Conditioner Hoarding... Please Tell Me I'm Not Alone!!

OMG, the bolded part is the story of my life...and we are hometown homies too:grin: Houston is soooo big, but honey I will go to every Ross/TJ Maxx/Marshalls from Katy to the Woodlands to get clothes, hair stuff, exercise equip lol, whatever phase Im in as well, and let me not talk about calling around for the limited edition stuff at MAC, I think if you already have a shopping problem, you are seriously at risk for pj'ism...it is what is though lol...everybody has a vice!

That is so funny because I called all the big lots last year for a gazebo and only one location had it and it was in Katy. I drove to katy and it was the wrong one. :wallbash:. I was so mad. Then I was about to drive to katy to get deer sausage and I had to stop myself.

I dont buy in multiples. But if I walk into a store it takes A LOT of willpower to walk out without one conditioner :look:

So far, I've been really successful. I have like 4 or 5 conditioners that I love. 2 are nearly finished so hopefully, I can repurchase when I'm down to 1 or 2 :yep:

I think it takes time. I've learnt what ingredients I love and work for my hair and work with that. If i'm tempted to buy something, I read the label, have a think, then probably put it back down. A lot of conditioners have the same ingredients and moisturising properties, so I dont think I'm completely losing out. The only conditioner I'm looking forward to trying is the Aubrey organics white camellia.

Ooo and the Wen, then I'll be good. (i hope) lol

It is the same company based from the same location in ny, and it has the same ingredients as Dr. miracle. It is sold for less and is sold only at Family dollar. The boxes are almost identical. It had helped me grow in my edges from a bad relaxer. So when I saw it on clearanced I literaly cleaned the shelf at three locations.

Oh i never knew that. :yep: Yeah the boxes look so alike lol.

I used to overbuy on my favorites too. Key term that you used originally there, hoarding.

I had 10 bottles of the SAME conditioner. Justified it because of price and I liked it. So I would keep re-buying in all sizes, especially as they were deals. This was different than the need to try a new product. This product WORKED. And I wanted ALL of it.

The truth of the matter is - I eventually realized that I would NEVER get through all of it before it expired. And what happens when they can't make it anymore? No matter how much I buy, it wont last forever. And if it did last forever, it would be expired by the time I got to the last bottle. And if that bottle WAS NOT expired, it was probably filled with horrible chemicals that I didn't need to expose my hair to.

So, you asked, what can be done?

For me, first, I came to the realization that there is more than 1 good product that works for my hair. So no need to hoard on it. Second, I realized its not a "steal" if you get buy 1 get 1 free, and buy 2. You lose the deal. Your utility and value goes down as you increase the quantity and the time before you use all of it while its good.

Lastly, I began to give things away. This was the HARDEST part. If I recommended it to my mom - I gave her a bottle. this was hard. It started with small samples, but gradually, I gave things away. Then I sold things on eBay that were still in good condition, so others could share and use it too. You feel better, and the guilt of hoarding conditioners gradually lifts.

Lastly, I limited myself from buying more than 1 extra of ANYTHING at a time. There is NO NEED for 10 conditioners! Or 8! You are either over using the product just to get through it (which is also wasteful) or letting it sit and rot in a cabinet somewhere. So use 1, maybe 2 effectively. Then re-stock.

This saves you money. It reaffirms that you are in control of the situation, and when you stop justifying why its OK to do it, you will stop overbuying.

PS: If any dire circumstance happened where you would need all 10 of those conditioners because the world was coming to an end, trust me, using the conditioners would be the LAST of your worries. Its a low risk to take.

When all else fails - watch hoarders. This will really make you give things up. :)

OMG...I just got a gift card, and my first thought was hair products (Lord, forgive me!), but in my defense I have been unemployed for months and therefore keeping my PJ-ism at bay out of necessity; i.e. feeding the family is way more important than how fly my hair looks. I'm about to start a new thread 'cause I don't want to jack this one.

Lovlie, I really enjoyed reading your post. Though I started this thread with a very light heart, and don't seriously think I've developed a problem (yet) I can really appreciate your well founded advice.

I've never purchased so many bottles of conditioner that I feared I wouldn't use them before their expiration date and right now, I only have about twelve bottles or so. Still, I would probably do well to scale it back a little.

I appreciate everyone's comments and really enjoyed reading all of your stories! Feel free to keep 'em coming!

I buy a lot if stuff is on a good sale, so I have two medicine cabinets filled with hair and facial products, hair and body products on the ledge between my shower and bath and in my laundry closet, I have my overflow - my elasta qp dpr11 & deep conditioner soy oyl, gallon size of salon care cherry conditioner, motions giant tubs of silk protein conditioner & deep penetrating treatment to name a few.

 Deer sausage in katy!!! where? i luv deer sausage!!!:lick: Spill the beans!

Back to the topic...i just wanted to see if the Marshalls in Humble had Carol's Daughter and they didnt but I found an organic conditioner by a company called MOP...those $3.99 organic conditioners get the best of me:look:

Lovie, that was just the pep talk I needed....I need that along with a real cheap husband that gives me the side eye and ask me if I need everything I pick up in the store...I loved my ex-boos that were like that lol!

