Can Deep Conditioning more often replace daily moisturizing?

Daily moisturizers really are supposed to help keep the hair from drying out inbetween washes. Not everyone feels they have to use them. I don't really need them as long as I use a little oil or serum the day after I wash. I think it depends on the characteristics and condition of your hair. I will vary person to person. You won't know for sure what you like until you try.

thanks, GYMfreak.

i neverrrrrrrr use shampooo, i did the other day ONLY becuase i texlaxed. but i dont buy shampoo always co-wash 100% of time. soo im thinking i wont need to do it. but ill see how my hair acts. thanks

Bump...I was wondering the same thing. I haven't had to moisturize this week, but I had a nice dc last Saturday with Kenra MC. I'm wondering if I can forgo daily moisturizing if I find the right moisturizing dc to use 1x a week?

I shampoo/condition/ACV rinse my hair twice a week, and every other wash day a week involves a DC. I do not use any product once I finish washing my hair. I do baggy nightly. I'm happy with my hair and love that it has no products in it. My hair feels soft and moisturized to me. I am 4B. If I CW daily, I'd probably cut down on DCing too.

ETA: When I'm juicing, I don't even juice every day. Juicing on wash day suffices till the next wash day. I can't believe OP you juice daily. But that's probably why you have long hair and I don't. (I just can't imagine having layers of that stuff *shudders* on my hair or anywhere on me.)

My position is this:

1 - Depends on your DC. I used to DC with Kenra MC DAILY with heat (i was in school). Never ever needed to moisturize with a leave-in or lotion or creme - I would just bun w/ some type of oil, then repeat in the next day or so. No problems with this. I could see a challenge if you did this with a strengthening/protein condish.

I currently DC 1-2x a week with either Kenra MC or Aubrey Organics usually. Sometimes I mix other things in. I don't have to daily moisturize. I have no breakage, and no shedding, and very, very minimal split ends (of which I think a few splits almost impossible to avoid on a full head of millions of hairs)

2. - I have used Olive Oil ORS multiple times in a week, for long periods of time. It works well with no negative effects. However I (and my friend that used it frequently too) noticed that the results were not as fantastic after using it consistently many times in a week. BTW, we both did this with steam or no heat, sometimes heat caps.

3. - I will also add that co-washing daily can greatly reduce the need to moisturize. I still DC weekly. One is an intense treatment, the other helps with daily hydration in my opinion.

4. - Last, I know that you are a juicer. There is nothing like coating your tresses constantly with moisture to help hold on to length - be careful however NOT to over moisturize, if you DC with moisture, then juice all day, your strands can still stretch, become compromised, and break. This happened to me before. It is quickly reparable with a protein treatment and a few days off - and it took a LONG time before that happened -- but we can over moisturize our hair. Again, often very hard to do, but possible, as I did it. :)

Hope this helps provide some insight.

BTW - Olive Oil Replenishing Pak has Collagen in it. This is a strengthening component. I think thats why consistent performance over time impacted the results. Took a while to take effect, but it was too much strengthening going on my my hair.

ORS is a classic favorite of mine. :)

OMG it's you! I can't believe it's you! You are like a hair celeb here in Inglewood CA (Los Angeles). I go to hair events and natural hair meetings and everyone always have something nice to say about you Adora! I can't believe I finally found you on a thread, not knowing the exact screen name. I can't wait to go back and read what your comments are. One girl told me that you shut it down on the haters on jehri curl juice, lol. Now that's a thread I have to find and read.

I DC twice a week and I used that same DC (Lustrasilk) and I didn't feel the need to even moisturize daily and i usually don't. Same thing with redken smooth down line. I usually don't mind moisturizing at all. I think for you to be able to pull this off you would have to find your true staples in everything and have hair in good condition.

If a deep condition with a very good conditioner, I can go as long as four days without moisturizing. My hair stays soft and doesn't need any more product.

I don't do that now because I don't have time to wash my hair twice a week. I wash once a week and moiosturize every other day. I'm natural BTW.

HTH

Interesting. Some of you find that if you DC often you can cut out moisturizing daily and I find if I cowash daily I can cut out DCing. I seriously HATE sitting for more than 5 minutes with something on my head so I could never really bring myself to DC. I just find cowashing easier for my lifestyle.

I only use an actual leave-in 1x per week for rollersetting. I rely a lot on deep conditioning 1-2x per week for moisture. Other than that I maintain my styles with Seyani hair butter (any oil, butter, serum) in between washes. No daily moisturizing for me ever. :yep:

Hmmmmmm........... ...

