Fine haired ladies: Spray or Serum heat protectants?

I kinda prefer serum/cream heat protectants, but I have used spray protectants before, so depending on how good the product is itself, it could go either way.

If you use a spray you're better off using it before you blow dry. Trying to use it with a flat iron will result in steam and killing your strands. I good serum will really protect it and help keep the hair from reverting.

Personally I use a cream (Rusk str8) and serum (Fantasia IC pink bottle) before blow drying and then a little bit of the serum in each section I flat iron. That usually keeps it from reverting and my hair doesn't feel dry or damaged. It ALWAYS goes back to it's natural texture when I get it wet. HTH!

I have fine hair..and I find serums work best on my hair. I love Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum...or the Sally's GVP version. Both are great! My hair is not weighed down at all. I also use it seal.

I had a bad experience w/spray protectant (Motions) that left me with broken hair. Now I'm traumatized :nono: Plus I find that spray protectants make it hard for me to comb my hair. I don't know why. I just need the slip of a serum (applied sparingly).
I like Giovanni's serum and the famous Sabino. Also I like Elucence Silk Hydrating Elixir, which is super light and a good value for the amount you get in the bottle :yep:

I'm a huge fan of Giovanni and I want to try their serum, but I was unaware it could be used as a heat protectant. Or maybe I'm confused about something that is clear to everyone else. :ohwell: I saw they have a cream designed for blowdrying with heat protectant, but I'm skeptical about its effectiveness for flat ironing.

As for my heat protectant of choice, it's Beyond the Zone Turn Up the Heat. It works well, but I don't really care for the smell.

TOTALLY OT: I love your siggy & I agree. I love Raheem Devaughan.

At the bold, I found using spray protectant with a flat-iron with vents for wet-to-dry flat ironing did not damage my hair at all. I did go over my hair one with the flat iron one more time with a serum applied to seal and keep it from reverting. So I personally prefer to use both and I don't blow dry but just flat-iron.

There was no burned smell and my hair didn't revert while I wore it straight. It only reverted when I washed it, at which time it reverted completely.

hmm, I have such a hard time achieving bounce, I'm wondering about this paul mitchell super skinny serum

no super skinny can be heavy, it may not give good shine and you may find that you have to add more - heavy and takes away bounce.

Try Redken Velvet Gelatin 07 for blow outs
Redken 12 Align Straightening Lotion for blow outs
Redken 02 Satinwear Heat Styler for blow outs/flatiron
Redken Iron Silk 07 for flat ironing. - this is a spray.

generally, any of these would be good to layer as well. You can't use alot of any product or you will loose movement. The exception to this is the Iron Silk - you spray this on each section you flatiron.

also for fine hair, but I haven't picked this up yet to try

Redken Sheer Straight 06 - it is a gel and can be used for blows and flatiron

jazaks girl, I'll look into those, I've never heard of any of them. I'll have to see if beauty 35 down in manhattan has any of them. I don't really blow dry or flat iron basically because I can't really do it correctly. I just rollerset and halfheartedly silk wrap. does flatironing really give a lot of bounce?
lacio lacio has been my best bet so far...I'll also try rollersetting using mostly water....
I almost feel like my hair needs some weight, you know? it's super dense in there

I have very fine hair and I use Fantasia IC Hair Polisher Heat Protector Straightening Spray and it doesn't feel heavy or greasy.

I like serums a lot more. Lately I've been using Turn up the Heat and it yields great results every time. I love the fruity/candy smell, too. :p

I use Nioxin Thermal Bliss and I love it. I have been using heat consistently for the last almost 6 months and I have no visible heat damage. I say no visible damage because hey maybe it is damaged without me knowing or something. I like for my hair to be light and airy, not oily when I flat iron.

Oh you are looking for a rollersetting lotion? Well Lacio Lacio is fine if its working for you, no need to change it. The key for bounce and lightness is to use as little product as possible, and it should be light. LL has a good consistency for that.

And since your hair is dense, if you do decide to use a different product, The straightening lotion or gels would be good too. Let me know how you like it if you try.

Thanks for the headsup with the Redken Heat Styling Line. I will be purchasing the whole line.

Ok so I went to a beauty supply today and I ended up getting the redken satinwear 02 thermal blowdry lotion because out of the recommendations you gave me, the guy at the store said that was the most lightweight... would it be dumb to set with this? Or should I use it after I take the rollers out before I saran wrap?
As for lacio lacio, I like it ok. I'm not in love, because imo it gives virtually no slip. It is lighter than anything else I've used though and I get an ok amount of movement from it. I'm looking for lighter I guess?
how much do you think I should be using?

Thank you OP. I am looking for a heat protectant for my first time using a flat-iron. This will also be the first time I've used heat in 6 months. I'm scared! But I'm getting bored of being curly 24/7. lol.

Last time I blowdried and used Keracare Silken Seal. I was afraid then too. LOL. My former stylist said that it was the only one that would work for my fine but dense hair. But I hated it. Sticky and weighed down too much.

I live in the UK, so I planned to try Mizani next. But with these reviews I might try Redkin instead.

If you have a hooded dryer - use the lotion for rollersetting and drying. I would not use more for the silk wrap.

With your hair type/texture, please please let me know how the lotion works. I am really loving how this line smoothes and gives great shine to textured hair.

ya i have a dryer, so I'll do that.
I'm also due for a wash and set today (even if I wasn't, I would have probably washed anyway, I'm like a baby when I buy something new :lachen: )
So I'll be trying it out tonight, I'll try to use light products for my wash too (maybe that's my problem?), I'll use mizani moisturefuse for DC that seems kind of light, maybe my prep isn't good either
I'll let you know how that goes, have you used the 02 satinwear before?

I rarely DC after a shampoo anymore.....gasp. I hot oil or DC on dry hair, shampoo, use leave-in, then whatever styling product.

No, haven't used it yet. Ive tried a few others and loved them so I'm adding the rest.

I am a fan of Sabino and Chi Silk Infusion to flat iron, but when I get a Dominican blowout they use Silk Elements heat protectant spray. I also recently got some Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum to use when I flat iron; hopefully that will work out.

Every time I use a spray with a flat iron, it's like the heat travels up my hair and burns my scalp. Chi Iron Guard was the WORST!!!

^^^ Thanks, Sharifeh!! :)

I have both fine textured strands and low-density, so no matter what, a thread about either will apply to me.

Serums I find weigh my hair down and eventually my hair becomes limp.

I haven't really experimented alot with sprays but I prefer them over serums.

I am going to try the roller-saran wrap method and see if I can get great results that way I won't have to flat iron my hair and worry about using a heat protectant.

I love Redken Heat Glide serum. It gives excellent shine without dryness. I also have Redken Real Control Thermal Resist, Redken Iron Silk, and Redken Hot Sets. I'd say of the sprays the iron silk is the best.
