain areas....
so ok

IT's funny you should post this. I know of a woman who has a shop in MD where she specializes in braiding, weaving, anything dealing with natural hair and does an excellent job. It's when she has to cut or use chemicals, that she will need a license to do. From what she told me, as long as she doesn't alter the texture of hair (chemicals, cutting, etc.), she can do hair without a license.

There is a debate over braiding because many believe that you don't need a license to do chemical/ heat free styles.

They could have natural hair licenses and not cosmetology licenses. With a natural hair license you can't use any type of chemicals but with cosmetology one of course you can do whatever.

I think as an owner of a salon the owner him/herself may not have to have one to operate but they must employ licensed people. I think.

hey sis!

that was my original question to my people....not about the workers...ABOUT WHETHER "I" AS THE OWNER NEEDED ONE

I KNOW WHEN I WAS REALLY YOUNG, I WAS TOLD THE MANAGER HAD TO HAVE ONE IF NOT THE OWNER

NOW I WAS TOLD THE WORKERS NO LONGER HAVE TO CARRY ONE:nono:
MAKES NO SENSE... GUESS I NEED TO SEE IT IN WRITING

NOT A NATURAL LICENSE.... MY FRIENDS DON'T HAVE ONE AT ALL (SIDE EYE)

Nah the workers still have to have licenses. Let there be an inspection and that place will be shut down. But I'm thinking as far as NYC goes. The licenses have to be up and on display. I know of places where there is an owner, a manager and the the stylists. You don't see the owner. They're just business people. They own the salon and just let a manager run it in their absence.

i'm checking into it..... getting conflicting info (as usual) from my peeps
my friend is an engineer & in grad school.... manages his own (WHERE DOES HE GET THE TIME)
i have some great ideas for a non-traditional salon

and a way for no drama.... i do not employ drama, but so many shots here
so many don't make it
gotta be creative

That is the craziest thing I ever heard. Yes they do need a license
If there weren't any license requirements then there would not be a need for a State Board and random inspections from the health department.

I have my license. There is a fee every two years for a renewal including 12 hour credits of safety and sanitation classes, ( due to a multitude of salons failing their inspections of sanitation and being filthy)

P.S
Now the PLACE ( Salon owner or whomever) may tell stylist they are not required to have their license to work in their business, but that is usually illegal because if the health dep. comes to inspect and they find out The owner has a person working there without a license....Thats a biiiig arse fine $$$$$ or are forced to shut down their business

I'm pretty sure they need a license. But this doesn't mean that people don't get around it ... but as thedonrosscollection said that is only because no one has caught up with them yet. Instead of going by the grapevine and hearsay, etc., etc. - why not use google to pull up your state code and find out what is actually required. I live in a state where a braiding license falls under barbering and cosmetology - different training but still the license is required.

There are many salons, nail shops, and massage clinic's that have unlicensed workers and/or booth renters.

If your service provider can barely speak english then how did they pass the state exam? The exam is ONLY given in english. In addition, you have to have a vaild state ID to take the exam, alot of service providers are not able to obtain one. :nono:

The license that is displayed does it belong to your service provider or do you just assume it does?:ohwell:

The amount of workers state board and the board of health has for surprised inspections is non existant in my state they employ 6 people:blush:

OP I would call state board for the rules and regulations in the state you desire to open a salon. Good luck.

i have my cosmetology operator and instructor license and i can guarantee that you do need a license to touch hair period. There is a shampoo license, a braiding license, operators license and ect....

This is reassuring to me. Each time I get my hair done it usually involves chemical or scissors so umma need for these folks to be licensed, qualified, and certified!
Now, if I were getting braids...thats another story. When I wore braids I would go to a friend's house or something and have it done by someone without a license. They always did a good job and I didn't worry...just as long as they didn't pull too hard at my scalp.

Those licenses are applicable in your state.