I guess it would depend on your hair.

Even if I was DCing every few days, I'd still moisturize my ends every other day. I just wouldn't want to risk them getting dry...

R U suggesting that you want to give up Jheri Juicin'? I'mma tell:grin:

Very interesting. My hair is heavy laden with product. I juice day and night. Now that its warmer outside I will up my co-washes but I'd feel a little naked without moisturizing. Let me add that I've only been natural (type 4) for about a year so I'm still learning things about my hair. It usually feels dry and harsh after my regi unless I juice or use my Miss Jessies curly buttercreme to set my flat twists. Of course my hair is super coated too (probably not a good thing).

It only takes a few seconds to apply a little moisturizer. It's better to be safe, than sorry!

I don't wanna see y'all on here talkin' about dry ends.

My hair has always been THIRSTY relaxed and natural. I couldn't get away with not moisturizing. It should also be noted that I don't DC with heat. But I will occasionally throw a hot/warm wet washcloth in under my shower cap with my DC.

I was going to make a multiple choice poll not too long ago asking if people use their conditoner more, or moisturizer, and ask if some people dont use a moisturizer, and ask how many times a week peolple use a conditoner or moisturizer. Or just ask which one people think is more important.

Because some of the people who co-wash dont use moisturizers.

I look at both of them like water treatments for the hair, but I do think conditoners are more important if I had to choose one to use.

For me, conditoners are very beneficial, but I havent found one yet that leaves my hair moisturized enough after I rinse it out, or my hair is very dry. If I found one, then I would co-wash daily, or deepcondition probally overnight about 3 times a week or more and thats it, then just keep my hair oiled.

But like someone else said, just make sure your ends are good if you give it a try.

I am soooooooooooooooooo glad this topic came up. Because my hair has a very hard time holding moisture. I usually wash my hair (shampoo and conditioner) every two weeks and maybe deep condition once a month. I'm a natural 4a/4b and I wear my twists (just started getting into longhairdontcare method since im not good with cornrows)

If I deep conditioning often.. like 2 or 3 times a week..will it help build up the moisture in my hair.? (Like Deep Conditioning 3 times straight.. or alternate. Friday, Sunday and Tuesday)

Cause Im begining to think... deep conditioning once amonth or even every week is not enough for my hair.

Also how do you know as a natural with 4a/b your hair is moisturized.

Have you tried Porosity Control of any kind?

Hey then you should check out the Skala thread. This stuff is moisture in a bottle and no cones to build up or add to your dryness problems. I thought I just couldn't cowash to save my life but I could never find a con that worked for me. Now I do it daily with Skala only. Skala may work for you.

I cowash my hair at least 3x a week so I don't really have to because I seal with Oil...But I always have to moisturize my hair with water every morning no matter what...but I do wash n go's so maybe that is different from what you are asking

For me it's about more often and with better quality products. I'm noticing 3 yrs into my HHJ that I don't need to moisturize (unless I choose to) because my hair is increasingly better condition.

I co-wash 1-2X per week and depending on the style of my hair I wash with shampoo bi weekly. I DC every 3-4 days. I seal my hair with grease (loving DAX or Softee lately)or oil...whatever is handy.

Well I think it depends on your hair. Everyone's hair is different, has different needs, likes, dislikes, etc.

For me, I do not moisturize or oil my hair. Moisturizing my hair with a product makes little pieces of my ends break off. :perplexed My alternative for that is deep conditioning every week after every wash with a moisture or protein based conditioner. I then blow dry after with no product on my freshly washed hair. The result? My hair is in the BEST condition it's ever been. :yep:
I let the natural sebum from my scalp lubricate my hair to protect it. Sometimes if I feel like it I add EVOO to my conditioner but I get the same result. I still do it though because it has been proven that olive oil along with coconut oil and avocado oil can penetrate the hair strand. Plus, since it's oil and won't wash away when I rinse the conditioner out, it'll probably do some good. :drunk:
Anyway, all this is great because it's equates to me having less steps in my regimen which is less time-consuming. Thank goodness I stumbled upon doing this completely by accident. :spinning:

So to finally answer your question, for me, deep conditioning definitely can replace daily moisturizing. I do NOT think deep conditioning can replace daily moisturizing in everyone's case. You might just have to try it and see but if at anytime your hair does not like the new change, discontinue and resume to your old regimen.