I am in tears. This is like an intervention. First My husband and then you! Telling me to give things away. But I do give away what I have multiples of. You are right about trying to use a product up before it expires. I do the same thing with food in my freezer. So yes my name is shonda and I am a shopaholic and a baby hoarder. I confess.

Thanks for that because I was just about to go and buy another Vo5 before the sale is over:nono:. But you stopped me. So thanks. I have will power when I look at the price and the ingredients. But when its cheap and the ingredients are good, then I just break down. hahahahaha

I have the 3 gallons of Salon care Honey almond conditioner. It went on sale last month at Sallys, How is the Cherry conditioner working for you?

 You were about to buy MOAR conditioner??!! :spank:

You definitely don't need more conditioner!

On another note, if you are indeed looking to give some away, I'd be more than happy to take a few bottles off your hands! I'll pay for the shipping and everything!!:yep:

I used to be a hoarder but I have gotten much better (at my worst, I had about 120 conditioners, now I'm down to about 25). I still have a bunch of of it, but thanks to the deep conditioning and co washing challenges, I'm getting rid of them. And I have drastically cut back on the purchasing end also. So there is hope at the bottom of the bottles ladies (if you want it).

Girl, you aint alone. I work for the housing office at my base and I have so many conditioners (I have a excel spreadsheet to keep track) that my boss has given me a set of keys to a vacant unit across the street from my home to hide my conditioners so when DH comes home this Thurs. from Iraq he wont be mad. :perplexed:look::ohwell::lachen:

Ummmmm yeah its that bad!

Conditioner Hoarding:

A Confession for this Thread Only. So....sssshhhhh:look:

A Fellow Poster (in another thread) had a Gallon of Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment that she wanted to 'get rid of' cause she didn't like it particularly for her hair.

Deep Teatments are My Personal Weakness.

So she put out a mandate: Send her an empty Jar and she'll Fill it up with Jessicurl and return it to you.:lick:

I had purchased 2 Jars of Jessicurl that I hadn't even opened or never used. So what did I do: Sent Her and Empty Jar and She Filled it Up with WDT.:perplexed

Is that sick or what??????:spinning:

Sshhh.....:look:

Hoarding....

*will use jessicurl wdt this week*

Side eye...Too funny, and I know ALL about that! I was victim of a few death stares at one point in my marriage!

Glad that exposing my own challenges and how I began to overcome them could help others! You don't quite realize how bad it is until you look back and see what you walked out of. :) Peace.

GOOD FOR YOU! Be strong!

Each step away, each time you turn away from overbuying, you give yourself increased power and control. :yep:

Oh dear, IDT....
Sigh.

Lawd, let me put my story in here too! So ya'll know they reformulated/packaged Pantene. My hair LOVES beautiful lengths and they discontinued it!They didn't even come up with a replacement! Imagine my shock, so I spent yesterday morning driving around my town hunting down stores with leftover stock. Why do I have 20 bottles of conditioner? LMAO!

Thank you ladies for responding! There is something I'd like to clarify though...

Umm... it's not that I'm still in the experimental stage, at least not in my co-washing conditioners. Haven't found my perfect DC yet, but that's another story.

Anyway, it's not that I'm trying different kinds of conditioners all the time. I mainly use Suave and Vo5. The problem is that I can't stop buying them, even when I have several bottles already!! I just keep thinking that I need to stock up, just in case I should run into a situation where I can't buy conditioner for a while, I'll already have some.

I realize that this notion is largely ridiculous because Vo5 only costs $0.79 per bottle, yet I can't seem to stop myself from buying more! I think part of the problem is BECAUSE they are so cheap!

:nervous2: I'm running out of places to hide my stuff!!

:lachen:

Maybe you think one day you're going to come in to buy some $0.79 Vo5 and they've increased the price. I mean it could happen. LOL

I don't consider it hoarding since I don't hide it from anyone. Hubby supports me in my Skala search, only slightly shakes his head when I come in with yet another bottle of
Vo5. He helped bring in my clear container that fits under our bed to hold the additional products that won't fit in the other 2 clear containers and under the sink.

Besides I don't have THAT much. *scratches arm*

lol!!! I luv your song! But Im so mad at you stashing those Bed heads in the rug!!! I am addicted to going to Marshalls, Ross, and TJ Maxx on the hunt for new conditioners. I just go to see what they have and I always walk out with a new con...we need a use up ur condish challenge for the next 6 months of the year...cant buy anymore until the 40 plus bottles we have are gone! Im trying not to buy anymore but its hard!

I was mad at myself at the "rug stash" but they were the last 2 in the store....couldn't take any chances...lol. I'm planning to be good this weekend...no Ross, Marshalls or TJ Maxx. A new Marshall's opens near me today...I'll go over there TODAY so that my visit won't conflict with my no conditioner restriction I have placed on myself for this weekend. lol!!!

Yeah see... THIS... This is not normal. :nono:

Now whether or not I would have done the same, I wonder if she still has some conditioner left. I got some containers I could send, is inconsequential! You mean that you already had some of the same brand of conditioner, hadn't even tried it yet, and you STILL sent a container off to get some of hers??!!:rolleyes::rolleyes::lachen::lachen:

So, I used my gift card today...for groceries! I did buy one, and I stress one, bottle of Nourish Spa conditioner at Trader Joe's, but the rest of my spending was for household items and food.
